Last Minute On Earth by Wheffle

This is a game about extending the last minute on Earth as long as you can. The world may be ending, you'll be damned if you can't draw it out.

I actually started this entry around noon on Sunday. It was fun throwing something together in such a short amount of time and seeing what I could get done.

Instructions

WASD or Arrow Keys to move.

Find the time portal in your house within the minute to revert time back to one minute before nuclear annihilation.

Tips

For the min-max gamers: each time you pass through a portal you will get the full 1 minute added to your score whether or not you spent the whole minute looking for the portal. In other words, there's no reason to wait around in each level to inflate your score. (As a result, the "minutes survived" at the end of the game will be way longer than how long you actually spent in the game. Time travel and stuff, you know.)

My highest score was 15 minutes + some change while I was testing. Post your high scores in the comments ;)

This was a lot of fun and very intuitive. Neat little concept. I managed to live for 13.5 minutes.

A super simple and fun game idea. I overall liked the music and the visuals. Well done.

Nice work, light effect was super cool and it was fun to try and keep the enemies outside the range so they wouldn't shoot. I think their bullets could have been a little fast so it wasn't so easy to dodge them. But other than that this was very impressive for a jam game. Cheers, and thanks for sharing with us. :)

Brilliant! Game feel was great, field of view was perfect, and I loved dodging the cops and their bullets. Well done.

Gotta say for only starting on Sunday at noon this is pretty well put together! As a concept it is cool. My feedback for it is only that the ideal strategy of waiting around until the last second just isn't really my idea of fun. Perhaps if there were other goals to do in the apartment it would work a little better. Just a thought!

@wren-erickson You actually get the full minute added on to your score when you go through a portal whether you used the whole minute or not. I totally agree that waiting around to inflate your score would be 100% super lame and realized that during play testing! Probably not the best solution, and it was not communicated to the player at all

Haha, I waited around a lot xD Even then I did think my score was a little high.

This was fun! I think the progression was great here, I particularly liked that the level stayed the same for the first few so that things like the time cops could be introduced in a familiar space before starting to vary things. The dodging was fun but tuned well so it felt tense but very doable. I do agree that communicating the way scoring works in game could have helped but since I read it here first, I just went straight through each time and didn't un-fun myself. Great game!

I love the invincibility frames after taking the time portal, those subtle things are so nice. Very entertaining game!

Really nice design and progression. The game feels a bit simplistic, but that makes sense for a compo entry. The different house layouts were fun. My biggest complaint was that the cops were a little dumb, trying to shoot me through walls, for instance. Great job overall.

Fun game! I like the light system, looks good, and is well implemented as an interesting gameplay mechanic, both triggering enemies and revealing your goal.

Good work!

Simple but it absolutely kept my attention long enough to try a few times! Very good job for a solo dev! Keep up the good work! Maybe if there was more added to this game maybe more variety in things to find or to give your MC some kind of defense when the harder levels start

There is room for a bit of polish and perhaps some enemy variation or other game mechanics (such as locked doors or traps). Small things like preventing the enemies from firing for a second when you exit a portal or enemies not firing when there is a wall between you are pretty simple to implement and would make a world of difference.

The story was great and I loved the humour. Especially how it blames a different country or group for the end of the world every time. Nice sound effects and level layout.

All in all, it is a great entry. Well done!

That was a lot of fun! Why is the time portal always in the last room I look? O.o

Before reading someone else's comments, I didn't realize the nationality was chosen at random, was slightly offended that it happened to blame mine (let's go with... Robots?) on the first page load -_-. But, after that it was slightly more amusing ^_^.

It was very intense right after jumping through a portal and bullets were flying at my face, I quite liked that, but I would have liked just a moment to find myself before getting shot at. The sound and rhythm of combat was kind of nice, let me time going around corns knowing they when they show and when they were next going to shoot.

Nice job for such a short time!

My highest score was 11.20 after a few tries!.

Although the enemies fire the moment you appear in another room they never hit me. I don't know if there is an invencibility period but i will add one to avoid cheap deaths.

I only missed some background music, but I understand the limited time. Great game anyway!

Thanks for everyone's feedback so far! Really grateful you guys took the time!

@jimbly @hmightypirate There actually is a short period of invincibility (because I was tired of getting spawn killed while play testing  ) but I was crunching the game out in such a short period of time I failed to communicate a few mechanics to the player, including that one. Seems like you guys might have caught on though!

@wheffle Oh, heh, that's smart! Maybe it was better not to tell us, as almost every level I was like "Hah! I'm awesome that I managed to avoid all of those bullets! (though, it really seems like one of those was gonna hit me...)"

Nice and simple, maybe lacks a bit of variaton after the first few levels. Sound effects were nice. I was confused why the police wants to kill me in the last minute of the world.:(

Cool idea! I lived for 10.07 minutes. My only suggestions would be to delay enemies shooting at the start of the level. They shoot immediately when the level starts, there is no time to react at all, so its player is unlucky it can die immediately, without player's fault. Anyway, it was fun to try it out.

Thanks everyone for play testing and rating! I actually had a bout in the hospital in the middle of the play testing period, but I somehow made it to 20 ratings anyway because you guys were awesome.
