Distracted Driver by organicpencil

[raw]
made by organicpencil for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

Randomized time-trial with a distracting twist.

Uhh... on the web version, don't click "Exit program". That's not supposed to be there.

Notes: - It doesn't seem to work in Chrome using LD's embedding, but it does work on itch. I've included a link below. - The car sprites, phone, and sounds are CC0 assets, so I opted out of those categories

This was a bunch of fun! The messages also had a great sense of humor. It was a very enjoyable short experience. Simple yet so efficient. I think this concept is unique and you executed it well. So good job! o(≧∀≦)o

Haha a very fun and funny game! The first moment when as silly text comes in, then you look up and the road is just covered in carnage - loved it. Good choice of art and audio assets, and appreciate the slightly different take on driving mechanics, a small refreshing twist. Good work!

I don't know how you designed the Ai of other cars and deers but man it feels alive! really well done
also, I don't know why but the web build doesn't seem to work

@0x-void-x0 I was able to replicate an issue in Chrome and have added a compatibility note. Thanks for playing!

Racing through a busy road is pretty fun lol, good job on that :) I think the right and left steering is a little too sharp (at least at higher speeds), but everything otherwise works well. The random texts are cool too.

Here's how I did:

120 dents in 120 seconds! I like that all the cars and trucks kept piling up and didn't just disappear off-screen. Audio was fun and I enjoyed myself.

Hearing the truck horn followed by several dozen collisions noises while you can't see the screen after you left off with everything fine is indescribably funny. Very nice touch including the average collision statistics.

2019 US average collisions: 45
Me: 300

I really liked the idea and the graphics but the game would benefit from having a bit less cars in it. It currently lives from the idea and the message :D

VICTORY: Your ambiguous destination has been reached!

What a delightful, absurd clusterfuck this game is. I was grinning the whole time. The text messages were hilarious and added a lot to the atmosphere. I just wish I had a little more time to read them!

Could you explain the "2019 US national average" thing? Why does it always go up at a constant rate? Assuming this game takes place in 2022, how is the 2019 national average changing?

I really love this entry, excellent work :)

@iamsodarncool Glad you liked it! This whole process has been a blast. I gotta start doing more game jams...

On the national average thing: It's a silly reference point. I pulled up stats for real-world traffic collisions in 2019 (that was the newest I could find), computed the average per second, and threw that on a counter.

Made it with only 107 dents. Loved the random text messages I got along the way and also the crazy taxi drivers who cut me off a few times only to demolish a deer or another car right infront of me :D

This was great fun! A really neat idea. I loved how it gradually got more absurd with the vehicle pileups, offroading lorries and flying deer. I thought I was going to get in trouble for hitting a cop car until they started joining the clusterfuck as well
My main critique: the steering controls were a bit tricky - it's very easy to overshoot changing direction and once I started swerving it got tricky to get back on the road and driving straight again.
Overall very enjoyable though. Audio assets were used really well (hearing a trunk horn blaring but not being able to see it barrel towards me because I'm reading a text message? Terrifying and hilarious), and I like that extra touch of seeing the foot on the pedal as I accelerate. Great job!

This game is really fun! Don't text while driving! Love the sprites and the sound effects and the total chaos on the street. :)

Hilarious game :) I liked how the road is completely chaotic even without the distractions!
I tried to read the text messages anyway but didn't have enough time for it. They probably tell a funny story too!

Funny concept and execution.

I think some mandatory interaction with the phone would make it even better and accurate, as right now I can just keep looking at the blurred road to avoid collisions so I'm not distracted enough.

This could be fixed by having the phone stay on screen until you do something with it like swipe away a notification, delete spam message, turn down a caller, kill an alarm or win a game about driving ;)

FYI you can check [OS.get_name()](https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/classes/class_os.html#class-os-method-get-name) to see what platform your game runs on in case you wanted to hide the `Exit Program` button for the web player.

Anyways, we had a good laugh with this one, thanks!

@fax I like to pretend they were all on their phones too. It's good cover for the poorly-written AI.

@unless-games "swipe away a notification": That's a really good idea... And thanks for the tip about OS.get_name(), I totally forgot about that. Reckon I'll push a small update sometime after all the ratings are done.

Okay played on itch and.. WHAT THE HELL :joy:
Guess none of the drivers actually ever looked at the road :joy:

Was definitely a funny break filler :D
