The Tenth Second Son by Caveman54
The Tenth Second son is a creative interpretation of the Ludum Dare 51 theme "every 10 seconds." Instead of interpreting the theme as something that affects gameplay, we chose a different direction and based the story around the theme (there is also gameplay based on the theme).
Description: Every 10 second-sons are selected for the great coronation. Once 10 second-sons have been born the old feud sparks. A great weight is placed on each of the families to be the first to have a second son early. Every son needs training and experience if they hope to withstand a battle to the death for control over the lands that stretch as far as the eye can see. But you are the last to be born. The tenth second son. The day that you turn 17 is the day of the battle. A great tide has been sweeping the feud as the Raginmars have dominated the last 2 competitions. Their second son, Robell, is 34, with 20 years of combat experience and a medal of honor he is favored to carry the Raginmars to a 3rd victory.
Your family won just 3 short coronations ago. But your win was not through combat but subterfuge. Due to a technicality in the original agreement, if a second son were to leave the arena for ten seconds they immediately forfeit. The families still contest the win, but once taking the position of power the rule was finalized. Now a timer is placed on everyone and if they leave the arena for ten seconds they lose. The Raginmars have won by strength but you might be able to win with technicalities. Can you dethrone Robell and reclaim the crown?
Controls: wasd: Basic movement e: Interact and talk to NPC's to gather information and win your fights. Left click: This is your parry, It's your first method of defeating enemies and a great way to avoid getting hit. Space: This is your dash, use it to avoid enemy attack's and look cool doing it.
Note: if all else fails remember to talk to people, subterfuge is your best friend.

@flying-dog-fish Thank you! We werent big fans of the theme because of that restriction so we tried to come up with something a little more unique.
@jadedresearcher That's disappointing to hear that you weren't able to figure it out but thank you for playing! The music for our games has always been one of the best parts our composer is amazing. The art this time around came from some new artists and we are gonna need to add them to our main team cause it turned out great. Just wish we had them for more time.
@croze I'm glad you liked the graphics! Not sure how far you got but there was an error with the final fights dialogue we fixed. So if you were stuck at Robell that has been fixed.
@jesusonwheels I'm really glad you liked the parry! We spent a lot of time trying to polish it cause we made it so hard to do. I do really like how the effect turned out. If you get a chance to go back and play again that first fight all comes down to the ten seconds part mentioned by Ewel Trye at the beginning. Hopefully that helps!
@thementalsheep Thank you for playing! It's good to hear you enjoyed it.
@cedric86 The parry was a huge focus of ours. We spent a lot of time polishing the feel so I like to see that you had fun with it.
@chartle I am surprised you breezed through combat. Most of our feedback has been the other way. The lag is likely due to a weird bug with how the music loads. It is the same reason our game did not build before. And I am not exactly sure why but we have in our own testing had the parry work but you still take damage. We may need to add some sort of vulnerability frames there? Not really sure that shouldnt happen but you arent the only one.
@platyp For sure! The parry was a big part of it and I think we needed to do a better job of telegraphing that.
@inno Well hey I guess you got it. Not sure I would call it a full rpg but it does seem to have a good amount of content for a jam game. Thanks for playing!
