Honk Hard is a top-down, twin-stick shooter, roguelike-inspired game with a sprinkle of bullet hell, where you’ll collect new weapons and boost your abilities. Play as famous 80s action hero, Goose Willis, in his quest to stop Dr. Vernon Vermin in his track to conquer the world with the help of his evil autonomous army of Robomice. Fend off wave after wave of ruthless machines and progress through the halls of Dr. Vermin's secret underground facility.

Controls:

WASD or Arrow Keys to move Hold RMB to activate bullet time Press LBM to fire your weapon Press SPACE while holding a direction key to dash in that direction

Game Mechanics:

Dash and Bullet Time:

Goose Willis has two potent abilities in his arsenal. He can quickly dash to change his position, and as a bird with incredible commitment and iron focus, he can slow down time for ten seconds to predict enemies' moves and get out of the toughest of situations. To refill his determination to slow some more, the player will have to finish off enemies with the dash ability. Just deal enough damage to the enemy to trigger their self-destruct sequence, and when you see them blinking, dash into them, destroying them on the spot and refilling that precious determination juice.

Weapon Upgrades:

Scattered throughout Dr. Vermin's secret facility are special weapon components that when picked up*, can modify Goose's favorite weapon. They can increase bullet speed, the number of bullets the weapon can shoot at once, or even change the properties of those bullets. We don’t want to spoil all the fun for you so we won’t say more.

Ability Boosts:

Similar to weapon components, these modes boost Goose’s performance. From healthy and toxic-looking vitamin shots to winged boots and so on. But choose wisely which one you’ll pick as the rest will perish when you make up your mind.*

*IMPORTANT INFO

All upgrades come in pairs of two. One pair of ability boosts and one pair of weapon components. You can only pick one of each pair, and when you do, the other will be destroyed and become unobtainable for the rest of the game.

@mypalmike Hi o/. We're so sorry about the issue. We didn't notice that our final update didn't properly get uploaded to itch.io. We fixed our mistake and link works again. We hope you give us a second chance ;).

Pixel art is executed pretty well, and the concept is goofy. I think bullet time was my favorite mechanic, personally it would have been cool to see it recharge some on the 10 second timer to encourage use.

I was unable to find the secret weapon :(

Love the visuals, great graphics and the upgrades are just my style. Fun play, was slightly difficult, but that could just be skill issue on my part.

Cool! Amazing how much you were able to do in such a short time! The graphics and animations of both the main character and the enemies looked really nice. Something that would improve this game a lot is probably more feedback in terms of sound, animations or visual effects when shooting and hitting enemies. For example a hurt animation when enemies are hit. Overall great job! MELON MELON MELON.

Cool entry and a fun hidden message. The game played well though the sound was a little delayed and didn't start right away. Loved the graphics, congrats on the entry!

Ooooh my god! What nice pixels! The music is also pretty cool. I just gave you... a lot of stars. Did you two did this really all by yourself in three days? Amazing! :v: I am also someone who likes to work with pixels... even if you don't see it in my game. We should connect. DM me on insta @chiller.typ

This game lives up to its name: hard. It's easy to learn the basics but the difficulty ramps too steep in just couple stages.
Fun shooter nonetheless. I might need to give another go sometimes.

This game has so much going for it: the art, the gameplay, the puns, the MELON, the soundtrack. I think some feedback when the player gets hit would be super helpful, some audio and/or visual cues. Also, an on screen visual of the upgrades you selected would be nice to have, just to keep track of what worked or didn't work for me on my last run. Overall, fantastic entry!

Real MELON, i love the artstyle, and the whole lore, i think the game would feel way better with some sound effects, even basic ones, as shooting kinda lacks juice for my taste, i also feel like the base player movement speed could use an increase, i know there are upgrades, but i the base movespeed doesn't feel good imo, but overall really solid entry
