Rough Day

NOTE (Oct 3 2022)

It looks like the issues with the hosting of WebGL games on Ludum Dare have been resolved (yay!), in the event they pop up again and you are looking to play in a browser you can do that here as well (hosted on itch.io). For the best performance you can download the build for PC below as well. Thank you and enjoy!

ChangeLog and Post-Jam Updates (Oct 5 2022)

Thank you to those who played and left some great feedback! We've already made some changes to improve the experience which I will note here. These will have to wait until after the jam to go live to respect the rules but if you would like to check it out again when the voting is done and the itch page is updated with the new builds that would be great so you can see the results of your feedback :)

Version 1.1

  • Improved Mini-Map: The mini-map/radar has been slightly enlarged, and it now shows walls, this makes it vastly more readable/useful in particular in the beginning as you get the layout.
  • New events! (You'll have to play to find/see them)
  • Many more sound effects for individual events and NPCs responding to various situations, including the much requested audio feedback for success/failure of events.
  • Improvements to the map including an added door for less frustration navigating the space.

What is it?

Rough Day puts you in the shoes of the Office Janitor at "Running Man"

Can you keep a lid on all the madness in what is no doubt the roughest day of your career? Put out trash fires (literal ones), fix jammed printers, reset the server, bring people their caffeine fixes, deliver those crucial useless trinkets from Amazon the staff keeps ordering and fix those toilet clogs... All in a day's work...

Get through the 300 second day in one piece and get rewarded with a nice pat on the back and a high score. You got this!

How do I play?

  • Rough Day supports keyboard and gamepad input:

    • Left stick/WASD Movement
    • East Button/E key to interact
    • South Button/Space bar to jump
    • Right stick/mouse to move the camera
    • Left Trigger/Shift to sprint
  • Move around the office and deal with incidents. Some incidents require items (package deliveries and coffee for example).

  • Deal with each crisis before it's too late. Miss five events and your day will end early. Get through the 300 second day and you shall be rewarded.

  • The mini-map shows you nearby incidents:

    • Green are active incidents to deal with
    • Blue is a recently resolved issue
    • Red is a missed incident
  • Music can be disabled/enabled or turned up/down from the options menu (available from the pause menu as well). It originates from the Juke Box in the lobby.

Share your score!

Share your score in a screenshot below to show everyone how much of an office here you are! :)

The team and the work:

While we used a number of assets in this project, putting it together in the timeframe was (as always with LD!) a challenge. Let us know if you encounter bugs of course! While extended development might not be likely on this project, we definitely had a ton of further ideas to make the game better (more engaging, longer, more funny, etc...) but we'd also love to hear your ideas!

We have opted out of the Audio category as the music and the sound fx are provided by third parties and other than the technical rigging of these, there was not much effort involved. The graphics on the other hand involved a significant amount of work despite assets being used for the 3d models (as credited below) (Design, lighting, rigging).

great job with the environment and character art. It looks great and was fun to explore. Walking around looks and feels good on a controller, probably because of the animations. Nice job with that!

the gameplay was frustrating though because I had a hard time finding toilets and people (ESPECIALLY Linda). The minimap was confusing, although its probably my fault for not figuring it out lol.

Music was good and it definitely made the game feel intense af

Loved it! I was really bad at it but I feel like it's really fun to watch things burn! :)

@ale thank you for the feedback! :) I understand, one of our dev's kids had that feedback so we increased the fail limit to 10 (from 5 originally!). It's definitely easier the more you play as you learn where things are. There is also a map in the lobby :)

@migi I hear you! I am not the best at it either... I rarely play my own games well lol :) But yes, trash fires for the win for sure :)

Fun game! I had troubles finding the incidents, so I was wondering if there could be a way to make the minimap more helpful, maybe indicating walls or something. The 10 seconds felt a little intense, but that is the theme so I think it's cool you made it work!

really impressive visuals for a jam! did definitely capture the vibe of an, as you call it, running man.

@anniv4x Indeed, something we knew going in was that it would be tough to find a lot of the "things" so the failure threshold was increased. It definitely takes a few plays to get a feeling, in particular for things needing items (like packages, cofee, mop, extinguisher :)). One thing we pondered was a directional indicator but felt it might break immersion too much :)

@jess-from-online Thank you! The 3d Assets are the work of the fabulous [Synty Studios](https://www.syntystudios.com/) for the most part so we can't take credit, although like I mentioned above, putting all that together with decent lighting is still a big effort over 3 days so any graphics score should be for the design/layout/UI and lighting and not the work on the models since that is not ours to be honest :)

Really crazy game!

I like it but it's really stressful!

Good work!

@hagamosvideojuegos Thank you for checking it out! Sorry for any undue stress! It definitely makes you feel a little like being pulled many directions in an actual office haha :)

Hectic, chaotic, stressful, and tons of fun. I love it! I absolutely sucked at it, and I couldn't for the life of me find Kate to give her her god damn coffee, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Knocked it out of the park, really impressed!

My best was 923, and I loved it! It was absolute chaos in the bathroom, and everyone wanted coffee or packages! 5/5

@sleepymenace lol thank you! :) Kate is in the office at the SE (bottom right), she's the CEO of "Running Man". Thank you so much for the wonderful comments :)

@sillyman987 Thank you for the lovely comments! Haha, we found the best strategy was to carry a few coffees around (they don't seem to mind if they're not hot!) or maybe 2 coffees, a mop and a fire extinguisher :)

Fun and very polished! Got around 1300 points as my high score. Like others have said, the first time you are playing it is really difficult to find everything. Maybe a tutorial could help where you do every task one after another without a time limit?

Also I managed to fill up my inventory with coffee cups and couldn't do any other tasks that required an item until I got rid of the coffee lol.

The total chaos is fun! I like that the game has a learning curve, and you can win in only after some tries and familiarizing yourself with the office. The environment is nice - just complicated enough to be fun to explore, but not so complicated to be frustrating.

I found it best to pick up things as you go about your tasks, so you always have a bucket, fire extinguisher and like two coffee cups handy. I can just imagine the poor janitor running around with all of that

The game could use more player feedback - especially some visual or audio feedback from people when you give them things. I often found myself thinking I delivered the package, only to notice that I didn't really while I was already running to my next task. Or maybe just a button prompt appearing when you are actually targeting the thing correctly would be enough :)

@parkuhrmd Thank you for the comments! Absolutely, that first play through will likely be over fast as you figure out where things are :) There is a map on the in game wall when you start but it doesn't really tell you exactly where to find things for sure. Perhaps even an "explore the office" mode where you can go see everything casually would serve well. Maybe for post-jam we can add something like this :)

I've definitely also not had inventory space for needed things at some point haha :) There is a total of 4 objects that can be picked up and the coffee cup is probably the one worth carrying multiples of at least :)

@fabula-rasa Thank you for playing and for the comments! :) Definitely, probably the worst/best thing is how hard it is the first run not knowing anything... but then again probably exactly what it would be like on the first day haha. You got it on holding inventory for sure!

Noted on feedback, we wanted more sounds (some events don't have any even) but we were adding that in the last hour so time just ran out on that. People making noises like "FIRE!" was pretty much next up on the list :)

@fabula-rasa that's a pretty good score too! I think the highest I've seen is low 5000s (from one of our team's kids). I'll add a note asking people to share :)

This game was pretty cool! Like the enviroment and the characters, although i played for a short time and it was difficult using the map, i can see how people would enjoy this a lot! Very good game for a game jam.

An impressive amount of gameplay features, and the concept and visual design are both charming. I think my notes would be pretty similar to what others have said - it could use more visual and auditory queues to help you understand where things are and what to do. It does get easier after playing for a bit, but it is pretty confusing for the first while.
🎤 PicusBGames
05. Oct 2022 · 22:07 UTC
@geronimo Thank you! The mini map has been vastly improved now to include walls (makes a huge difference), but we have to wait till the jam is over to update :) I'll add a section for it up top since we've had some awesome feedback that we have to wait on due to the jam rules :)

@profundity Thank you for the feedback and for sure! We have some updates coming post jam for improvement. They just have to wait due to the rules but I'll note them in the readme above :)

Got around 2400 points. Very impressive how much you got done in 3 days. My only criticism is the performance. For me it was kinda laggy which made it a bit hard to play.
🎤 PicusBGames
06. Oct 2022 · 22:21 UTC
@Savolae Thank you! As mentioned above, the models and textures are licensed from [Synty Studios](https://www.syntystudios.com/) (they are amazing, I definitely recommend checking them out!) and the audio is 100% tracks I have purchased as well. That really cuts down on some of the work of course, and allows for 3 days of design and development. Definitely still a lot of work, but without those two things it would take longer to get going.
🎤 PicusBGames
06. Oct 2022 · 22:22 UTC
@justaroom Thank you! Indeed, we didn't do a lot of optimization and we needed some more tweaking with lighting. It is likely the post-jam versions will be a bit smoother overall. Apologies if it detracted from the experience!

🎤 PicusBGames
09. Oct 2022 · 21:32 UTC
@mrbamboo The most important mission! :) In our case that would be bringing Kate (bottom left office, CEO) her coffee haha. It's a good theme for 10 seconds since it's a hectic timeline for events and most people can relate to a hectic office :) I'll give yours a go in a moment :)

🎤 PicusBGames
10. Oct 2022 · 19:20 UTC
@armenbalian Thank you for playing and for the comments! We acknowledge that the learning curve is a bit steep since you have to learn the layout to be able to effectively tackle multiple fast-paced incidents. The first post-jam patch will help a bit by adding a better mini-map and some better audio feedback amongst other things :)

Awesome game! I liked a lot, I have some problems to interact with a couple of fires and see a few collision problems but I really enjoy it, great low poly grahpics, a lot of details, really impressive, very good player movement, I keep exploring the level beacause the level of details is amazing, they even put toilet paper in the bathroom lol, very polished, thanks for the experience, hugh work! congrats!
🎤 PicusBGames
20. Oct 2022 · 17:14 UTC
@dreamerflow Thank you for the feedback! For the fires, do you mean the interact button didn't appear to work even with the fire extinguisher in the inventory? In general we have improved the feedback (added success and failure sounds for tasks for example) for the first post-jam version but I'd be curious if maybe the area was too small or something else was causing that :) Thank you for the kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
