Every Ten Seconds by EOShadows

Note: I have found that for some reason the player's down animation won't show in the embedded version of the game. The game is still very playable, but if you play using the Windows build you'd get to see the character's face.

Every. Ten. Seconds.

Every ten seconds something happens.

It's either a new task, a hurricane of projectiles, or freedom.

In this top down, pixel bullet hell game, you must try to survive as long as you can. Playing as a little spirit wearing a pumpkin, you must keep your health from dropping to zero as you are forced to complete tasks. There are obstacles to get in your way of this, however. There is a clock, and it is ticking. Every ten seconds you are faced with more than just new tasks.

  • One of such events is of course the tasks. You are commanded to complete some form of task that involves interacting with objects. To accomplish that can be as simple as interacting with a single object, or can involve having to obtain a particular item to use on another object. You must complete a task before the next iteration of 10 seconds finishes, or else there are massive penalties that can cut down your health by a lot.

  • Another of these events is a bullet hell style storm of shadowy bullets. Try to outlive this, but watch out. As the game progresses these storms get rougher.

  • And finally, another is the grace of nothing. You are given 10 seconds without having to worry about a task or deal with bullet hell.

pic2.JPG

However, that is not all. Regardless of whether it is a task, a bullet hell, or a break, there are enemies roaming the little space you have that aim to harm you. Best not get close to them.

Despite all of these obstacles, whatever being has put you through this confusing torture, you won't let them have the satisfaction of watching you give up. Survive as many iterations of this cycle as you can to spite the being that did this to you.

Controls:

  • WASD/arrow keys/right thumbstick to move.
  • Enter/gamepad button A to interact with something.
  • Space / Escape / gamepad button B to pause the game.

The graphics look really nice. I like the idea and it'd be awesome to see more variation with the tasks. Slightly bigger environment would be nice since now the ghosts seem to be always on you. It'd be nice to give the player some sort of victory condition though.

Hi, @she-wrote ! Thanks or playing, I'm glad you liked it!

Thanks, @vilmantas! Funny thing is that was all planned originally. I thought of having some small but difficult thing you have to do in order to escape the cycles, but I kind of quickly realized I wouldn't have time for that. As to the extra land there is actually a bit of land currently being hidden by a mask that I didn't get around to having get revealed xD.

I loved the adorableness and the graphics of the game! I also love how the character is a pumpkin head for the spooky season! I do wish there was some sort of sprint button or an increase in the speed of the character. The character seems a little slow for how much dodging there is in the game. Overall a really cute and creative game!

@elliescape Thanks so much for playing! I'm glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for the feedback! I agree, that would be a great feature.

Really great graphics and sound effects, and I liked that there was variation in the number of steps each task required.

This is largely personal preference, but I think the font you've used looks a bit out of place with the rest of the art. I'd recommend using a pixel font, instead; there are some really great CC0 ones that I keep going back to (e.g. [m5x7](https://managore.itch.io/m5x7) and [monogram](https://datagoblin.itch.io/monogram)).

I like the artstyle and the detail of how the camera moves away from you on the same direction you're going. gameplay is pretty nice and simple with the addition of dodging ghosts and projectiles. Nice job!

The sound effects do get a little repetitive, and they are a tad loud for my taste. The graphics on the other hand, were a lot of fun. I liked the graphical theme - the colors fit very nicely.

I really like the concept of your game, it is simple and fun. Graphics and sounds are great too! Awesome for a game made alone, you can be proud of you!

@pennycook Thanks for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, that's the default font or Unity. Definitely could have tried to setting it to a font to fit the rest of the graphics more. Thanks for the feedback!

@megafuze Thanks for playing, I'm glad you liked it!

@beetlebox Thanks for playing! Darn, thanks for the feedback. I can never seem to get those sound effects right apparently haha. Glad you enjoyed everything else though!

@mattguil Thank you very much, I'm glad you liked it!

This is such a nice game :) The art is lovely and it is quite addictive. Its quite fast paced but I like the idea of the tasks stacking up so its not too difficult

Very pretty colors and style! Loved the sounds! A little stumped at the beginning of the game!

Great colour scheme and strangely ominous music. Took me a while to figure out the envelopes were health things and on the embedded version the top was a cut off so I didn't see the health bar and first task until I entered fullscreen. However in fullscreen, the character speed seemed a little too slow. Overall though I liked it - nice concept, addictive gameplay and interesting tasks!

@r3l0ad1 Thank you so much for playing! I'm glad you liked it. And thanks for the feedback, I had at one point considered making it not stack (and then maybe game over or something if you couldn't complete a task) so I'm glad you liked how it currently is!

@vera-babchenko Thanks so much for playing, I'm glad you liked it!

@gossian Thank you so much for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah the imbedded stuff is weird, sorry about that. Thanks for the input about the movement though, that is definitely interesting.

My high score was 14 iterations. I found the enemy movement unique and really enjoyed that some tasks took two actions to complete. I would have preferred more variety in audio but with the time restrictions, you did a great job :).

@house-trap-charlie Thanks for playing, I'm glad you liked it! Agreed, there are a lot of sound effects / music I would have liked to implement. I had thought of making the clock ticking go up in pitch as it got closer to the end of an iteration, for example. Very unfortunate I couldn't get to that. ^^;

I think I got the strat down. Just gotta make sure to always have wood chip on hand

96 iters. is that the high score so far? 😎
What's yours?

I love that every time I play one of your games it's a significant improvement from the previous one. Keep em coming! This one had some really nice artwork, although I personally don't like the shaders used to apply filters, it's probably just my opinion but I feel like it takes away from the pixel aesthetic. Otherwise, great work :)

@technonugget Thanks for playing, I'm glad you liked it! Dang though, I've never gotten to that many iterations haha. I think my best was 40.

Great visuals and I really enjoyed the gameplay – is there a way to fight the ghosts btw? Anyway the random tasks were really fun – I guess some crit would be when you get in the higher scores etc you could have more or just different tasks for example. In a larger game that would be ideal but obviously for 3 days work its great – lots of fun!

@rdawg7 Thanks for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for the feedback! I actually started on extra rooms to popup throughout the game where more tasks could appear, but I scrapped it so I could focus on other features during the time constraint. I think they're still in the game actually, just deactivated haha.

Yeah good decision – it's much more complete this way :) three days isn't a lot of time haha.

I had fun playing the game, the colors and sound created a unique atmosphere. I got stucked on the "feeding the bird" task I don't know why, I guess I missed something ?

@lene Thanks for playing, I'm glad you liked it! That's my bad, I meant to have the tasks give some kind of message to give some explanation about why a player couldn't complete a task, but I couldn't quickly figure out how given how I implemented the task messaging. You need to first go get the seeds (the unsuspicious bags somewhere in the map) to feed the bird (make sure the UI says you are actually holding the seeds before interacting with the bird).
