Cook'n'Slash! by Nikolay Zapolnov

Hey you, freaking tomato! You think you're the boss? Oh, poor vegetable... That's my kitchen! These are my rules! So c'mon, let's do this quick. Because every 10 seconds we should make a new meal!
Have you ever imagined what's hidden behind the curtain of a regular eco-friendly Michelin restaurant? Let me guess: your imagination draws a well-taught chef, agile cooks and vegetables peacefully resting in a refrigerator.
That's not true!
Our game, Cook'n'Slash! reveals the dark side of the restaurant business: you gotta kill before the meal! And also try not to be killed...
In Cook'n'Slash! you'll play as a restaurant chef, massacring vegetables. Their guts will flood the scene, but you should follow the recipe and cook fast, because every 10 seconds your automatic stove fries whatever is in the pan.
- 10 brilliant recipes (don't try them at home!);
- Peaceful farm atmosphere;
- Michelin stars reward system;
- Arsenal of various knifes and other cooking tools.
Play Cook'n'Slash right now. We'll show you the true cook madness!
Controls:
- WASD to move.
- MOUSE to aim.
- LMB (hold or click) to attack.
- Numbers to choose a weapon. 1 always selects fork. The fork is not a weapon and does not hurt enemies! It is used only to carry ingredients into the pan!
- HOLD DOWN the LMB to carry the objects with a fork.
- ESC to pause or open menu.
Gameplay:
1) Chop enemies into pieces. If you manage to kill all the enemies, it brings you 1 Michelin star!
2) Every killed enemy adds you some extra time.
3) Grab enemy remainings with a fork and carry them into the pan.
4) Follow the recipe carefully. Every 10 seconds the contents of the pan is fried and the dish (right or not!) is prepared.
5) Every correct dish adds extra 5 seconds to the timer.
6) To get 2 Michelin stars you must kill every enemy on the level and prepare 1 right dish according to the recipe.
7) To get 3 Michelin stars you must kill every enemy and prepare 3 correct dishes and no wrong ones.
8) Watch the time: when the timer expires, the level is over, regardless of whether you managed to kill everyone or cook a meal.
Good luck!

Notes for giving rating:
As we didn't have 2D artist on the team, UI elements (buttons, panels), Faces, Fonts and Particle Effects were taken from asset store. All other graphics was made by us during the Jam. Please take this into account when rating graphics.
We highly recommend you to download the build for Windows!
This will ensure that you get the most out of the game.

I think the biggest issue with my playthrough though is that each tomato kill gives like 4~5 points at once sometimes. Maybe you can make it easier by allowing the points to go over the required number, instead of making it accept only the exact right amount. Otherwise you may have to fix the bug.
Other than that the idea and games is there. Great job! You definitely scored the humor bar as well.
edit: Okay I've decided to give this another try since I realized what the fork was for. I can definitely see the game now.
I also like the graphics, audio and humor :)
It was frustrating sometimes picking with the fork, I wished if the aim was more forgiving. Other than that, it was fun playing your game :slight_smile:
In all seriousness that's a 4.5 on overall, fun & graphics and a 5 on innovation. Here's my reasoning:
Amazing concept. When I first saw this I thought "ahh wow, original, another cook food in 10 seconds sim"
Then I realise it's a freaking topdown (kind of topdown), melee combat game that combines the puzzle of cooking, the stress-factor of the time with the tried-and-tested 3rd person combat thingie. I love it. It reminds me of the LD-theme "combine 2 incompatible genres" and I'm really, really impressed.
Then there were the graphics, which were really well-rounded. Good animations, good blends between animations (and trust me I know the struggle of that). AMAZING camera movement (better than many famous games)
I will say I did not play all levels because I'm short on time, but I had a blast playing your game.
I loved the vegetable-gore. Thanks for being awesome
My only suggestion would be to make it more immediately obvious that the pan's counter was going down. Although there was a big master timer at the top of the game, perhaps having one directly above the pan that only counts down from 10 would've been helpful! But in the grand scheme of building a game in 72 hours, I understand how that could've been a stretch goal.
Awesome entry!!!
Lastly -- and I hate to do this -- but I would really appreciate if you could rate my game (https://ldj.am/$303168). We currently also have less than 20 ratings so any help would be awesome! :)
So far this is the best entry in this LD for me
Is there a way to play the original version?
Other then that I really liked the sound and visual design
I wasn't able to try tour game today but will definitly do, seems like a really fun one!
By the way, have you thought about adding some more crazy weapons like grenades or RPG? Since the food is coming to life, the chef should also use some more powerful cooking utensils :smile:
I only had two issues with your game:
* First off the combat are too easy, you can just click on the left mouise button and go rambo and you'll be fine since there are so many health drop.
* I had some audio issues where two tracks were playing at the same time, which lead to ugly and weird audio. Which is a shame because your music and sound Fx are rally good ! And the character voiceover are absolutely marvelous !
A really good entry, congratulation to all of you !
Aside from the point that my pickup was really glitchy and would fail more often than not.
This made getting the items into the pan in the short time span really difficult. I would be sitting there stabbing at a tomato slice for 5 seconds.
I am the one who finds all the weird bugs though, so it's entirely possible I broke the game. >>;
Overall though this is a really impressive entry! If the way to bring ingredients to the frying pan was fixed, this would be beyond amazing. Thank you. :D
@otterfaelure Yeah, the animation and the collider for picking up have to be fixed. We kinda get used to it during development, but its obvious from comments and streamers that it causes problems. We will fix it!
To conclude, I still enjoyed the game and I think the idea is really very original
