Combine Harvester: Time Attack! by Christian Zommerfelds

[raw]
made by Christian Zommerfelds for Ludum Dare 52 (COMPO)

Race against the clock to harvest your crops as quickly as possible.

Coordinate multiple combine harvesters to split the work!

How to play

In order to progress you must finish harvesting a field before the time limit. Use the arrow keys to move once you select a vehicle. The game should be self explanatory mostly. For the levels with multiple combines it's not well explained though: first you record the drive of one machine, then you press the |< button to restart the timer. Then click on a different machine and drive it in parallel (the other will move automatically).

Haxe Heaps LDtk Krita Aseprite

Post submit changes

  1. Text typo.
  2. Fixed bad bug with the time step loop making the game go too fast for some people.
  3. Fixed bug where you could start the timer without having anything selected.
  4. Added some help text when the time is up.

Notes

OK yeah I admit I took the theme quite literally. If I had more time I would have added more level elements that forces you to synchronize your combine harvesters to go in a certain order (e.g. moving obstacles, different size machines, grain carts).

Thanks a lot for playing!

Peaceful! Unfortunately I encountered a couple of game play issues.

1. Time seems to be passing very, very fast...I used a stopwatch and in the time that 5 IRL seconds had passed, 13 had passed in game. That makes it really difficult to complete a level, and I tried a few times and couldn't get past level 2.

2. The hitbox, unfortunately I got stuck a lot on the white fences and it's a bit difficult to move away from them once you're stuck.

I haven't tried level 3,4, 5 so I can't comment on those. I need help for level 2 haha.

@feor, thanks for the early feedback! I think I fixed the timing issue. That was quite a bad bug. Let me know if it was fixed.

@christian-zommerfelds Just tested it, it works great now. The second level is still surprisingly difficult (or I'm just bad at this haha). The game is way more interesting when you start playing with multiple harvesters, it's really satisfying watching them do their thing in parallel. Probably could use some more finely tuned controls for deciding which harvester you want to record again, but hey, it's a jam. Good work!

Solid entry, the fact that you can record a path for the harvester is really cool. While the gameplay is basic the controls are still pretty good. Too bad you didn't have time to make sound, that would have made the game really pop off!

There's something innately satisfying about this kind of task, so I really like the core interaction. The turning radius of the combine also makes it fun to try to optimize your route. I found the second level to be pretty tough and was a bit confused as to why nothing happened when I reached 100% completion (I think it was because I didn't complete it in time). Thanks for sharing!

I can consider to increase the time for the second level, but not sure if that would be fair!

Nice entry, 2D farming sim. :) Art and controls all fit theme well. Good work.

I like how the fields look like nuggets. I collected wheat like I eat nuggets. From outside to inside.

Very cool entry. For some reason I found it so relaxing, while also being quite challenging.

The controls feel very good, which is really what makes the game interesting, so good job on that!

It took me a while to figure out how to select another harvester... Might be because I'm tired though x). At first I assumed that it would automatically jump back to the beginning of the timer when I would reach the end, but it was not the case.

The visuals are really cool! Some music would have been awesome :D

Nice entry!

For some reason I can't move the vehicule? But pressing an arrow still lauch the timer?
I can't play it for now but the graphics are really cute nevertheless!

Haha, it feels like this is basically the game I ended up making, I do like how in this game you're definitely carving a little path through your fields, whereas in the game I made it's a little chunkier...

It seems like sleecting the harvester initially on startup sometimes bugs out, ie. if you press "up" arrow before selecting the harvester, the timer starts already, but once the timer has started you can no longer select your harvester?

(also for some reason after reaching 100% completion you don't always proceed to the next level?)

Overall, an interesting entry, and I like the kind of birds eye view you have in this :)

Nice work!

No wonder people like farming simulators, it's quite mesmerizing to plow through a field. Good job! :D

Thanks for the feedback, all! It's encouraging to get positive and constructive feedback.

I fixed the bug where you could start the timer without clicking on the machine. Also I added a small indication after the progress to tell you the time is up.

I had to try for 4 times the level 5, but I did it!
Always satisfying to harvest fields, isn't it?

Nice game, I enjoyed it

This is my favorite game I've played. It simultaneously excites my intense desires for micromanagement and optimization, while also forgiving my shortcomings at keyboard control by allowing multiple play-throughs. I consider the attached screenshot worthy of putting on a resume, as it is one of my proudest achievements.

But seriously, the mechanics are fantastic. The driving is super intuitive once you get used to the top-down feel, and I **LOVED** the dual-harvester mechanic starting on level 3. I loved seeing my old actions play through in parallel. Thank you for the fun game!

Satisfying to harvest a field completely!!! Your game vey well triggers this completion, "clean-up" feel.
I like the little, simple but effective animation of the harvester (the wheels turning into the direction).
I love the controls: like driving an RC harvester.
Very nice game!

Good game. The harvester controls well and the graphics are nice and clear. Level was nice and calm and satisfying. Level 2 was challenging and I didn't manage to clear it.

Great game, I was surprised to not see more of these games. It's the first thing that comes to mind, thinking of a harvest game. The second level was already too hard for me

Very relaxing to listen to some tunes and just harvest away! Unfortunately wasn't able to beat level 2 despite a few tries, I guess I'm not cut out for farming :( Nice entry!

Controls work very well, going forward and backwards. Intelligent system to create the levels with PNG images and different colors, you can add new elements in the maps.
Great work!

I spent to much time trying to finish the last level, but eventually I had. Simple idea, but interesting view, using a "one time, multiple plaths" mechanic was clever for this kind of game (I wouldn't have think of that). And even if I had hard times finishing it, difficulty level seems well (I'm just bad, that's all), so: good job!

I loved how relaxing this game was, even with the timer. Solid execution on a fun mechanic. Great work!

We were planning on making something similar! Interesting to see your take on it. The multiple harvester levels were especially interesting, given the "replay" mechanic. Could have used some sfx to spice up the mood.
