To Catch a Wizard by badcop
Unfortunately, you're the one who's been caught.
You are a seasoned veteran in the world of wizard magic; there's just one problem. Your arch-nemesis. He always has the upper hand, and you've fallen victim to his magic again.
He has devised his most cunning trap yet; a dungeon, cursed with a spell that only allows its inhabitants to live their lives 10 seconds at a time. To add salt to the wound, he's scattered all of your most prized possessions just out of reach.
Will you escape, or are you doomed to spend the rest of your life trapped in this evil labyrinth?
Controls
- WASD for movement
- R to trigger the rewind event early (unnecessary, unless you're speedrunning)
Notes
- this game is unfortunately bring-your-own-music; I ran out of time, and didn't want to ship it with the awful annoying track I had come up with :p
Changelog
These are minor changes I made during the jam. The originally uploaded files are still available if you'd like to play those instead.
- 10/3/2022 - Added z/x as alternate keys for dash (shift wasn't working for some people)

This was great. It took me a bit to get used to the platformer controls but once I had a good feel for that it was fun. Some of the edges preventing you from dashing are rage inducing but I think that's part of the charm of this game.
I absolutely loved the boss fight. I initially thought you have to fight the arch nemesis by blowing up their own spells in their face but later found out about the destructible ceiling.
I think it would be good to introduce that concept before the boss fight so that people can figure that out quicker and not get stuck trying to time the boss spells.
I think? you can damage the boss by timing their spell cast but it's hard to do. Adding some kind of telegraphing of the cast, for example by making the staff charge up with some light would add another fun element to this.
Finally, I think the rewinding would've been nice to incorporate into the boss fight somehow.
Real fun game!
Did not figure out how to damage the boss for a long time, gave up, but went back after watching the hall of fame video. The wizard's projectiles did get a bit overwhelming at times but eventually figured out how jump and dash around them.
The fight was still immensely frustrating, and I'm not quite sure whether it was the good type of soulslike frustration, the fight needs polishing, or I'm just too big of a noob.
Outside the boss room, the game was very enjoyable. Figuring out the pathing/puzzles was fun and the timing constraint was just right. Great compo entry overall!
As others have said, the boss is extremely difficult - I got to the second phase, but couldn't beat him after about 30 tries. My biggest gripe was shooting his wildfire-ball when it's fairly close but hasn't hit you still results in death. Awesome game!
Good job!
Great work and bonus points for the stylish rewind effect.

Really like what you did with the theme!
I REALLY liked the platforming puzzles. Even though it was easy, it was fun, and it was built well enough that each time I got an upgrade it properly unlocked a new path - a small metroidvania if you may, which are surprisingly hard to design properly, yet you did it! The graphics did what they were meant to do. The small downside I found was that aiming the magic was a bit off, especially in the bossfight I felt it. I had moments where I was 100% confident I shot right at the enemy orbs but NOPE :D Probably mostly user error/bias though.
Thank you for your submission! Might get back to speedrun it later!
Masterpiece!
In the end I'm be like "Dormammu I've Come To Bargain".

got 11.50.161
The only oddity that got to me really was pressing enter instead of space/z/x for the dialogue boxes but that was it. Fun!
Had some issues with jumping and the 10 seconds rewind was a little frustating sometimes.
Solid entry here!!
Also a damn hard final boss fight and some very very weird torches that had me confused until someone figured it out. Plus side though those boots do come 9in handy during it considering how slow you are normally.
Anyway though, review stuff, I'd say the boss fight is crazy hard, interesting, but hard. Also a little weird that it ignores the 10 seconds, it sort of makes sense, for letting you actually fight it, but also not so much. Also would probably be good to make it a little clearer that the way to fight the boss is to shoot the roof abvoice him. And tbh, I was sorta surprised that the final phase didn't end with you breaking the middle roof out from over him and having lava fall or something.
One helpful thing, that tbf would be a little powerful for speedrunners so maybe not, but being able to reset faster could be nice, sometimes. Cause there were a few times that I was kinda just dead, wait a few repeat for a bit. That or some way to "short" reset maybe. Just for fixing mistakes. That or a little more leniency on a couple of the pits.
Also on the clarity of some of the art I would say the door to the final scroll was a little weird since it didn't have a key, though it's the compo so I'm not surprised, but it would be a little nicer if it was a different door. Or I may have just missed the difference. That and, and this might just be me as well, the torches looked like lanterns, mostly due to how bright the wood was. So that confused me a bit.
So far my best time is 2:39, let's see if I can get faster
One thing specifically that was tough about the boss was in the final phase when he launched three fireballs, one of them would sometimes end up so far beneath the level that I'd forget about it until it looped back around and got me. Maybe if the green fireballs had a time to live, or if they destroyed themselves if they got too far out of the arena that would have made things easier for me.
Also that boss is totally a sponge! A would have liked to see a healthbar for them or something so that I would have a better idea that I was hurting them. You could even fake out the player with two healthbars since you have a multi-phase boss and everything.
Thanks for the game! I had a lot of fun
My type of game. Impressing stuff for a compo game. I wish we had an annoying music in this game though. It'd increase my rage levels perfectly during the boss bit :D
oh wait, and it's a compo game??!! wow
Almost 20 min of pain, but all very well worth it! Kinda nuts that you were able to crank all of this out under Compo constraints, nice job!
That boss can burn in hell... :smiling_imp:
I liked the graphics. The reverse effect is super cool. The fireballs also look great and the fact that they play the explosion sound effect in stereo according to where they exploded is very neat. The timer not starting until you actually move is a very nice touch.
I think the jumping might have felt a bit better for the player with the addition of some coyote time, but it was still fine even now. The bosses fireball attacks felt like they hit me a bit too early every time -- maybe their hitbox could have been a bit smaller, phase 2 also felt a bit too tanky -- I was wondering for a bit if I should be doing something else, but figuring the boss out was very cool besides that :). Good job making the game :)!
My time was 16:16, probably not the world record :D.
The boss was, not the greatest to be honest.
My fireball hitbox felt far too small and that poison cloud felt HUGE.
This was especially a problem given that the poison clouds sometimes just, went under the borders and I would be stuck trying to guess where it would pop up. The other solution would be a faster attack time as that long of a delay on a missed shot that visually hits is pretty much guaranteed death.
Balancing is HARD in a game jam, though. I'm super impressed by the entry. I would love to play it again if an easier mode a la boss fight were to be made. =)
Thank you for the fun time!
Need to edit in: I loved the level design, the graphics and audio and everything else were absolutely mint.

On a technical note the window title is "LD51 (DEBUG)", might be a debug build? Also on my first attempt I couldn't light up the torches with fireballs, but at least after a restart it's fast to get to that point when you know what to do, love games that let you do that :D
Apart from that, this game is one of the best of the jam! Really solid idea, looks amazing, great innovation on the concept.
I had a blast playing it, and if I didn't pinch my nerve in my left arm making half of my hand numb from working too hard in the game jam that weekend, THAT WIZARD WOULD HAVE GONE DOWN! Thanks for the fun game! I look forward to the next one!

Rewinding exactly 10 seconds every 10 seconds is beautifully frustrating in the best way. The path through the puzzles is also really well done. Some of the mechanical preciseness was a bit too difficult, and I agree with other commenters that head bonks on low ceiling corners were really frustrating, but along with, like, jumps feeling a little slow (at least in part because of the coyote time thing you mentioned you had heard already), that's all just little tweaks for polish, and it's already got a lot of polish for a jam game.
Good work!
