Death and Taxes by DingoBandito

[raw]
made by DingoBandito for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

In this blood-curling card game you must avoid as many taxes as you can while still living out your fragile mortal life! Will you succumb to the inevitability of death or pay your taxes like a good citizen?

Each card represents your choice for the day, they all have consequences, even the ones you don't choose.

Known issues: - Sometimes you can get softlocked if you can't afford any cards. There is a system in place to avoid this but for some reason it fails sometimes

I really like how well it fits the theme, and the graphics that you worked with! On my first run I was softlocked but besides that I enjoyed the game :)

"I do not have money to go to hospital or pay taxes, the only choice I have is spending health to get a better job even though I am already unhealthy." Oh no, this is too real, lol. Very funny and interesting idea. I was locked because all three cards cost money which I don't have. It would be nice if there is an option for me to cry on my bed and do nothing that day(choose none of the cards). Overall a very fun game, good job.

I like it, I like how you can go from joining the mafia one week to working a little overtime the next, and I liked all the little flourishes on the cards. The difficulty seems to plateau (assuming you don't sell your soul) since the "new job" compounds. I got to day 150 and was making 50$ a day and nothing could really stop me.

Interesting entry! Got caught in a situation when I couldn't afford any of the cards and had to restart the game, maybe there should be a way to get out of this. In the long run it seems that always getting better jobs, bribing police & waiting for cheap or free hospital visits is the way to go, making holiday, gym & taxes cards kind of obsolete. Of course it's fine for a jam game to have balancing problem, so, good job :)

Amazing game concept.

Sadly, I got hit by the softlock issue where I ran out of possible options.

The card choice balance was conceptually nice but the balance seemed like it could use some tightening. Sometimes the relative prices for things swung wildly.

I wish the game had a soundtrack to set the mood more.

Easy to play and very intuitive, however. I had no usability or clarity issues, which is impressive for a jam game. Thanks for making this!

Nice game that plays around with numericals. I really liked the "selling your soul" option too.

Interesting game, I ended up selling my soul, and some organs while I were at it, dying a slow, inevitable death in order to not have to worry about taxes. Nice
