Handsel and Gretel and Snakes by Jeremy Selwyn

[raw]
made by Jeremy Selwyn for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

A game about delaying the inevitable barfing

The game only supports controllers right now unfortunately

Controls:

Left stick to Move.

Left trigger to jump. (uses three energy).

Right trigger to dash. (uses one energy).

Explaination of Gameplay:

Survive as long as you can, and rack up the highest score you can.

The two ways to loose:

  1. Fill up your barf meter. Hitting one object gives you a letter, if you get 5 letters (b,a,r,f,d) you loose.

  2. You run out of time.

you gain more time by reaching the generators (the next generators direction is indicated by the flashing purple orb).

Pickups give you energy and a tiny time boost:

  1. Snakes are safe, eat them for energy and time. if you eat the whole snake you will reduce one barf letter on the barf counter.

  2. Candy (the box shaped objects) are safe too, eat them for time and energy.

Advoid:

  1. Walls, they will hurt you. go around them or jump over them.

  2. Spikes, and bullets these will hurt you if you hit them. you can:

a. jump over them,

b. advoid them,

c. spin into them to destroy them.

  1. the cannons shoot the bullets you can spin into them to destory them.

Look out for machines to trade energy for barf letters or time.

Good luck.

Honestly the movement in this game was really fun to just play around with, I think if you put this in a different game with less restrictions on when you can dash/jump you would have a really fun game. The visuals and tutorial are a little hard to look at mostly because the level is super cluttered.

That was a whole lot of fun. I just loved the way the movement works. I could have swum around that room all day.

The controls and animations are awesome! This little character is fun to move around. Graphics are a little "too-much" for me, but I guess this kind of style works pretty well! It's not your music but you made a great choice. Good job overall! I think it would be better to make the beginning of the tutorial in a more classic way, it's easy to get lost and to die right à the beginning.

(mmmh, tasty snakes)

@bitlytic, @aflatthrasher @chocolat-endive, thank you very much for the feedback. Really happy you liked the movement, its very encouraging to hear. Might keep working on it after the jam. Trying to improve the tutorial, the over all busyiness of the levels and art.

Game has very unique look) in some way it works in it's favour, but in turms of learning the basics - probably not. But still it's always nice to see someone being brave to implement something out of the box. And also I feel like with some tweaking this game has speedruning potential)

I love the surreal mood of this game! Also the movement is very unique! But when it's game over, instead of restarting the game, it just closes out the application. It would be more convenient if it the game reset in-game. Other than that, great game!

Good job with the game. I had a good time playing it and it was pretty satisfying to move around especially when you get chain of the energy cubes to fly through. I was also the fan of the kind of trippy aesthetic design which gave the game a cool feel. It did feel like the dash ability was a bit inconsistent in how much speed you would get from it, sometimes I felt like it didnt really give the boost when I used it.

@corporation Thank you for playing the game and the feedback. Its great to hear the game has speed running potential, good motivation to fix it up. I agree it could use more clear introduction and clearer art.

@cloud-studios Thank you for the feedback and for playing. Im happy to hear you liked the surreal mood! Think there must be a bug in the game because It is supposed to restart when its game over.

Cool game! The graphics, sound, and fluidity of the movement came together nicely to create a distinct and noticeable mood. Not exactly sure how I'd describe that mood in words, but I enjoyed it. Really pleasant to play!

I really enjoyed this! The style of this is completely chaotic and I love it. Controls felt a little weird at first, but once I got the hang of them worked really well.
