YAHG - Yet Another Harvesting Game by Jvdwijk

[raw]
made by Jvdwijk for Ludum Dare 52 (JAM)

Play the game here

Intro

This is your average farming sim; plant seeds, water them, harvest them for food!

Wait, that is not the point of this game? The plants ATTACK YOU? Can you at least eat them afterwards? No, but you get strange abilities from them? Well, this makes my job a lot more interesting!

**Note: We overscoped way too much

Controls

  • WASD - Movement
  • , - Toggling Cursor
  • Left Click - Melee
  • Right Click - Ability
  • 1, 2, 3 - Change abil

Known Bugs

  • Highscores not saving
  • Jump/Blink ability a bit finicky.
  • Bomb ability not being selected on harvest, press 1 after unlocking!

Goal

Reach the tower by unlocking all 6 abilities found in the different areas!

Idea

We wanted to create a small game in which you had to fight waves of enemies to grow flowers. These flowers would give you new abilities with which you can fight better and enter new areas. Unfortunately we overscoped way to much and missed out on a lot of QOL features and a lot of polish. We also did not have enough time to implement all of the audio that our composer and voice actor delivered.

Funny tutorial. It could use some more sound on the action interaction (like when the plants attack)

Overall nice game!

Thanks for submitting your game on the stream!
Here’s the start of your game if you wanted to re-watch initial thoughts youtu.be/y26fNN5FUi0?t=6943

Great foundation, just too much scope as you mentioned! Congrats on the entry!

Also worth noting that playing and rating other games gets your game promoted for others to rate (it looks like you haven't rated any yet). You need 20 ratings to get final scores!

Fun(ny), if a bit janky 😁 Voice acting and story are great, main problem with gameplay is really a lack of feedback to know if you're actually hitting an enemy, a visual cooldown for your abilities, things like that. Quite impressive how big of a level you managed to put together for a jam. Music is really nice and billboard characters are always fun. Needs work, but I liked it!

Good graphics, music and voice acting. But I couldn't figure out what to do after getting around with WASD.

It took me a while to understand what I was doing (because I didn't read the bugs listing for how to get the bombs to go lol, and missed the whole "press E to absorb new ability" so I couldn't even figure out how to move the first time, whoops, but then I got it!). Also I died at one point and was disappointed that the whole game reset, but it's totally fair given that this whole thing was made in 72 hours!!! 😮 That's a heck of an accomplishment, and I really hope to see more from you, whether that's progress on this game, releasing more stuff, or both :D

i loved the tutorial and i feel like it captured the essence of slime rancher. the level is really impressive also make sure to play more games to get more reviews. not jumping is annoying i expected movement options. and locking me in place for tutorial is a game crime

Definitely needs some gameplay polish but the core concept is pretty solid, and the level design and amount of content is impressive. Great music and the voice acting worked well for explanations, though I think some things may have been better conveyed in more of a visual or "show don't tell" kind of way. Also it is possible to get stuck and softlock in the upper area near the drawbridge before you get the jump which was a bit frustrating. Lack of checkpoints or a way to regenerate health was a bit rough too, I got the gun and then died in the next area. Still quite impressive for a jam game, nice work!

Really nice submission! I'd say it needs a little sanding around the edges with things like graphics and such, but other than that I throughly enjoyed it! I really like playing jam games with voice acting, and this is no exception -- I don't know what it is, but something about DIY voice acting just fits these games so well ()! I really liked playing through what I did, but unfortunately resetting the game after death warded me away from finishing it; I'm not sure *exactly* what the alternative would be other than moving you back to the starting area with full health, but I don't think resetting is the best option, just because of the progression of the game (:cold_sweat:).

Super well done otherwise, I loved it! Good job (all 8 of you :O), keep it up, and I'll see you next jam!

What you had was pretty good. It would have helped if there was more content to interact with the plants (although overscoping is a problem). It was also difficult to hit and see plants. A mushroom killed me and I thought it was gone because I couldn't see it. Also, it was a bit annoying when I selected the apple, but couldn't unselect it so my hand kept on shaking. Additionally, some more sound effects would be nice.

The voice tutorial was a really nice touch to the game. It told you exactly what to do in character. This was also a good concept for a game and could be pretty fun if there was more content.

I like the direction, but it needs a lot of polishing, especially the combat. It is very unclear how much range the melee attacks have, a visual or audio clue would be great!
The tutorial is really well done, telling you exactly what to do, the voice also fits perfectly. It is quite weird being unable to move at the beginning, I thought my keyboard didn't work...

Voiceover is soooo cool and gameplay, abilites are fun! Good job. If you would like to shred some zombies in slowmo, be sure to check out my entry :)

I think one thing that helps in jams like this where scope creeps is just to use fewer team members. Trying to get so many people working on one project and working cohesively and actually having proper roles and not butting heads without having to overly comment your code or anything works against your scope, but a well crafted entry nonetheless
