Groceries, Please! by Togis

[raw]
made by Togis for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

AN ADRENALINE RUSH PAID HOURLY

As the newest employee in a soul-draining supermarket, your duty is to ring up the massive pile of items that will continue to appear every ten seconds. The customers won't wait for you to catch up. Pick up items and give them a scan to keep things moving along smoothly!

MAYHEM IN AISLE 9

Scan in a variety of items, ranging from collectibles and essentials to blatant developer product advertisements. Shapes and sizes may vary. Big ones take space but small ones give more coins. Think fast and strategize. Deal with overwhelming speed of items entering conveyor belt every 10 seconds, broken barcodes, scanner malfunction and angry customers.

Watch your conveyor belt carefully! If you fail to keep your line moving, you'll be fired on the spot.

I haven't figured out how to scan items, I can rotate them and see the bar code, what's the next step?

@martenscedric When you see a bar code, you can hold down Left Mouse Button to scan the item with the scanner equipped. If it's smudged up, the bar code won't work. We'll update the page real quick to reflect that.

I think it moves a bit too quick. I was also confused that some items don't have codes. Other then that I really found the game fun and the boss kinda funny

Ah, not-so-pleasant memories...

Neat little game! I found it quite difficult at first, but I realize much of it involved memorizing where the barcodes are and building that muscle memory. A softer ramp for newbies would perhaps be nice though.

Not sure if I'm supposed to need to zoom in to see the numbers of not; but they were quite legible in 4k without any additional work.

Rotating items doesnt seem to work. But I can see what youre trying to do here, a very cool idea, and fun graphics and audio. Well done!

Hey @chrisdedev and @thegamearchitect . Thanks for your comments. We will throughly play the game again. Normally we fixed all the bugs and all items should have a code. It might be hiding in a corner somewhere :D
Are you using WASD or arrows thegamearchitect? If yes, it seems that the bug is still alive.

I'm really bad at this game and always get overwhelmed pretty easily, but it's still pretty fun! The scanner feels really good to use.

@fireslash Thanks for checking out the game, and glad you enjoyed it!

I would attribute the bar code clarity to the pixel density. As an LD title this was primarily designed to be played in a small window or web browser embed, and at these resolutions you'll find it very difficult to read the labels without magnification.

Pretty cool game, and a good implementation of the theme. I am not good at this game but it was chaotically fun to try and beat my score a couple of times. Awesome entry!

was really wanting to play this, after having watched the stream during the jam =).
First time playing I got confused if this was a "paper's please" type of experience, where I had to find illegal stuff inside the packages using the xray device ...
then I noticed that was not a xray device lolol

it seems clients were really mad at me
will try in the desktop later so I can get to the leaderboards

Really cool and polished game. My web browsers froze when trying to play, so I cloned the code and it worked well from godot! Very satisfying both to use the magnifying glass and to scan the barcodes!

@bredera Thanks for checking it out!

@velvetlobster Yeah, the angry customers can be a handful. You have a red button you can mash to get the manager and clear the air quickly, but if you ignore it for too long you'll be pressing the button a whole lot. I can neither confirm nor deny the legal status of contents in each scanned item.

Nice idea! I'm not really good at this though, maybe because I play with a touchpad 😅

I've never been fired so much in my life

HTML version indeed doesn't work well - it's quite unplayable on Firefox. So I played the downloadable one, and it worked fine.

Gameplay is nice - gets very hectic and quite fun. You managed to introduce quite the variety of actions here. Great job!

Controls feel strange sometimes - at some points I could click the bin button or the call manager button while still holding the scanner, but at others I counldn't do that, and I had to put down the scanner. I didn't really understand why. I probably wasn't supposed to try to press the buttons while holding the scanner at all

Very well made, lots of funny little detail. I love how chill the music is while the groceries are piling up and I'm freaking out completely :cold_sweat:

I played the web version on firefox and it seemed to run fine.

Wow, I was stressed trying to ring things up fast enough... But good concept execution! There is definitely plenty for the player to do at all times. The game does what it set out to do, and if you like this sort of thing it's got some replay value for the high score. I didn't really get the /feeling/ of anything significant happening every 10 seconds; it just felt like one big flow. So I'd say it was a little weak on the theme, but other than that it was nice!

Haha this game is really addictive I love it! it was a bit difficult to understand how things work at the start but once I understood I had plenty of fun, love the attention to details and how you have to shake the scanner every now and then lol. the moment I saw the two 3d figures I knew it was made by Tobugis! haven't seen you guys in a while (I used to visit your streams like a year ago as "FBI_OFFICIAL_AGENCY" lol). well done!

very enjoyable, I especially loved the angry customer voice! It did take a while for me to get the controls, but I'm very bad at reading so thats mostly on me.

omg the fucking DIRTY CODES

![score.png](///raw/aed/44/z/52986.png)

I like that over time you find little ways to optimize how you use all the different mechanics that are at play here. Cans costing more were a clever difficulty modifier too. Also who puts the codes in different places on the same products? I suppose they're playing a similar game of their own, sticking codes while trying not to get fired T_T

That's a lovely, though a bit stressful game!

Nice game, nice audio and humor. At first I was very confused on how to play, but then I figure it out and I found it really nice. It would be nice if when you needed to type a code, the scanner didn't went to its original position.

Took me a bunch of tries but I made it on the leaderboards! Glad I was able to play properly the second time around xD The gameplay, art, and sound was all really solid and fit together very nicely!
