Hummingbird by Madbarron

[raw]
made by Madbarron for Ludum Dare 50 (EXTRA)

Title-master.png Lunar Lander meets Flappy Bird in this challenging physics-based dexterity game you can play in your browser. Takes 5 minutes or less!

Controls

  • Click: flap
  • M: mute/unmute
  • R, Q, Esc: quit

Instructions

  1. Click somewhere to flap in that direction. Flapping costs energy. Click farther away to flap harder.
  2. Replenish energy by spending time at a flower.
  3. Eat spiders to increase your score.
  4. Eventually, you will run out of energy or get bored. Thus, the theme is realized.

Tips

  1. Be calm. Don't get going so fast that you can't slow down. Don't flap downwards; just wait for gravity to do the work for you.
  2. Spend some time at each flower to top up to full energy.
  3. Try out Pollinator Mode to practice with unlimited energy. Press R or Esc to go back to the menu.

This was a solo project, completed in a week. Free assets were used for graphics and for the bird sounds.

Really fun concept . Kind of hard to judge the force you are flapping and staying on a flower seems to be less efficient while the opposite would promote you flapping around the flower rather than just jumping to it.
Adding a tiredness meter to force you down would really sell the humming bird feel of rushing to a flower float next to it and then go to the ground to recuperate then do it all over again.

Some Change to the background would have been nice to at the end i was kinda dizy with the repeating patern

The flapping is pretty tricky, I think if you decayed horizontal velocity it would be more intuitive. Good job on attempting a unique mechanic, I think the world needs more flapping games!

Nice! I do like physics-based movement games. It was a little difficult for me to hang out consistently near a flower, since it felt like some clicks were much more powerful than others - probably just an illusion based on the movement.
While I didn't like dying, I really liked the rolling bird in the corner of the tilted camera XD

I like the simple concept, implemented pretty well, the graphics are simple as well, and I had fun with it! I like how you have to stay on a flower to suck up the energy from it, other than that the controls, though awkward, presents a challenge, so yea, pretty fun overall

I liked the graphics, and the change in the song as you die I thought was good.

The controls were pretty tough, even in pollinator mode. I think significantly clamping the amount of speed applied when you click would make the game more interesting. As it stands, it felt like any energy I regained was accidental and I never really grasped the movement.

I _did_ enjoy the art and the music!

It was difficult to gauge my flaps so some kind of related UI element would be a nice addition. It did lead to some amusing hypersonic speed and rolling across the ground, though.

This is a great game! Once I got my sea legs (bird... wings?) with the movement I really felt like I was in control, and hovering at a flower for a bit before moving on to the next feels really good - I *was* the hummingbird. Nice job!

Good concept. I like the art quite a bit. Gameplay was a bit too tough for me though, lol. Good work though!

I never knew how hard it was to be a bird.

The music is calming, and the game fits the theme well.

I did find the game to be very difficult, but this did not really bother me because the game is relaxing.

A very decent effort! I appreciate heavily the inclusion of different difficulty modes! The bird was really fun to control and I can see this being a decent mobile game with a bit of polish. Well done!

Difficult, but rewarding. The quotes are a very interesting addition. Overall, the game has a relaxing vibe and doesn't get boring or angering at any point.

Nice, simple and polished. Had a few minute of relaxing fun.

Turning flowers to white color while draining their nectar is a nice touch.

But why is upwards movement to hard, while going sideways you can easily reach Mach 3
