Consumption by Aevek

[raw]
made by Aevek for LD33 (JAM)
A simple survival sandbox game that was originally intended to be a compo entry, but ended up needing longer to make the game I wanted. Actually my second survival game for Ludum Dare, this one went much much better than the last. You would never believe me if I said I don't really like survival games.

Just a windows build for now, I'll hopefully add other builds as I can test and release them. Should be soon, assuming that there are no issues.

You are left to survive in a miniature ecosystem, but be careful as your needs and desire to build can quickly cause the world to go badly wrong if you consume recklessly. If you are not careful you will become the monster that is destroying the world.

After picking up an item you can craft with it by clicking on it on your inventory screen, then select a recipe to craft it (provided you have enough resources).
You start with no tools, but you can craft rocks that you pick up off the ground to make a knife, which should be enough to get you started.

If you guys build anything cool in my game and take screenshots please send them too me its super cool to see what other people make in my game. Good ways would be to post links in the comments or to tweet them @Aevek

UPDATE 1.1
Two game breaking bugs have been fixed. In accordance with Ludum Dare rules(?) the original is still available, but I recommend the 1.1 fixed version. Everything else is the same.
-Bug preventing inventory from being opened
-Bug preventing the end of the world

Controls
WASD to move
TAB to open inventory

Awesome! Graphics are great and it's got loads of features for a LD game. UI seems a little buggy, but other than that great entry!

This is a neat game, but I didn't really understand how to play it. The graphics were very well done and the controls were good. I chased after a rabbit for a while and picked up some rocks, but I wasn't sure what to do after that.

Couldn't do anything. Just walked around picking up rocks. Nice scenery though!

Not sure how to get sticks? I walked around for a bit and got rocks, but it wasn't clear how to do anything else. The graphics are neat, I really like the polygon bunnies and deer.

You need to fix the tab key mapping. It works like once but then stops responding so you can't open your inventory. Too bad this bug makes this otherwise promising game unplayable :(

I couldn't figure out how to select and use the tools.
I tried using the number keys and didn't see any effect.
I chased a rabbit, but he was too fast to catch. Wandered around trying to interact with trees and water, but couldn't get it.

Great Jam! I had to actively decide to stop playing it, so it definitely captured my attention. Solid survival game mechanics are a great way to do that. One criticism is that it would have felt a bunch more polished if there was audio.

The environment is very pretty but the edges have some sort of weird glow that takes away from the view up close.

Maybe I didn't get far enough in the game, but I don't really see the monster part? I didn't kill anything before it broke so maybe something happens then I guess.

I had a few glitches where I would lose the ability to open inventory or switch weapons, so I was unable to explore the full game.

Other than those problems the game is absolutely great. The minimalism is done well and the survival and building aspects are well done. I wish I had explored more of the game before it broke the inventory.

@the people who got stuck, press tab to open inventory, craft rocks into a knife. You can take it from there.

If you have the issue with the inventory breaking, please let me know what you did to break it and what(if anything) brought it back, as I've been unable to reproduce the issue. Thanks!

Oh my god! I love the game. It's a shame that no sounds, but still cool.

I love the graphics and style. The water looks really cool, unless you enter it :P.

The UI looks and works nice.

So I'm punching this small tree with my hatchet, and it breaks and a bunny spawns inside it and keeps flying in the air :D.

So I keep collecting stuff and my inventory gets full. I almost died of hunger because I could not make arrows or a weapon (full inventory). Also the arrows seem to pass through the animal and not do anything...

I can't kill anything...
I just found out there a sprint button!

OK, I'm done. Cool game!

The season changed, and the floating animals were always funny. I managed to make a house, but then I got a bit bored. It's relaxing, but I don't get why you're the monster? I may not have played for long enough, but the "reckless consumption" sounds a little forced. It's fun if one reads the description, cause the first time I started I had no idea about anything and died

WOW great art! The mechanic is very sweet. It's fun to play.

I'm really impressed with so many features in a LD game.
Big congrats on your time management skills. It was really hard for me to finish my game in time hahaha I did it, but it was hard.

Just one little note: I think the tab key is not working how it should. Sometimes it just don't work at all. Just a minor bug for a great game. Congrats!

@bakakyo My time management secret was not sleeping anything like enough. This resulted in a couple game breaking bugs from coding while tired that I had to fix once I'd had some proper sleep. But thanks!

Dang man this looks like quite the undertaking. Awesome graphics and controls/UI seem pretty solid.

Seems like I can't close the options screen. Had to restart. It looks cool, but I couldn't see any sticks or anything to do any crafting with. Had a nice wander round picking up rocks though.

Great game!

I really like the astethics, the level design and I'm amazed by how much you were able to accomplish during 72h.

At first I scoured the valley for the second stick (there is exactly one spawned at start) and only after five tries did I realize I could make a knife from rocks and start cutting down the brush. The GUI is a bit wonky, so it wasn't immediately obvious that I could make a knife. After that, progress is rapid. There is not much to do endgame, but that is kind of expected.

Even though I wasted half an hour walking around pointlessly, I had fun with this game.

Nice little survival game. But why am I the monster?

Wow man, this is incredibly ambitious for a jam game, but you still somehow pulled it off. A lot more mechanics and gameplay systems in place than I expect. Could do with a little more player feedback when interacting with objects. Other than that, though, really impressive submission.

This game is awesome! Sadly, it doesn't fit the theme at all, but you made a minimalistic crafting sandbox within the Ludum Dare, very cool.

I really liked how trees fell down and then were turned into items. Items were a little hard to pick up though until you get the hang of it.

Built a few things (I think everything that was possible, at least I didn't see any more items) the best thing being a shelter right above a campfire. The fire turned bright white and there was dark smoke everywhere. Good smoke physics :).
