[raw]
made by dnivie for Ludum Dare 51 (COMPO)

Survive for as many waves as you can

(Download for best performance, if you use the web-player you might not see the HP bar unless you fullscreen it)

Controls:

WASD - Move

Left Shift - Sprint

Space - Jumpo

LMB - Shoot

R - Reload

Instructions:

If you don't mind being a bit confused at first, you should just try the game. Might take a few restarts to get the hang of it.

Otherwise: The red wall deals damage, run away from it. Every 10 seconds, you pick one of three options, you only have 10 seconds to pick one. Enemies are out to hurt you, pick up medkits and ammo boxes to replenish your life and ammo.

Note:

There's no audio, so don't worry about turning up your sound.

The upgrades are not weighted whatsoever, so if you're really unlucky it will be impossible, and if you're really lucky, it'll be way too easy. If the run is boring or bad, just run at the big red wall, and restart.

You can press T to toggle a debug print of most (not all) of your current upgrades/mods. This debug looks best(bad) at 1920x1080, and will probably be unreadable at most other resolutions.

Ramblings:

Can you notice the bulletholes? I spent a good hour or two adding them, and turns out they don't add much to the experience.

Can you outrun the wall? It does it's best to keep up with you, so I'd be surprised if you managed to.

I thought at first, well this is easy I can just avoid the bowling balls. Then I turned around. :joy: Was their audio and I had a bug? I didn't rate it since I heard nothing, maybe opt out! I would have liked for the pistol to auto reload when empty for a smoother gameplay experience.

Sorry, there's no audio! I had planned to (even recorded sounds for most actions), but I left it for the end and didn't manage to create all of the sounds in time. I figured it would be a bit more jarring if only a few things had sound effects, so I left it out alltogether.

Cool concept! and ditto the above ^ the bowling balls chasing you was a pretty cool moment! And yea sound effects will help a lot. I didn't even realize I was taking damage at a few spots. Also want to see more varied obstacles! Also I wonder if the rogue-like choice box is popping up too often which breaks up the pace of the game a bit (maybe every other round would feel better?). Also big congrats on finishing your first compo LDJam!

The game was way to easy, but after a while, it became more about how ridiculous fast and high-jumping can I make my character. The last half of the game I did not shoot or slice a single enemy.

I had fun playing it, thanks for making it.

The idea is pretty good and I had fun trying the game. It gets a bit annoying with all the upgrades, but the idea is fun. Overall a game that might have needed a bit more to time to be made, but okay that is not that unusual for a compo game.

Cool concept - and like other commenters, I thought the bowling balls behind you was fun!

I like the gameplay and the upgrade variety. I wish you can auto reload the gun though. Also, some music and sound effects can also improve the game experience.

some lag on the attacking? or maybe i'm just terrible at this

@alexander-epton The attacks shouldn't be delayed, but if you already attacked there is a cooldown until you can attack again that can feel a bit weird. I think there also might be a bug with the movement of the ball enemy that causes some attacks to miss even if it looks like they hit. I was looking into the bug, but I got kind of burned out at that point, so I just left it as is. Sorry for that, but thanks for trying out the game though! =)

Even though the graphics are a little plain, I LOVE the concept of this. The frantic dodging and taking pickups all makes for a super fun time, not to mention the balls are very challenging but satisfying to destroy. Love it!

I enjoyed the movement quite a bit, though I felt the sword was a little awkward to use (or maybe I'm just extra bad). But overall a great effort! Thanks for uploading

Really fun little game, great job! I like that upgrades can be good, bad or both. One thing I found, how you can basically play the game forever without enemies though, is to skip all bad upgrades by just waiting out the 10 seconds during upgrade selection :D

I see potential in this game. It's fun and challenging. Though, I wish there are more feedbacks on my actions, for I couldnt' ensure if my actions are valid during such a fast pace.

I didn't had the feeling that I did much controlling with the power-ups. I needed other comments to find out what was happening behind me. That is too bad since the action really was behind me instead of in front.
But I like the visuals. Especially the little 'fire-robot' you put on the page. But I didn't come across it in the game. But that was maybe that I stopped too early ..
Well done.

I got up to the side of the ramp so keep running from there I got up to wave 30 but then jumped off the side by a mistake xD. Had fun playing it & there is a lot of potential with idea. Great Job!

I like the concept a lot, the enemies are quite simple but well utilized, same as these modification after every round. I missed the sounds the most and more visual feedback from shooting.

I love the concept! The upgrades and "choose your own difficulty increase" aspect was awesome. One thing that was quite troublesome for me was when you're caught up in an intensive fight and you're clicking rapidly only for the upgrade screen to come up and then you instantly choose something and you have no idea what it is. A short waiting period when clicks aren't registered would fix that and improve the game in my eyes. Music and audio would also greatly improve it but I understand that you didn't have time for it. Been there myself a few times during past Ludum Dares. All in all I really like this game and I think it's great fun!
