Goop the Lab! by Adam Gallina

[raw]
made by Adam Gallina for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

Gameplay: A platformer where you explore a lab, collecting coins and upgrades to eventually escape, but be careful not to let the alarm go off...

Controls: - Move: WASD - Jump: Space - Use: E - Shoot: L. Click

NOTE: there is supposed to be a timer/UI elements at the top of the screen, but for some reason it gets cut off in the window. If you scroll down in the embed, you can go into full screen where it should be visible

edit: Fixed a bug where jump height did not change when upgraded

I didn't expect myself to finish this, it was challenging but fair! I got a little further every time which led to me wanting to try again until I eventually beat it!
The controls are a bit unfair at times but once you get used to it it's good! I liked the atmosphere of the game, and getting a new ability felt really fun. Overall a really nice entry! :D

Very good concept of die and retry. I finished it but it was challenging. I like the new features of gameplay that are introduce all along the game. Jumping and taking damage at the same time allow to hight jump, it helps me a lot :)
Great job !

@pattedecanaard, I thought about fixing the damage jumps but it was kind of fun to play around with, glad you had fun with it lol :)

Pretty good game. I've played it for a while and finally escaped. Sometimes on the edge of some block it just didn't jump and it was really stressful... or it was only ME problem... dunno

I finished the game, it was kinda of great! The level design is surprisngly smart and effecient, so you get to pull off cool stuff after you get all your powers. Really well done on the level design!

Backseat developing - It feels like the progression is too fast, you get everything really quickly. Maybe think about "slots" so that you can equip only so-many abilities and upgrades per try? That would also fit (except when it doesn't) your great level.

Good job!

Very fun to play ! Love the gameplay loop, it make me want to retry as soon i as die ! (Just one note : it will be even better with a timer showing time left before lazer )

Yeah @tess, the way I have the colliders set up caused that to open on later jumps, and I didn't get a chance to fix it - glad you could still finish it though!
@roroto-sic there is actually a timer that you can see, for some reason the embed hides the top eighth of the screen and you can't see it without going into fullscreen :(
@elros Glad you liked the level design! I also would have preferred to spread out the level progression a bit, and make you need all of the upgrades to actually reach the lever, but I had to focus on other development and didn't get to improve the level much once it was implemented

This game was fantastic! I loved the way it's eyes followed my mouse around. Also, you designed it very well to have the perfect amount of risk and reward and gradual progression!

Nice entry, i managed to escape in 10 minutes. Like the progression you've built. Its like roguelike but within one level. I missed some sort of timer or markers that could indicate when the loop will end, but at the 10's route i handle with it.

Such a great game. Just like I like. Very addictive. Slow and frustating beginning but it's kind of the gameplay of course :P. Really nice game. Remind me a bit of "clicks games". Great job!

I did not expect to find such a polished game with upgrades, etc.. This was very well done and I would not have assumed it was a jam game made in just three days if I did not know it was a jam submission. My one question is what is the purpose of the "Take more hits" upgrade? When the lasers turn on, the slime just gets bounced into the next laser and there isn't really anywhere I can move in between. Is it more like extra lives for landing on spikes and getting hit by the laser when near a delay button?

Surprisingly deep design under the guise of a simple upgrade centric platformer! New abilities are introduced just at the right rate to keep it interesting and I really like that you can upgrade them. The way health is handled is genius, in addition to allowing for small mistakes it also gives you a bit longer time and sometimes it's useful for intentionally taking damage for faster movement. Only problem I can say is that I couldn't tell the difference between background and foreground (but later understood those to be vents, a hard problem to solve to make them look like you can pass through them but still interactable...).

I loved the metroid-vania aspects with how each time you play you make more and more progress. Good pacing as well.

at first i was like:" this is a bit slow for a platformer?" and then i got killed by lasers and i could upgrade and it all clicked. Surprisingly well polished game and a great entry for ludumdare. Good job!

A very well made and fun little platformer. The upgrade system is good and very well balanced. I like the visuals and the music. I did never escape, but that is not your games issue, but it was because of my pure abilities to play platform games. Overall a really good jam game.

Fun game! Reminds me of a lot of those classic upgrade flash games. I like the variety of powerups
