Steamship Battle by Heho

[raw]
made by Heho for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

In this steampunk roguelike you have to bring your steamship to safety. Normally that would be an easy task. Just flick on the good old invisibility field and run away. However your funds are pretty low and so you only could get the cheap 10/10 invisibility field. Despite its name it is arguably the worst invisibility field generator on the market. It stays on for ten seconds, then needs to recharge for another ten, before being available for ten seconds again.

Attack when the shield is up, so the enemies cannot see you and counterattack. When the shield is about to turn off, it is best to hide from the enemies!

Controls:

WASD to steer the ship

ScrollWheel to zoom

1-4 to select a weapon

MouseClick to fire the selected weapon

Alt+F4 closes the game

Collect coins from unsuspecting enemies to unlock new ships. But be careful, if you touch the land you loose.

you probably need to rebalance the game a bit, dying from 1 hit but requiring multiple torpedoes to kill and enemy is pretty unfair in the beginning

I dig the theme idea. Pirates are always a good time.
the floompy controls remind me of that Overboard game from the PS1

You able to release a Mac or Web build? Would love to play!

@pete-thorne we sadly are not able to do that you need a Mac to compile for mac with UE and they dropped official support for web some time ago. We can try to build it for web, but last time we did so there were many problems that were not easily fixable

Nice art style. Menus looks a bit different from background, but nice work anyway.

@heho Ah sad times! I'm using Godot and I have to say the cross-platform support is pretty neat. It's not as powerful as UE in FPS type games, but v4 is looking stronger in 3D and it's just so light with a tiny d/l and hardly any bloat.

Fun game, I love Steampunk! Adding multiple ships is a nice tough as well. GG

Cool concept and neat aesthetic, but rather punishing gameplay; really harsh to die in one hit and whenever you touch land. Also, the enemy boats seemed to often get stuck headfirst against the terrain.

love the steampunk aesthetic and your water shader was really nice. Gameplay however was a bit janky and punishing. not really knowing where your shots would land and controlling the ship was quite though. Still really cool though.

Great Job! I really like the art direction and the music. I like the challenge of trying to strike the other ships while the shield is up and also avoiding the land.

Great game !! really good concept. Got stuck in middle for a while but figured out the way later. Awesome work for a limited time jam. You shoud go with this concept further. Please do check out my submission as well.

Interesting concept, great interpretation of the theme and I liked the aesthetic, but unfortunately I ran into a lot of bugs; from the ship rotating randomly when reversing to my gun not firing, which, on top of unpredictable controls - for a game with instant death if you touch something - made the gameplay rather unenjoyable.

The idea is good, music and sfx is also pretty nice. The gameplay is kind of hard, I don't think I managed to destroy even one ship. The ship needs to stop completly in order to shoot so it's hard to dodge against multiple ships.
Great try anyway, needs a bit of rebalancing

I'm gonna be brutally honest here, I didn't find the game fun really. The graphics were nice, I thought the ship controls well enough, but anything involving combat is a glitchy chore unfortunately. This could've been a really cool game, but a lot of bugs needed to be fixed. I also feel like combat is skewed too much towards the enemies favor.

Keep working at it though, I'm sure a post-jam version could be way better.

Neat idea! I had a frustrating time with the controls and with how fragile my ship was. Ten seconds didn't seem like enough time to get out of hiding, find an enemy, defeat them, and hide again. The music was a little confusing, I wasn't sure if it was even playing right. You got a lot done in this jam, so it's understandable that it might not be perfectly balanced :)
