Sprint10 by Ben Parisi

[raw]
made by Ben Parisi for Ludum Dare 51 (COMPO)

My first Compo Entry! :)

Get to the exit. Levels are ten seconds long. Waddaya want from me? It's a video game ain't it?

POST RELEASE PATCH NOTES: You no longer restart the game after dying three times. You now have unlimited lives.

It's funny how designers become nose blind to how difficult their game is. In the hour before I released, I worried that I did not have enough content, so I added in the lives feature to sort of "stretch out" the gameplay. This was clearly a mistake. Nobody can beat the game now. I want people to be able to experience the later levels.

This is fun! I like the level design and the aesthetic. It's definitely hard; the challenge is fun, but I wish I had more lives (or could get more). Great job overall!

Very good actually! I really like some challanges and some sort of puzzleness in the game. Camera is a little confusing and speed really can make some troubles. But I liked this a lot. I think it can be very good as a full game.

Awesome, so much fun! Super tight level design, that sprint at the third checkpoint was super well timed. Black walls dont respawn when you get a gameover so i kinda softlocked myself from crossing that chasm, but that kinda stuff is expected in a jam! Super duper fun and felt and looked great, and thats the important thing

I'm pleasantly surprised by this! Really making me sweat every 10 seconds! This checkpoint/10 second system manages interest curve so well, make me yearn for that sub second finishes. Wish the difficulty curve was a little more gentle, so I feel like a bad ass robot ninja for longer. But really great job!

I love the concept and I'm always tickled by a Naruto run.

The graphics were super cool, but there were points when it was hard to see where I was going.

I don't think the lives thing added any stakes for a game like this; it was tedious to go back and restart the 'tutorial' levels and I would have tried that craggy wall 100 times before I got it.

Otherwise great first entry!

The graphics are AMAZING. Love that aesthetic and it just really calls back to some early 3d games with a modern coat of paint. Liked how tightly it was tuned, though some of the platforms were a bit hard to stay on with the controls being so snappy. Overall really really fun, thanks for a great experience!

Loved the graphics and aesthetic of the game!
Controls were fast, so made it hard sometimes to hit the finish line.
Got stuck on the vertical stair case, but seems really fun!

Very cool! I love a good crash-style platformer. It's really fun, but pretty hard - I agree with others above that the lives system is a little discouraging. I do like how the whole game is one big level though. Can we get gamepad support??

The level design is actually really really great. The controls are a bit stiff maybe, and I really would have liked to have seen the rest of the levels. I made it almost to the end of the part where you are out in the open but the stages are very unforgiving for a lives system like this. Also, what's up with only WASD? I'm not using my right hand to shoot anything or look around so I would have like to use arrow keys.

More nitpicks because this game is great: After I grab a checkpoint, I'd like the game to remember that I'm holding down forward without having to repress it.

I really liked the game, very creative, it matched the theme a lot. So far this is the best I've played so far I hope you win!

Very cool game, very fast, very enjoyable and with a bit of a challenge. I finally passed.
Although the keyboard control is not smooth enough, you can't rush all the way to the end, you need to control the speed, which makes it a little awkward, but it is still a good game. Good work!

The TRON like art style is quite intriguing and I also like the heart beat the world seems to have.
I like that you show how much time you had left after reaching a check point.
A tiny bit of time after falling off a platform that still lets you jump would be nice.

The idea is fun and the music/sound effects is good. The visuals is pretty good, but while running around it is a bit nauseating. The controls is okay, but it could have used a more fine tuning. Overall is this a good compo game.

I _love_ the aesthetics of this game. It's super juicy, but in a charming and quirky way that I really enjoyed. The graphics, sound and especially the animation really gave it it a unique character.

The gameplay was tight and fun. The 10 second levels were a great idea, and keeping it as one consecutive world worked really well.
Removing the lives was a good idea, by the way. I found the platforming quite challenging (but enjoyable)! And I think having to restart would have been frustrating.

Oh, It might be worth mentioning that I couldn't get the game to run on firefox. It was just stuck on the unity loading screen forever. It worked well on chrome though

Pretty cool. Nice aesthetic and a concrete platformer. Very well done on getting the game physics to play nicely on this one. Handful of thoughts to pass along.

- Volume envelope on the jumping sound effect in particular needs to come way down. Had to turn the volume low enough that I wasn't able to enjoy the music while playing. Sad.
- I like the view distortion, but it really gets in the way of the horizontal and vertical portions of the game. If you weren't already considering it, maybe a small delay so it doesn't kick in on the sections where you have to tap forward briefly?
- Pretty sure I was running on air (above the platforms) at the end of the game. Not sure if intentional.

Nice game. I like the maze runner take. Great job using the theme. I'm glad I get to restart when I died because I kept getting stuck on a few levels.

The movement in this game felt fantastic, very polished and fun gameplay. I also liked the TRON-styled pseudo retro graphics.

Very fun game! I like how each level continues from the last in one giant map, and the introduction of the wall-jump tiles then breakable tiles was great, each section feels like it builds from the last. Also shoutout to that dance animation at the end, they're certainly groovin. Not much else to say- simple but well made! Nice work!

The theme and visuals are incredible! Really challenging level designs too! Though when the character is on the edge (not falling) it cannot jump, which is frustrating somehow! I believe this is a bug. But really enjoyed your game! Nice job!

The sense of speed is strong, you nailed the visual style and variety of obstacles! The last few stages were really satisfying to beat.

Reading the depth of some parts can be pretty challenging, but the game is a visual treat regardless and feels super nice to play. Good work! I think having more colours in the floor tiles to make it easier to parse the environments would be a good, fairly low cost way to make it easier to see where you're going.

WOW that was fun as hell, great entry!! I almost didn't play this because it wouldn't work in firefox, but it just looked so cool so I went through the trouble of installing Chrome just to try this, and I'm glad I did.

Everything from the level design, to the breaking glass sound effect, to the praise the sun death animation is excellent.

Also, I definitely appreciate the checkpoint system since having to restart from the beginning on each death would have made this impossible to play.

Fun game and interesting visual style.

Sometimes it's a bit hard to see where the player should go, especially when the player is going left or right. This seems to be due to a combination of the camera positioning and the platforms not being visually distinct.
