Tennis-Pong-Like Game by Rainsong

[raw]
made by Rainsong for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

It's a Pong variant, but the ball gets faster every ten seconds. You play as the left-hand paddle; the computer plays as the right-hand paddle. If the ball goes off the screen, the paddle on the opposite side gets a point. The first paddle to reach ten points wins. Move your paddle up and down by moving the mouse/cursor up and down inside the blue field of play.

HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, adapting a course project - not much to this, really, but I had a couple hours to toss something together

The link to the itch.io site doesn't seem to be attaching (and the embedded version isn't happy... looks like I missed the screensize restriction), so I'm putting it here: https://rainsong.itch.io/tennis-pong-like-game

This is a great idea; a simple but very effective take on the theme.

I'm having some technical issues, which may just be my computer... The game plays smoothly for the first few seconds, but once the ball gets close to my paddle for the first time everything slows to a crawl. When things become responsive again, the ball is moving too fast to play.

Nice game with cheeky AI. I like the retro ish art style. I did encounter an issue where the ball would respawn with a really high speed, maybe resetting the velocity/speed once it is repositioned in the middle could fix this.

Thanks for trying it out :)

Hmmm. Not sure what's causing the crawl thing. It didn't happen on test plays on two computers...maybe has something to do with browsers?

The amount by which the speed changes probably need to be modified. It's a timeout function separate from the scoring, and might be too much change.

Interesting take on the theme, was fun the first couple rounds but the speed increase seemed to carry over after each round, making it unplayable after a few games. Still a good game overall though!

This is a perfectly fine Pong implementation, but there isn't a whole lot here beyond that. It's impressive that you made this without an engine.

Good adaptation of the theme! It was a little hard to adjust to the ball spawning in the middle and the score text on my first play though was really tiny (fixed on a refresh). Good work :)
