The Lamplighter by SelkieHarbour

[raw]
made by SelkieHarbour for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

After a fierce blizzard snuffed out all the lights on the path between two towns, the Lamplighter must travel through the snowy forest to relight all the lanterns and protect the towns. Use your torch to light the way and keep yourself safe. Be careful to stay on your guard though, tales have been told about creatures lurking in the shadows after dark...

That's a cool entry! Nice mood, really liked the whole dark ambience. Lighting up your lantern can get quite stressfull when monsters are approaching ahah. Thanks for adding checkpoints, it really helps!

That's a very good game, I admit I died 2 or 3 times and pressure from enemies makes the game quite stressful, gg!

Cool, moody game. The eyes really stick out from the darkness.
I had a slight difficulty understanding how to light the lamps so I skipped the first few and then got stuck in a long path, which seemed nearly impossible to cross with light. I'd say outlining the charge wheel would make it a lot more visible against the snow.

Nice entry!

Cool winter mood. And I'm glad to see a game with an idea similar to ours =)

I like the mood of the game. It's a cool idea having a lantern on a timer and using it to light up the path. The atmosphere has good storytelling, but the gameplay is a little repetitive and overall pretty easy.

Very cool game idea! We also made a game that experiments with light every 10 seconds, we'd love for you to check it out! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/stormlight-manor

Definitely great for the mood. The distance on interacting with enemies and lamps felt right. The lamp seemed a bit hard to crank up; I felt like I shouldn't be having to spam quite as hard to get it going.

Even without music there's a good feel to it with the environment sounds. Pretty simple overall but executed well!

I love this game. As in if this got expanded to have a story element to it I would be wishlisting it on Steam, 100%.

The atmosphere was perfect, the lack of horrific monsters in the horror element allowed for the quiet storm feeling instead of the oh my god why did I play this feeling.

I don't really have any feedback to give to improve, to be honest.
I just want more.

Please let me know if you do develop this game further.

Enjoyed playing through, the atmosphere was great, felt risky to push on to the next lantern when the torch was about to run out.

If I had to ask for one thing, it would only be to be able to hold the torch crank button down, not only repeatedly press it

Really Loved the idea, had a hard time with the product. The difficulty is pretty unbalanced (for me) and the candle working as a dynamo-lamp was quite unintuitive. Still, if you were only two, it's a pretty a good entry! GG

The atmosphere is really good :D

Feedbacks :
- colorblind mode isn't really good (but hopefully we don't need it for the game)
- no sounds on my computer (I saw an AMD warning)
- too much text on main screen

Wow, this is probably the best LD51 game I've played so far! The theme is used really well, and the difficulty balancing is just right. The visual style is very good too, I could easily see myself playing this as a 2-3 hour game with some story beats in between. Well-implemented too, I didn't encounter any bugs or problems.

Incredible across the board. I love the art and animation. The lighting and the enemies were so creepy. The sound effect of the wind and the cranking of the light were perfect. Simple but extremely clever and beautifully executed. Fantastic job!

Concept is simple yet very effective !
The Art is also really sweet ! Not gonna lie, I'm a sucker for snowy environments...
The light going off every 10 seconds is a cool idea, and adds to the overall feeling of the game !
This being said, the QWERTY controls made it a bit challenging for me, as I'm using an AZERTY keyboard...
Anyways, great game ! You did a nice job~

Thank you all for the feedback, really appreciated!

@lejocarry I'm curious about the colorblind mode. I'm not color blind and we implemented the colorblind features that the engine has, which I thought were the standard. Could you point me in the right direction to know what's wrong about it?

Sorry for the lack of support for AZERTY keyboards @lydhros @jeanne-rossat I know it's a bit late but the game has gamepad support, I'll write that down in the description page as well

Cool thing was the colourblind mode and actually to see what the right option is! I got the red-green-thingy and always forget what it is properly called (actually doesn't bother me too much - only in a few cirumstances). First I was confused what I was supposed to do. Know the keys but didn't now to spam it! Walked pass the first obstacles by walking through the forest nearest to my point of view. Liked the idea much! And was actually scared sometimes and needed to strategize and think ahead. Really cool! The Atmosphere was great!

Wow what a nice graphics! love it, really moody, I got scared with the eyes stocking, I find it a little hard in some point of the journey to reach the next lamp and in a couple of places the cam traspass the mountains but nothing to break the experience that was great, the player movement and the mechanics are very good, sorry my english, thanks for that journey, I enjoy it, great work!

Amazing mood and graphics! The way it fits with the theme is Very unique and the gameplay is quite enjoyable. I think the game was quite hard but the safe point made up for it in a nice way so it felt challenging but not punishing. Great Work!

The graphics and ambiance of the game really are beautiful. That's a very nice entry here. The game is short, but the the overall mood and idea could fit nicely into a bigger game with some additional scenario and secrets to uncover.
