A duck on ice by jk5000

[raw]
made by jk5000 for Ludum Dare 50 (COMPO)

WARNIG this game is not made for kids to play.

The game is about a happy toy duck that is living on a ice flak, but then something really bad happens.

Sound is an important part of the game. I will recommend you to using headphones.

I'm super curious what the 18+ aspect of this game is. I played it through but I didn't notice anything. Was there something in the audio I missed? Also I love the duck's little flappy feet!

In the audio you hear a story that is not really kids friendly. You don't have to 18+ for story, but I just don't want kids to play the game.

This was really well done. I liked how the narration reminded me of Stanley Parable where the voice reacts to you. Very fun!

Dang that is a sad story. We are all the toy duck too. :sob:

I liked this a lot, very funny and enjoyable.

Nice submission. Based on the first voice line it sounds like we were so close to having a turtle island instead of a duck island

I was a little worried with all the warnings that this game was going to try to scare me, but I was pleasantly surprised! The voiceover is really well done

Don't know what happened but my first time through I didn't hear any audio so I had to play it again. It definitely adds to the experience!

That poor little duck! You know, I like ducks and I really felt bad for it. Why did it end? Why was the duck stuck on the small sheet of ice? Where was it going? Why couldn't it fly away? So many questions which will haunt me 'till the end of time...

Liked the story and the idea. Fits the them perfectly. GJ!

Cool idea for a game. This hit the theme nail on the head. Loved the narration. That duck had a sad story indeed. Nice work!

Voiceover was pretty funny for some reason, even though the words themselves were not funny... I liked it, I would suggest making the fans push the bombs farther and generally be more powerful.

I love the whacky-ness. Bombs? Ducks? Fans on its head? Awesome! The narration was cool too :)

I was *very* excited to learn there were voice lines for all the deaths at every point. This feature single-handedly makes this one of the greatest games ever made, even if the story is very, very sad.

Jeje but suddenly he remember that he has a fan in his head XD

Interesting game a bit short but I think that this is good because this means wanted to know more about our little ducky.

Good job :)

Awsome! I like the lovely and funny feet of this duck with a fan on his head. Emmm i really want to help him so i wonder if there is a way to delay the melting over 90 seconds?

This was, sad, very, very sad, indeed. The narration was good, so was the music. I LOVE the tiny floppy feet. Well played, well done.

The voice over and duck design were great! Also liked that you threw in that fan mechanic, very cool. Not a game id replay but it was focused and to-the-point the first time around and I enjoyed every moment of it!

Heloo! Congrats on your entry, thought I'd leave some unfiltered feedback for you so you can improve as much as you can from this experience!

I understand this was a jam game, so some of the things I say you might have thought of implementing but just ran out of time.

**Feedback:**

---

🎨 Graphics 🎨
- The 3D models were nice, so were the effects. I liked the art :)
- The camera felt awkward, didn't have a good perspective of how close the duck was to the edge at the back.
- The Iceberg (?) texture is kind of blurry, but that's not too big of a deal.
- When moving backwards the little flaps on the wheals play their animation backwards, which would work, but because of the way they curl before going under the wheal it looks kind of weird.

🎮 Gameplay 🎮
- There was a lot of downtime where I was just sitting around, not doing anything, even with the story this became a little boring.
- Needing to restart the whole story on death was also annoying, I think implementing checkpoints so you just respawn at the start of the last voice line would have been good :)

📜 Story 📜
- Having a story element made this game a LOT better xD Good job for implementing that.
- Great job with the voice lines as well

Hope this was helpful!

The toy duck is SUPER cool, I really liked her flippers on wheels. It would be great if the bombs had a shadow, because sometimes it is not clear it's where the bomb is. But it's still good job!

Real impressive production value for a Compo entry! I was legitimately surprised when I found out that the voice narrates your actions Stanley Parable style! I guess the only nitpick that I have is being able to see the ends of the water plane; though I'm not sure if you could do anything about that.

There also may not be much in gameplay here, but this cleary isn't going for that. It's just an amusing little story that ties with the theme. It's not anything that would necessitate an 18+ category, perhaps 13+ would make more sense.

But yeah, you've done a lovely job on this one.

Really cool concept. I like how the narration is affected by what's happening in the game -- I exploded the duck on purpose so I could hear how that narration was interjected into the story. I also adore the animation of the duck's feet rotating around the wheels.

Reminds me of your game from LD46, you have a knack for making games more interesting with your voice over! Unfortunately this game seemed to lag quite a bit on my computer but I managed to make it to the end anyways :) the fan added a lot to the gameplay and was fun to use! Good job on this!

It was really interesting to see that many of you see it as being a funny game and others as an sad game.

I have made and uploaded a slightly updated version of the game. It's still short, but I have tried to improve the story a bit, and giving a bit better music. I have also made a few changes to the visuals and the gameplay.

I hope to see you all in another Ludum Dare or perhaps in a another game jam.
