The Internship by MrBamboo

[raw]
made by MrBamboo for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

Instructions

5 minutes left before the end of the day ! It's the end of your internship, after that you'll be hired ! The boss ask you for a coffee every 10 seconds and you need to give him fast otherwise he will get more and more angry. Try to not get fired if you want the job !

Controls

  • WASD/Arrows to move
  • E for action (get/give coffee)
  • Avoid obstacles
  • Survive 5 minutes. You will be fired if the boss gets too angry.

Insights from development

The team was split across the globe. 3D artists were from France and Belgium. Developers and 2D artist from Canada (Québec).

At the beginning of the brainstorm, the idea was that someone ask for things every 10 seconds. After few minutes "someone" became a boss and the hero an intern. Léonard (3D artist) suggests that we use the TV show "The Office" as a source of inspiration.

When we start to think what the boss could ask for :

  • Answer the phone
  • Get packages at the door
  • Prepare documents (computer)
  • Do photocopies
  • Bring coffee

We started by programming the coffee machine because we found this one funny ... a boss drinking coffee every 10 seconds.

24 hours after the begining of GameJam, we finished our MVP version of the game. Instead of adding more game mecanics, we decided to put more love in the design and details (For example putting a paper plane flying around in the office)

Elise and Léo did an awesome job ! The office was fully placed and a lot of assets were usable (without textures). Table, chairs, computer chairs, computers, coffee machine, fridge, closets, phones and printers.

Zackary designed many things that help to have a better comprehension of what's happening with the boss : icons, textures for particle system in the AngryBar, image of the boss asking coffee or being happy, game logo, etc.

Few hours before the end of the GameJam, Raphaël though it could be nice to have an ending condition (winning or losing). So he start working with Zack on a tutorial when the game starts while Nicolas work on a camera system to have a "end game screen".

Loosing: Camera with the boss in his office with the mention: "You're fired!"

Winning: Camera on the paper plane with the mention: "You're hired!".

1 or 2 hours before the end, the 3d team finish texturing, decorating putting lighting into the final released scene. It was really helpful that they were autonomous in Unity.

Finally, it was an awesome GameJam, we loved to work on that game and we hope you'll have pleasure to play our game. Don't hesitate to give us comments and feedback !

Great work!!! Very good graphics, 3D models, scene... Lots of details... Easy to play. The main menu shows the text in French but the rest of the game in English. Good job!

What an awesome looking game and fun to play! Would love to see a hint or little tutorial to show you where to make coffee and find your boss as I did get a little lost in the beginning, but awesome work!! :D

Nice game! Loved the art style and the general feel of the office. Little details like the paper plane really make it come m ore alive :)

Unfortunately I got fired, because I was too busy checking out the office haha

Seemed punishing until boss was cornered close to the coffee. Should the 10 second penalty occur if you gave coffee during the previous 10 seconds? Maybe he's just that angry of a boss?

Reward screen was simple but top notch.

Great work on the sound and art! The office was charming, and I loved watching the little characters doing their thing. While I can understand the decision to pivot away from gameplay variety in favor of putting more love into the environment and details (love the paper air plane camera!), I do wish there could have been more opportunities to interact with the other parts of the office/other characters. Nonetheless, it was fun to explore and gave me some good laughs!

Very nice! I like the artstyle a lot. Great office feel.

Found a minor bug: If you get hired and leave the paper plane screen going for a while, the note eventually changes to "You're fired!".

*Don't even TALK to me until I've had my coffee!*

I've enjoyed the hell out of the opportunity to strut around The Office, it's so endearing! The set is recreated with awesome attention to detail, and it's a pleasure to look at.

I would love to see more variety in terms of tasks to perform: every task from your list would make a good activity in my opinion, and would add diversity to the process. But in the end I did get hired and got to fly the paper airplane, yay! My only concern is that they'll give me a workplace in Ryan's closet :(

The level design is on fire!
This game was really really well designed and everything was incredibly smooth... aside from me dropping a ton of coffees in areas where I couldn't see the boss as he walked around.
I also found it amusing because to me the boss looks like that guy from that motorcycle show (my partner said Orange County Choppers so maybe that's it?).

My main critique though would be making the game last 5 minutes for a win. With only one thing to do it gets redundant fairly fast and my initial impression was "5 minutes is a loooong time to do one thing".

That being said, I didn't really feel the time until probably three and a half minutes in, which is about twice as long as I expected to be able to last so very very well done. :D

Simple and fun game. I played for quite a bit just to keep the boss happy and so I could explore more of the office. I love the references to The Office.

@not-tomo soooo true ! We had plenty of ideas for interacting with the environment but we decided that for a gamejam (limited time) we should keep it simple. The initial idea was to make the boss for various things as:
- Printing documents
- Anwser the phone
- Get a package at the door
- Sent email to the computer
- and ... coffee of course

You've created a really nice office microcosm here, nice job!

Couple small bugs to highlight. The game failed to load in Brave, but was fine in Firefox. It also seems that diagonal movement is faster than going purely up/down/left/right, are directional velocities being combined?

Great game in all!

09. Oct 2022 · 18:12 UTC
The art and scene design here is top notch, though I think the game mechanics could use a bit of expansion. Also, giving the boss coffee doesn't seem to reset the anger timer, it just gives points that can counteract the negative - guy has a real issue.

@matt-ravenhall never try on any browser. It's all done and compiled with Unity WebGl. So if the browser don't support WebGL ... I can't help ;)

The diagonal do make you move on X and Z axis simultaniously, but a constant speed in both axis.

I really like the aesthetics of the game. From colors and shapes to perspective. Everything looks really nice! It's a pleasure to look at. All the little details bring place to live. However, I found gameplay boring. It's same thing over and over with little to no variation. I've read the description and I see now, that you wanted to focus more on the environment, and you totally succeeded there. It's a nice cozy place!

Really loved the art style. The concept of the game was really funny, I ended up blocking the boss near the coffee machine so I could more easily bring it to him. I also loved having to locate the boss, it made me just think of how the boss just goes wherever he wants so you have to find him to bring him coffee. That made the game much more interesting rather than just go back and forth between his desk. I wish the other employees who blocked the way would sometime move so it would open up another path. Overall, I had a lot of fun, great job!

Incredible art, fun concept, and the character was smooth to control. Being able to push chairs around was weirdly fun.

I had trouble at first figuring out where the coffee machine and the boss were, and I didn't realize you would drop the coffee if you pressed E while not standing next to the boss, so I dropped a few cups without realizing it at first.

I appreciated how certain paths would get randomly blocked off, forcing you to find another way through, and would have appreciated a lot more stuff like that in the game. Right now the game is pretty trivial to beat if you just get coffee as fast as you can.

You've done an awesome job here! The graphics are adorable, the gameplay is very straightforward but still ends up being a frantic effort to bring the boss his coffee. The number of times I'd almost got his anger bar down to zero, only to accidentally drop the coffee on the floor in front of him  Excellent work!

Amazing game. Really catchy graphics. Some work can be done from the gameplay side and can be a made a bit more complex. I think the 10 second rule did redistricted a lot of possibilities. Please do check out my submission as well.

10. Oct 2022 · 14:06 UTC
Once you know what to do it becomes a bit repetitive, especially for five minutes. Sometimes the "boss" just ran into a corner and stood there. That made it too easy to find him. A bit more interaction with the environment could have been interesting (as others have mentioned). The movement feels a bit too slow for my taste. Otherwise the game looks fantastic for a jam submission and plays well without any major issues. Good work!

Very well conceived, and of course amazing graphics and implementation. I like the murmur of the angry boss, the snapping chairs and paperplane. I could easily see this as something to be expanded on. More actions from the other employees, sabotage, favors etc.

I was amazed by the 3D modeling! It is obvious where you drew the inspiration from for the office layout and some of the characters! Well done!

The gameplay itself was a bit simple - I managed to get hired, but the coffee task gets a bit old before the 5 minutes are up.

What a beautiful looking game! I got a little confused in the beginning what to do but managed to get back on track before getting fired. Apart from that and the game becoming a little repetitive, I still had a lot of fun while playing due to the detailed and lively looking office. Maybe you could add a twist, to make it more intricate. I'd love to see more!

Great job! I loved the 3D models, it was fun just to watch the player jiggle when moving around
To make it less repetitive I would suggest adding an extra mechanic, like trying not to spill the coffee. I also think it would be fun to spawn more employees in the office periodically, it would make it harder to reach the boss and add a bit of progression.

Fun fact: we also did a game about getting fired from your job for this jam, but with a very different perspective

Ah yes the GameJam my favourite game jam. 5 minutes of pathing form one point to another, one if which does not even move, not very engaging gameplay, plus making a bot to do the same task would take less time.

Pretty decent tutorial for a GameJam game. Nice modeling and environmental storytelling in the level. Good work.

@jesusonwheels thanks for playing ! One of the try I did was to put all chairs near the printer to block the boss path.

@sailors yeah for sure ! 10 secs isn't long enought. I think the theme make us "obliged" to make it angry every 10 secs haha.

But an idea we got, was to make the boss timer reset and stop when he drink coffee. And then when he ask for it having 10 secs to give him. So after the boss get his coffee, you'll have more time to do somthing else. We tough we could make the coffee brewing process more complex like: get watter, grind beans, brew coffee, etc.

Thanks for your feedback !
