"Panic" - for Ludum Dare 50

Sometimes you have to face your biggest fears, whether snakes, storms, bungie jumping, or even people. You take on the job of a delivery person, but in this gated community, there are a bit too many folks for your comfort. Challenge yourself to deliver as many items as possible before the inevitable happens.

CONTROLS

  • WASD to move
  • LSHIFT to sprint
  • SPACEBAR to jump

Available in browser or through a download on the itch.io page!

POST-JAM FIXES:

  • Attempt at fixing mouse sensitivity
  • Fixed scale of people (they were either too big or too small!)
  • Fixed jump going higher than intended
  • Fixed stamina meter depleting without moving
  • Adjusted stamina regen values
  • Fixed picking up deliveries not working
  • Adjusted "how to play" section to give correct information
  • Adjusted some settings to improve performance when using Chrome (it runs better using Firefox!)

One of the most stressful entries in here! I've reach score 137, the game plays very well, and it is fun & challenging to play, i would add sensitivity as mine was very high and couldn't enjoy most of the quick turning events "most people group".

Awesome job :v:

@ds-nahogara thanks for checking it out! I'm glad you enjoyed it. The sensitivity was definitely something I was unsure of. Thank you for the feedback!

defiantly one of the most emotion evoking games I've played. The game succeeded on making the player feel uncomfortable. The only thing that broke the immersion was the player's buff legs, giving the player a 10-meter-high jump.

@maneggadverureman thank you for giving it a shot! I can definitely see how the exo-skeleton power jump breaks immersion 😅 Thank you for the feedback!

This game puts an interesting spin on the theme! I love the concept of it and the general gameplay loop. The idea of having to work but finding dealing with people to be anxiety-inducing is one that I'm sure many people can relate to.

There were a few issues where I walked over a bag but it didn't pick it up. Also I had to turn down my mouse sensitivity a lot (that's not too unusual for me). Aside from that, I think you did a good job!

Well done!

Nice use of the theme! I liked the game after I figured it out, but some ingame instructions might help.

@human-writes-code Thanks for checking it out! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for reporting the bug, I'll add it to my list 😅 The sensitivity definitely seems to be high up there.

@arzi Thanks for the kind words, and for trying it! I'm assuming you mean additional instructions on the delivery system in the "How to play" menu. I'll add that to my list as well 😄

The theme is really well handled and it's cool that you built in a tutorial and super easy to just pick up and play.

The controls were super sensitive, so moving the mouse just a tiny bit made you spin around.
The camera seems a bit to high for the human characters, as you feel like a giant and the other people relatively small.
Maybe it would be an idea to re-evaluate the motif of picking up and delivering items could be something that supports the theme / game name a bit more.
Nice work overall.

Absolutely solid entry. One of my favorites so far. Wow what a trip, my vision is still spinning. Similar premise to my game. I think we all really know why we're avoiding other people: Covid-19!!! HAHAHah
This is really original, and the sound-effects/music/and creepiness to everyone worked together perfectly. Excellent job!!!

@cyangmou I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful (I've updated it to mention the delivery aspect of the game). I also tried fixing the mouse sensitivity following a few comments on the topic. I've adjusted some of the settings in regards to deliveries vs. panic as well. Thanks for the feedback and giving it a try!

@mrevilguy Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you liked it!

Your idea is quite unique. I got 22 deliveries before I stopped. Overall, I think the game was a bit too easy. Unfortunately, the issue with the sensitivity remained.

Now that's an aptly-named game! Reminds me of the peak of the Covid pandemic... Great gameplay, great mood, and awesome package overall. I loved the care put into the design of the town and the difficult curve, as well as the take on the theme.

Strengths:
- Great difficulty curve: the game starts out simple, but quickly turns into an aggrophobic nightmare
- The soundscape is awesome; great voice acting!
- Cool strategies can be elaborated.

Possible improvements:
- Decreasing the panic bar a bit more quickly once you are hidden might make the experience more dynamic
- Mouse controls are very sensitive in HTML5

Overall, fantastic game!

@rmrvar wow! That's a lot of deliveries. Perhaps it's slightly on the easier side. I submitted a new fix for the mouse sensitivity. I think I got it this time 😅 Thanks for checking it out!

@collin-visser Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

@jlv I'm super happy that the emotions were properly conveyed through the various elements 😄 Thanks for the kind words. Hopefully my latest fix for the mouse sensitivity solved the issue (I think it did, but we never know - different setups and all that). Thanks for giving it a try!

The anxiety was palpable. It's like Crazy Taxi but instead of zipping through town you're on the verge of a panic attack. Thank you for sharing!

Really good concept and execution; the panic system worked really well with sudden increases and slowly decreasing when you try and get some privacy (when a person inevitably wanders into your personal space).

The game was genuinely anxiety inducing right off the bat, so good job nailing that mood.

This is an interesting idea. I think maybe an arrow to show the direction to a drop off point might be nice, but the level was small enough that it wasn't a big problem to find them, except for all the crowds!

Wow. This feels terrifying. Luckily, I don't know this feeling, but your game well transports it. I felt ... bad while playing, trying to avoid people.
Really good graphics and very very fitting sound. Only thing on sound: it immediately starts very strong, even at the beginning there are no others. I think an increase of anxiety would be great addition. Even there is the panic meter, I was surprised how fast/ suddenly the end came. I was expecting a bit slower increase, as at the beginning/ middle it was easy to avoid/ even get quite close to people.
Overall: impressive!!!!!
Your game transports very well the panic.

This is a really interesting concept. I enjoyed exploring the city and was surprised there were vertical areas to reach by spamming jump. Some of the people walking looked weird, but it gave them a creepy sort of appearance so maybe that was intentional. Great work, solid entry!

@diccuric-sigeon well done, that's a great score 😲

@gamebucha thank you!

@quite-good thank you, I'm happy it worked for you!

@steve7411 thanks! You're right, having some kind of indicator would be great. I tried looking into some shaders, but I couldn't put it together. Maybe I'll try to add it eventually!

@itzemii Thanks for the feedback! I agree the sound at the start is probably a bit louder than it needs to be 😄

@don-fouts thanks for checking it out! You're the first one to mention verticality 🕵️‍♂️ I'm glad you enjoyed it 😁 Pachinko is life!!!

If you were going for social anxiety in game form, this hit it pretty well. Nice job on the environment. The character did feel a bit sluggish to maneuver, but maybe it just seemed that way because of the camera view. Still, overall a nice little game.

The music is really oppressive, fit well the game, well done! At least a game were avoiding people is a plus, also liked that you could reach a relaxing place somewhere, even though you have to look around a bit to find it :)
