Rockatoo by AdamCYounis

[raw]
made by AdamCYounis for Ludum Dare 51 (COMPO)

Angus has a dream to be a rock star! His choreography and vocals are impeckable, but sometimes Angus can’t stick to the script! Fit Angus’ unplanned moves into the routine before they steal the show!

(New moves appear every 10 seconds!)

Controls: - Mouse to move through the UI - Arrow keys for dance moves - Any move can be used in "_" spots

Options: - If the beat isn't synced with the notes, hit ESC during a song to bring up volume and beat timing controls where you can manually adjust the timings. For most players this is unnecessary but may help some.

Best played in full screen.

You've managed to incorporate a "punishing" take on the theme without making me feel like the punishments are just something that had to be coded in. In fact, it feels quite natural to make mistakes like that when trying to perform in front of a crowd.

Incredibly polished and fun. I can't believe you made 3 songs too.

One criticism I have is that it's hard to see the new moves at the top while having to concentrate on the bottom.

Great submission!

Nailing it with the AC/DC tribute! This was fun and a really good length. Obviously the music is a high point here, but the art is great, too.

Heads up that there may be a bug: both times I played, after completing the game and circling back to the main title screen and re-entering the first song, it freezes with the bird head-banging but no song, no crowd movement, and the notes never come.

If I could tweak one thing it would be to not have to move my hand to the mouse to click continue in this otherwise keyboard-controlled game. And that ain't much!

It must be really, really hard to convey any information in a game like this where the player's eyes are so hard-locked on the incoming notes. The bird did a good job of emoting, and the transparent scoring data was nice -- both gave me the hints that something was happening I didn't understand. My first run I thought I should do nothing on the _ beats. My second I thought it didn't matter what I did as long as I did anything. It wasn't until late in run three that I realized what the stuff at the top was up to.

But even when I was a bit clueless about the scoring rules I was having fun. And the game did not punish me for my misunderstandings in any way that interfered with enjoying it.

Nice work on a strong well-rounded compo entry!

Wonderful art and love the little bird sound effect and the music, Might be worth adding an itch.io embedded version or a download as the LD embed cuts off a bit of the screen on certain window sizes/aspect ratios?
You don't loose much but given the art is such a big focus in this game it's a bit of a shame to cut a few pixels off the lower right.

Wowowow, Angus rocks! Very creative approach to this theme and amazing execution! Everything is real nice, I'm glad this rythm game is forgiving with the timing and still within reason. It feels natural! Graphics, visual feedback, music, SFX... it's all well done! I spesfically love the fact that he already headbangs when you hover over the 'Play' button, it gets me ready to rock. I had a good time filling in my '_' notes with the left arrow key to make Angus slowly leave my screen haha

I actually didn't even notice that there were things happening on the top part of my screen, until I saw a comment about it. It was a mix of me having to concentrate on the lower part of the screen and the unfortunate LD embed cropping, which almost completely cuts it off. Also sometimes I'd get these notes at the exact same time with the scripted notes, that means I'd have to play two different keys at the exact same time.

But besides that, I'm a big fan of Angus and I'd like to come to his next show so I can get his autograph ( ̄▽ ̄*)b

Love the music choice, nice graphics, overall it's simple and clean! The only issue I had is the moves on top are not really noticeable right away.
Maybe add move content and release it as a full blown game, I'd play it! Keep it up!

Had a great time playing this. Next to the game itself, which is amazing, there are a lot of nice little touches like the menu bg changing when hovering the start button and the crowd going wild on combo's.
If I had to give some feedback it would be that not all important elements were in my field of view. It was hard for me to see the moves I had to sneak in (at the top of the screen) and the moves I had to perform as part of the script (at the bottom). On the other hand, it did add some pressure and difficulty.

Super nice entry, keep up the great work!

This feels so ambitious for the jam, and to come out with something so playable and satisfying is super impressive. The songs were really well judged for the format and I liked that each level was tied in to a location. It was really tricky to look up to the top and see the moves I needed to fit in, but that didn't detract from the enjoyment. Lovely art work as per. Overall - superb.

Lots of bird games in this compo. And by a lot, I mean as many as.... two.

The game itself very cool, surprising, with simple animations, but beautifully done graphics. For me, top marks, I don't know what to attach to here, especially since it's a compo.

Very cool entry! Found it a bit hard to keep the extra moves on the top of the screen in my view and apply them with everything else going on, but that also might as well be the intent here. I like how punchy you made every input feel and I love the poses you created for the bird. They're hilarious, and easy to translate into the desired input! The theme feels a bit shoehorned in, but I guess that's more a fault of the theme, not you. Good job! :)

Great entry, nicely polished, with 5/5 music and graphics. Very enjoyable gameplay overall.

- I also found the unplanned moves mechanic a bit confusing at first
- It felt like my eyes were running across the screen vertically quite a bit, trying to see the upcoming notes, the unplanned moves, and also to admire the big bird - I found watching the big bird slide across the stage and bust its moves the most exciting, so for myself at least, I think I would've enjoyed an UI that allowed for that more.

This is insanity!!! You managed to squeeze down the amount of work I could do in 3 days into 2!!! I love how everything fits together to make a wonderfully crafted experience; the art, the music, the flipping *character!* It all works for the greater good of the unfortunately short game... Enjoyed this one a lot! The soundtrack is amazing. And while the gameplay is not very innovative, it is easy to learn and fun to play. I also dig the art style. My only critique is that it is hard to focus on the upper side of the screen. Hence I failed a lot beceause I missed some moves. But I think if I practice a little bit, it should be doable.

Amazing visuals (as expected) and really catchy music!
Very polished and fun game, only issue I had was I had to refresh each time I wanted to play again (playing through a second time didn't load the song for me)

Difficulty ramp between songs felt good, first one was slow enough to get the hang of it, and the final song was manic enough to feel like a challenge to get a good score, needed a few attempts to even get a 3rd star!

Congrats on such a great entry!

Easily one of my favourite games so far. I followed you since LD46, and you always present amazing stuff. I am trying to get a perfect score in each scene ahah.

The pixel art is just breath-taking, the music got me head-banging, and the twist on rythm games was a nice touch.

Very cool, very polished! The music was great and the graphics spot on.
The mechanic is brilliant, but it took me until the third song to figure out how it worked. I was to focused on actually hitting the poses that apeared. Also, it felt like the top of the screen was clipped? At least when playing the embedded version. Anyway, great game. A very impressive compo entry!

that was great. I really liked the whole style and drawing in pixel art. It looks great, everything is perfectly recognizable and actually the whole graphics didn't have to work much. It's just drawn well and smart at the same time. The soundtrack absolutely rocks and if I wasn't clumsy I would have enjoyed the game a lot more. But that's more my problem. I enjoyed it anyway

Nice game! The graphics are beautiful, and I love the setting/mood.

The actual gameplay isn't *that* innovative - the blank spaces are kind of like the wide bars in guitar hero. But it's still a lot of fun to play, because it's well executed and nice to look at.

Thanks for making this!

The graphics, colors and music are excellent. In some way though, the music felt more like a distraction, because I don't think that perfect moves match the beat 100%, but maybe that's intended? However, good job! All your games really have a unique look to them. Looking forward to your next one!

@zubspace if you hit escape during a song, there's a slider to synchronise the timing in case there's latency in the audio on your PC. It's a hidden feature, and I mostly left it that way as the default setting seemed good enough for most users.

08. Oct 2022 · 00:08 UTC
Hey, great game! I love rhythm games, they're one of my favorite genres. The art for this game is stunning, the bird is really cool and really cute at the same time and I love the stylization. The actions were funny and dramatic, and I liked that the symbols for the rhythm game were the actions that the bird then immediately did. Something about that was funny to me. It was neat that you didn't use the default arrow keys, but it still felt really intuitive. The "do anything" spaces were a nice touch too, that was fun and cool!

The music was also fantastic, as was the timing of the beats, and the game felt so responsive. I was surprised at how smooth it got, usually rhythm games let you give your own input lag offset, but I didn't feel I needed one here.

My one real note is that the extra poses that fall from above were hard to see and hard to understand. They were partially cut off on my screen, so I couldn't see them clearly, and I was so focused on where the notes were coming from, I didn't notice them at first and didn't understand why my combo kept breaking. Even once I did notice them, it took me a while to understand what I had to do to hit those notes in time. Maybe a little more information on them in the tutorial would have helped.

Also, I saw someone else already pointed it out, but when you try to replay it, there's no music or notes.

Overall, really great game! It felt really polished and complete and I had a ton of fun playing it! One of my favorites of the jam so far!

Really awesome work. Love the Australian representation.
I didn't realise until the third track that I'm meant to weave the moves from the top of the page into the freeform bits. I couldn't take my eyes off the bottom half of the screen to see what they were though. I wish that they were in a place that was easier to glance at

Fantastic entry. Artwork is charming and competent, and the game plays flawlessly and feels great, especially for a rhythm game which I guess isn't the easiest type of game to implement.
