Garbage Collector Simulator by wdebowicz

made by wdebowicz for Ludum Dare 50 (EXTRA)

The intention of the "game" is to simulate process of Garbage Collection (based on Java). Your goal is to keep the program running as long as possible by clearing the memory from unused objects. Below I attached a bit of theory about how the GC works. gc-simulator-gameplay.gif

Theory:

Automatic garbage collection is the process of looking at heap memory, identifying which objects are in use and which are not, and deleting the unused objects. An in use object, or a referenced object, means that some part of your program still maintains a pointer to that object. An unused object, or unreferenced object, is no longer referenced by any part of your program. So the memory used by an unreferenced object can be reclaimed. https://www.oracle.com/webfolder/technetwork/tutorials/obe/java/gc01/index.html

Interesting idea for a game! Really good, interactive teaching tool for a basics of how the Garbage collector works!

Usage of the theme is really innovative, I've never seen anything like this before! The game doesn't feel super game-y, but it's still really nice as a teaching tool!

This is interesting, could be used as a good teaching tool even though I'm not sure how much I'd consider it a game. Good work!

Indeed a very unique idea. I enjoyed the game, though I lost few first games because I wasn't really sure about the controls, maybe a small intro would be eventually in order. Else, a really fun concept that is enjoyable to play! Great job!

You couldn't make a more programmer's game than this. To make this game more on theme, you could've made it unwinnable, like having just 1 too many objects alive at the end.

This is amazing hahaha. I really appreciate the concept. I do think gameplay wise it's a little too simplistic. Since you can't free anything referenced by the stack you can safely just star GC and spam away. It would make it feel more like a game if there was a penalty to freeing something you shouldn't be able to. Also I think this would benefit from being more real-time. It seems too free to be able to start/stop GC

Interesting game. I got sloppy at the end and only had 88% accuracy.

This is a cool game that makes me feel like I'm on a programming course, but actually does do a really cool job at showing you what's going on inside Minecraft. Good work!

I remember when I was doing house repairs, almost three years ago, I had accumulated a lot of construction debris that I couldn't put anywhere, and it was lying in my backyard and in front of the lawn. There were also bags of vacuum cleaner waste in this garbage. A friend who is engaged in construction advised me to find out dumpster rental prices Lafayette LA, so that later I can order a large dumpster and take out all the garbage that has accumulated during the repair. I thought it was a great idea and listened to a friend's advice, since I had no other options. Very convenient service and to all, who have done repairs, I have always advised to use such services as it is very good and saves time.
