For Ludum Dare 50, I took a break from horror to try out something a little bit... different.

About the game

In The Scraps of Victory you fight for your life against a horde of rampaging beasts who would like nothing more than for you to starve to death. Use your ninja-like reflexes to dodge the vile monsters, and savor your victory.

I've wanted to make a game like this for some time, a game which uses physics to make you balance something. There is just something so fun and chaotic about using physics in games. I hope you enjoy it!

Controls

You control your hand using the mouse cursor on PC, or using the Touchscreen on mobile. The game should hopefully be compatible with most devices, although I have only tried it on PC and iPhone.

Development

The game was written in vanilla Javascript.

The game is rendered using a combination of Three.js and classic 2D canvas. This is something I have thought about before but never really put seriously into practice. Three.js renders the game world and other (technically 3D objects), while the 2D canvas is used for quick and dynamic effects. This combination allows for a quick development cycle as you don't need to spend a significant amount of time making your one-off effect work inside a 3D world.

For physics I used the p2 Javascript physics engine. Sadly it was a lot buggier than I remembered, which led to some time wasted just debugging the physics and timesteps.

The graphics were created using Blender and my own vector editor Canvas Draw 2D.

Oh this was so fun I love the little cat paw! I really like the physics of it, it's quite hard but it was really cute! Congrats!

I love the game. It really is a good choice for the theme. I haven't see one like this yet. Good Job!

really impressive that you did that in vanilla js. Not much gameplay but on all other fronts it is just great. The graphics look great, it plays smooth, and the idea and "dialog" is very funny

This was hilarious before I even played it.

Simple idea, great execution.

A small margin for failure woulda been nice though, like at least half of the fillings need to stay on the plate but if you lose a piece of bread then you have failed at sandwich satisfaction.

Liked this a lot!

Great game! haven't seen something like this before. I was super impressed with the sandwich physics you made here. How did you manage to keep the sandwich stacked while the player moves so erratically?? One thing I would improve is to maybe add an indicator a short time before the paws come for your plate. As it is now it's pretty much hit or miss whether my sandwich survives or not.

Very cool concept and presentation. I really like how nicely the start screen transitions straight into gameplay. I could never survive more than one cat swipe though!

Really nice job!

Very fun game, I actually laughed a lot! :D
the concept is very unique and fit with the theme very well. IT can be a bit hard sometimes, the cat is really hard to predict. But sometime the physic give some nice surprises! for one level I finished with almost all my sandwich spilled everywhere in my plate XD

Good job, it's a nice entry

This is super underrated. A brilliant game, really.

Only got to the second level and the game mechanic is very, very wacky on how it feels to try and keep the sandwich on the plate, but come one, who would have thought about **that** while thinking of the theme? 5 fallen burgers out of 5

Really cool little game! I found actually* avoiding* the animals pretty difficult. I was kinda making it until the bird came in, but after that it was game over. Maybe a little more friendly sandwich physics while moving the plate around would be nice? I super respect the hecticness of recovering when the sandwich is hit, but I want a *little* more maneuverability

Amazing, absolutely fabulous game! Every new day brought both joy and terror. The art was super cute, the dialog was funny, and it was fun to play. I was very much not expecting the Saturday animal, it was a very funny surprise. Great job!

Brilliant idea, and a really fun execution!

It did feel like the final level was a little easier than the rest, but maybe the first levels just made me a sandwich juggling master ^^

Probably the funniest way to adapt the jams theme I've seen so far. Great game overall! I cant get past that damn bird though. :D

Thank you all a lot for the feedback!

@autogibbon Yeah there should have been a slight margin for error, like that you could drop a certain percent of the sandwich or that only the top piece of bread must be kept intact.

@renge @nardandas The sandwich is kept in place using a combination of friction and correctional forces (based on distance from center and height). It took a lot of tweaking to get it to feel somewhat good. If the friction was too high, the sandwich couldn't correct itself. If it was too low the entire thing slipped around like a pile of soap.

First of all, the fact that this is native Javascrips blows my mind. The fake 3D was amazing just like the rest of the graphics (even though there were some minor glitches here and there but nothing game breaking), the gameplay struck a nice balance between frustrating and rewarding and the gameplay elements being introduced one after the other gave a nice sense of progress. Overall fantastic job.

This game plays so well, I really don't know how the controls work so well... The graphics look amazing and the audio is also super fitting. I never managed to get past the 2nd secondwich, but still... I had a blast! Well done!

Those damn animals!

Very tricky, I got past Thursday and had to give up for now.
Great work, it was both fun and frustrating and reminds me why I let the cats here look at the food and decide they don't want to eat it.

Who leaves the bone in their sandwich!?!
