Avery Ten 2ndth: Savior of Cleveland by CaptainDreamcast

[raw]
made by CaptainDreamcast for Ludum Dare 51 (COMPO)

Cleveland in the year 2009. A good samaritan who slingshots parents across the city. A time traveler looking for the man that killed his father. A rogue AI set on Cleve-domination. Classic Cleveland stuff. In the same way Death Stranding set off the genre of strand-like games, Avery Ten Secondth will most likely kick off the Cleveland-like game genre. Cleve-like. Clevish. Finding the name will probably be the biggest struggle for the genre going forward.

So yeah, this one is a bit rough, not going to lie. It's one of those Ludum Dare games where you run out of time and put together the pieces at the end and just hope it kinda runs. It became clear after five minutes that the protagonist should be called Avery Ten Secondth (II), and everything else kinda came out of that. Not sure where Cleveland came from, it's just a funny name (Cleveland is a beautiful city on the way up, in fact it became so beautiful that I had to set the game 10 years in the past because today it would have been too unrealistic to have it a wasteland). So now that I have hopefully dodged the hexes and curses of the Clevelandian population (the Cleves as we call them), thank you for trying my LD game and thanks a lot for playing!

Dreamcast version will come later.

Update: Dreamcast version is now online on itch too. My favorite version this time, it runs pretty well.

I couldn't hear any sounds. It would be way easier if there was a voice that was telling the rules.
Reading and moving at the same time is tough!

I like the graphics and the balloon-tank made me smile :!

good job

I was so busy laughing my ass off about your story that I totally forgot about gameplay. Fortunately, the game practically plays itself, you have infinite lives and you glitch through anything you hit

Great Intro and theme interpretation too but when I played there were bugs (collisions and physics).

I was narrating the story out loud to my friends, and we were laughing at every single line. Incredible work all around! The humor is top notch, the story is fantastic, and the gameplay got several chuckles.

The only complaint is the font was hard to read at times. Incredible work.

Edit: It's an absolute crime your game didn't score higher in Humor.

Not bad, font was a bit hard to read and the clipping up and down during platforming should be fixed.

You sir played me like a fool, shit's hilarious.

Obiously it's a gag game so making a point how some stuff is buggy is a bit pointless, you're not supposed to succed. It's witty and funny although even if it's a joke, the music is a tad bit grading and stuff is a bit too fast to appreciate the humour sometimes.

Really unique, almost satire-like of other game jams games that do similar mechanics, including one I made not too long ago.

After witnessing this masterpiece, I can say that the Clevelike genre has a strong flagship game. The city of Cleveland, once tragically underrepresented in video gaming, will come to dominate the cultural zeitgeist. Imagine: tributes to Cleveland in every city square, Cleve-shops on every corner, Cleve-burgers in every hungry hand. This masterpiece of a product will usher in a new age of humanity, one devoted entirely to Cleveland. No more anthropocene, but Clevelopocene.
In all honesty I did fall through the floor several times, and I had to reload the page and skip through the intro thrice, and the unforgiving speed at which the obstacles fly at you makes it near-impossible to dodge anything, but that's not why I kept playing. I kept playing because you got me hooked with a funny concept and a few lines of funny dialogue and visuals that were on the edge of mediocre and horrific, and that's really all I needed.
As an experience, enjoyable.

I love the story and characters. Very wacky indeed! I hope Cleve-likes get the recognition they deserve! The gameplay is also a lot of fun, and I appreciate the 100 starting lives, because I don't think the game would be very possible without them. My only gripes with this game is that the graphics and font make it a bit hard to see what's going on. Other than that, this game is one of my favorites from this jam. :)

Knew I had to play this the moment I saw the title, ended up being the best Clevelike I've ever played. The story is great (do I see a bit of Barkley Gaiden influence in there hmm), got some good laughs out of me. Thanks for giving me 100 lives even though I ended up noclipping out of bounds at like 93 lives and cruised the rest of the way to the end.. actually I'm still not sure if that's a bug or not
