Gamma Protocol by pianoman373

[raw]
made by pianoman373 for Ludum Dare 51 (COMPO)

Survive waves of enemies on a hostile alien world and contend with random modifiers every 10 seconds. Find new weapons scattered across the map. Watch your stats and try to use the most optimal damage type. How many waves will you survive?

Controls:

Arrow keys to move

X to shoot

Z to change weapons / restart

How to Play:

Survive as long as you can by fighting enemies and exploring the map to find new guns. The three bars on the top represent your stats for each elemental damage. Each gun uses a different damage type so using guns that you have the highest stats for will give you an edge in combat.

I really love your art on this! Also, the auto aim is nice since I have terrible aim. :P

Favorite game that I've played so far. The auto aim is really well done and the game feels nice to play. Awesome job.

Honestly pretty solid game. The visuals and audio is really decent, and I'm always impressed at anything made in PICO-8.

I think you could have made it auto-attack (I just held the fire button down the whole time).
Pretty sweet little shooter, nicely done

Round 20 is my best result so far. Cool little game! Movement debuff is a absolute killer later in the game, I'm losing always because of it. It took me few games to understand stats and changing weapons tho.

i absolutely adore this game. a little biased since i'm a huge fan of pico-8 games, but this was incredible. the auto aim was a super nice touch, and the whole game felt super good to play despite the size. excellent!

Very nice tune and tone, I liked the ten second changes I saw. Nicely done!

Really impressive for a compo game! Fun to play, good audio and music overall, the graphics are easy to read. It took me a few tries to realize I could move with arrow keys but once I did it was a blast!

Dang, you really get thrown right into the action Lol. The game is pretty fun. I really like the auto-lock-on to simplify aiming. The different weapons were pretty cool though some of them seem much weaker than others. The art is cool, and the audio is decent. Overall, a fun entry!

It's good, but some of the random effects seem to make it literally unwinnable (slow made it impossible to escape from an enemy).

@infinitycore @bukkaketears Yeah I unfortunately added in the movement debuff in at the very end and didn't test enough to realize it was a bit too high. 50% is definitely too unforgiving, I wish I set it to something like 75%.

Very cool that auto-lock-on feature! At first I thought I needed to cycle enemies with a button but then I didn't miss it at all.

Very nice graphics and music, game looks and feels very polished overall. The only mystery for me here is why did you decide to add an auto-lock feature in this game.

@lesinvisible The auto lock feature is needed because the engine I used: pico-8 is essentially an emulator for a fake console and uses a controller with only a d-pad and three other buttons on it. Its to keep the games simple and able to be played on any controller. There is still a workaround to access the mouse so I could have done manual mouse targeting as an option but wasn't able to add it in time. I'll probably get around to adding it if I make a post compo version of the game.

Aside from the technical reasons of Pico-8, the autolock feature seems really suitable for this game. Lets me focus on movement and keeping an eye on my stats. The music is kind of a bop, I was really digging it. Fun and fast paced. Perhaps the one criticism I have is that the character can move far to close to the edge of the screen before the camera starts panning, which makes it difficult to know if you're going to run into something. Still, I had a fun time playing this game. Well done!

Die in the round 18.I think auto-lock is necessary, focus on movement is good.I think too many useless weapons is more need to be optimized.

Yeah, the auto lock is great. The stat system is a bit confusing, so I just kept to the singularity gun, which carried me to round 20, until I got the health debuff, and ran into a dog by accident. Overall pretty solid, though as others have mentioned, the camera panning takes a bit too far to the edge to activate, and the speed debuff is brutal. Graphics are great, and the gameplay pretty solid. It's fun.

This was a really engaging tight game! I loved the enemy an weapon variety. One of the best times I've had so far

The music and gameplay is fun. The visuals is also pretty good, but they are also a bit muddy and it is some times a bit difficult to see what was happening. But anyway is this overall a good and well made compo game. Well done.

frantic 2d shooter. Auto aim is a perfect design trait, as it enables to focus on strategic planning instead of grinding the aiming skillset

Pretty amazing game, its overall fun to play, it can be a bit annoying when enemies spawn a bit too close to you, and your screen is rather small so its sometimes hard to react, but besides that the gameplay is fitting with the time and enjoyable. the artstyle and sound are also quite nice, and the game overall feels quite polished, despite being simple.

very fun game. The different effects every 10 seconds kept the gameplay fun and engaging. I was also a bit confused about the stat system so an instructions menu would've been great but otherwise a fun little game.

Hell yes. Very fun! Love the graphics and the gameplay, very cool idea and a good interpretation of the theme. SFX spot on, music was cool.

Neat game, though enemies feel like they can spawn too close to you and make you lose health in an unfair way. Everything else is very good.

This was *really* neat! It's quite a simple game (still super fun), but the charming graphics and SFX really elevated the experience! I only made it to round 19, though I would enjoy playing for longer to improve that ()! Because of the game it is, you were really able to polish it up in a way that works super well; I loved playing through it!

Overall, this is a great submission; keep it up!

I managed to survive 15 waves. Really liked this, I almost always love PICO-8 games though =). Auto-aim worked great, graphics and sound also great. Only thing I'd like improved was I often didn't see what was off of the screen in the direction I wav moving and ran into some enemies or got stuck somewhere and died quite quickly ^_^.

Nice game! I got to round 26. It was good to see the variety in the guns, and that the chests still had some value once all the guns were collected.

In my first game I got the Zeus 9000 and a Marine rifle in the first chest: it felt a bit OP because I could mash Z (weapon swap) to get the big Zeus bullets all the time. Maybe the cooldown should be maintained for each gun instead of resetting on weapon swap :)

The auto-lock was appreciated towards the end. But the gameplay also got a bit less interesting: hold down X with whichever gun selected, run away. I guess this wouldn't work indefinitely because the player is bound to make a mistake and I'm guessing the monsters do eventually overwhelm the player, but still, the beginning of the game was more interesting. Maybe more variations should be introduced later on.

I wasn't sure about the camera system. I guess not scrolling the camera unless the player is near the edge of the screen is good to reduce motion sickness? Still, at first I didn't realise just how much I could explore, later on I didn't like the system because moving towards the edges was dangerous: I couldn't see what I was walking towards. Maybe it would be enough to make the zone where the camera does not move smaller?

holy cr*p that was fun! Definitely my favourite wave shooter of the jam hands down. I love the autoaim mechanic. A surprisingly high number of guns that all felt good for such a short time! And enough enemy variance to keep it interesting, introduced at a good pace to slowly learn their behaviours and general health levels. Only nitpick was the camera was a little wonky at times, focusing on where i was coming from not where i was going, so i almost ran headfirst into some monsters quite a few times. Love this entry a lot though
