Hey you, freaking tomato! You think you're the boss? Oh, poor vegetable... That's my kitchen! These are my rules! So c'mon, let's do this quick. Because every 10 seconds we should make a new meal!

Have you ever imagined what's hidden behind the curtain of a regular eco-friendly Michelin restaurant? Let me guess: your imagination draws a well-taught chef, agile cooks and vegetables peacefully resting in a refrigerator.

That's not true!

Our game, Cook'n'Slash! reveals the dark side of the restaurant business: you gotta kill before the meal! And also try not to be killed...

In Cook'n'Slash! you'll play as a restaurant chef, massacring vegetables. Their guts will flood the scene, but you should follow the recipe and cook fast, because every 10 seconds your automatic stove fries whatever is in the pan.

  • 10 brilliant recipes (don't try them at home!);
  • Peaceful farm atmosphere;
  • Michelin stars reward system;
  • Arsenal of various knifes and other cooking tools.

Play Cook'n'Slash right now. We'll show you the true cook madness!

Controls:

  • WASD to move.
  • MOUSE to aim.
  • LMB (hold or click) to attack.
  • Numbers to choose a weapon. 1 always selects fork. The fork is not a weapon and does not hurt enemies! It is used only to carry ingredients into the pan!
  • HOLD DOWN the LMB to carry the objects with a fork.
  • ESC to pause or open menu.

Gameplay:

1) Chop enemies into pieces. If you manage to kill all the enemies, it brings you 1 Michelin star!

2) Every killed enemy adds you some extra time.

3) Grab enemy remainings with a fork and carry them into the pan.

4) Follow the recipe carefully. Every 10 seconds the contents of the pan is fried and the dish (right or not!) is prepared.

5) Every correct dish adds extra 5 seconds to the timer.

6) To get 2 Michelin stars you must kill every enemy on the level and prepare 1 right dish according to the recipe.

7) To get 3 Michelin stars you must kill every enemy and prepare 3 correct dishes and no wrong ones.

8) Watch the time: when the timer expires, the level is over, regardless of whether you managed to kill everyone or cook a meal.

Good luck!

Notes for giving rating:

As we didn't have 2D artist on the team, UI elements (buttons, panels), Faces, Fonts and Particle Effects were taken from asset store. All other graphics was made by us during the Jam. Please take this into account when rating graphics.

We highly recommend you to download the build for Windows!

This will ensure that you get the most out of the game.

what i loved the most, were the voice overs for the enemy and especially the hurt sound of chiefcook himself :D :D

First of all congrats on making these wonderful 3d art in such a short time.

I think the biggest issue with my playthrough though is that each tomato kill gives like 4~5 points at once sometimes. Maybe you can make it easier by allowing the points to go over the required number, instead of making it accept only the exact right amount. Otherwise you may have to fix the bug.

Other than that the idea and games is there. Great job! You definitely scored the humor bar as well.

edit: Okay I've decided to give this another try since I realized what the fork was for. I can definitely see the game now.

I love the general idea of the game, but the controls were to difficult for me.
I also like the graphics, audio and humor :)

Hard to eat tomatoes after this :joy: Impressive what you have been able to achieve in such short amount of time.

It was frustrating sometimes picking with the fork, I wished if the aim was more forgiving. Other than that, it was fun playing your game

Very interesting, Graphics are great and the animations wow, im assuming they were created pre jam if not amazing work in so little time. Audio was good but when I restarted the level it doubled. Gameplay wise fighting the vegetables is fun but it becomes very difficult very quickly to make the dishes, 10 seconds is just too little time to cook all the food, maybe have it so you can carry more than 1 ingredient at a time. Over all good job.

First off, congrats on getting all this art done in such a short time! I had a real tough time with the fork until I realized I could just lure unsuspecting ingredients into the pan.

YOU HAVE ENLIGHTENED MY SOUL AND I SHALL DEDICATE THIS RELIGION TO THE COOKNSLASH GAME. COME NOW, JOIN US, WE SHALL MARCH TO CITY HALL AND OVERTAKE THE GOVERNMENT. EVERYONE SHALL PLAY COOKNSLASH, COOKNSLASH LOVE COOKNSLASH LIFE!

In all seriousness that's a 4.5 on overall, fun & graphics and a 5 on innovation. Here's my reasoning:

Amazing concept. When I first saw this I thought "ahh wow, original, another cook food in 10 seconds sim"
Then I realise it's a freaking topdown (kind of topdown), melee combat game that combines the puzzle of cooking, the stress-factor of the time with the tried-and-tested 3rd person combat thingie. I love it. It reminds me of the LD-theme "combine 2 incompatible genres" and I'm really, really impressed.

Then there were the graphics, which were really well-rounded. Good animations, good blends between animations (and trust me I know the struggle of that). AMAZING camera movement (better than many famous games)

I will say I did not play all levels because I'm short on time, but I had a blast playing your game.

I loved the vegetable-gore. Thanks for being awesome

This game is *awesome*. Running through the tomatoes and slashing at them in and of itself was enough to keep me entertained. I also love that this game makes you feel like you're getting better at it; I eventually developed a strategy of killing all the tomatoes, bringing the pieces by the fire, and then cooking. :)

My only suggestion would be to make it more immediately obvious that the pan's counter was going down. Although there was a big master timer at the top of the game, perhaps having one directly above the pan that only counts down from 10 would've been helpful! But in the grand scheme of building a game in 72 hours, I understand how that could've been a stretch goal.

Awesome entry!!!

Lastly -- and I hate to do this -- but I would really appreciate if you could rate my game (https://ldj.am/$303168). We currently also have less than 20 ratings so any help would be awesome! :)

Haha what a fun concept! Slashing and cooking, absolutely brilliant. Wish the first level started a bit easier with less enemies to deal with, but otherwise really impressive what you delivered!

Graphic design is top notch! Screensavers are generally AAA quality. The idea of fighting and cooking this little fellas is very bloodthirsty :)
So far this is the best entry in this LD for me

What modification did you do since the official jam submission? I see that your upload are from latter on but I can't find your changelog... :(
Is there a way to play the original version?

Not sure if this was a bug or not, but my pan kept cooking immediately as I put one tomato slice on, so I couldn't avoid getting failures.

Other then that I really liked the sound and visual design

@furano At the end of the Jam we have uploaded an intermediate testing build by mistake and we only noticed the mistake later, so we updated it to a correct one. I don't have the old file at hand, but as far as I remember that build had only 8 levels out of 10 and didn't show stats at the end of the level. Also, HTML5 build was done and uploaded to Itch a couple of days later and is mostly identical to the Windows build, except it doesn't have the Quit button in the menu.

@RosyMaple You have to put all the ingredients during the 10s period between cookings. Pan is cooking the dish every 10 seconds and takes whatever was on the pan at the moment of cooking.

Nice fun little game! I liked the idea a lot and it fit the theme well. The graphics were nice, but everything looked like it was plastic, which I don't know if it was an intentional choice or just how it ended up. Either way it did look good and the sounds were funny. I liked that the chefs clothes and ground would turn the color of the stuff you killed though. nice job!

what an interesting mix of genres. Feel like the slashes could use better feedback, but the 10 seconds cooking idea is good :)

Pretty fun. I had a little audio bug whre the sounds and music didn't reset, so it added new and new events until it crashed. Other that that it was a fun little game I didn't get the connection to the theme though.

It was really funny and I liked the humor.
By the way, have you thought about adding some more crazy weapons like grenades or RPG? Since the food is coming to life, the chef should also use some more powerful cooking utensils

@sipfindel Thanks. Cooking happens every 10 seconds. You have to bring all ingredients to the Pan before this 10s timer expires to cook the correct food.

Very well produced game, all the pieces flow into each other very professionally. The general concept is genius, I love the idea of shoveling the remains of enemies into a pan :D Like some others I found the fork to be a bit too unforgiving which made it a bit frustrating to carry the ingredients into the pan. Also I hit a bug where the music would sometimes play doubled on itself. Other than that I didn't have issues, voice acting was a great addition as well! (Also *OY?* y'all based in Finland? :D)

Great grame !! I had lots of fun (and laugh) plpaying this !! Good jobs !

I only had two issues with your game:
* First off the combat are too easy, you can just click on the left mouise button and go rambo and you'll be fine since there are so many health drop.
* I had some audio issues where two tracks were playing at the same time, which lead to ugly and weird audio. Which is a shame because your music and sound Fx are rally good ! And the character voiceover are absolutely marvelous !

A really good entry, congratulation to all of you !

This was really fun!

Aside from the point that my pickup was really glitchy and would fail more often than not.
This made getting the items into the pan in the short time span really difficult. I would be sitting there stabbing at a tomato slice for 5 seconds.

I am the one who finds all the weird bugs though, so it's entirely possible I broke the game. >>;

Overall though this is a really impressive entry! If the way to bring ingredients to the frying pan was fixed, this would be beyond amazing. Thank you. :D

@furano Thanks :) We are working on a fix for the music!

@otterfaelure Yeah, the animation and the collider for picking up have to be fixed. We kinda get used to it during development, but its obvious from comments and streamers that it causes problems. We will fix it!

I was very surprised by the quality of the graphics and animation. The chef's movement was also light, but as far as the fight was concerned, something was just off. In the end, I always ran into the enemy and just slashed around and hoped to survive. Same with impaling their remains. It's hard for me to describe it, but it would definitely be worth improving the controls. Maybe be able to attack from a little more distance, or even defend yourself somehow?

To conclude, I still enjoyed the game and I think the idea is really very original
