Asteroid Rush by Aarimous

[raw]
made by Aarimous for Ludum Dare 52 (COMPO)

Asteroid Rush was made for Ludum Dare 52.

How to Play:

  • Fling asteroids at the planets by clicking and dragging in the opposite direction of where you want the asteroid to go
  • But be careful, the collision speed must be slow enough to earn points
  • Too fast (red outline on asteroid) and you will deal damage to the planet and loose points
  • The game is over after 2 minutes

Description:

Welcome to the Aarimous Asteroid Harvesting Corp. The year is 2100, and you’ve been in Cryo-sleep for the past 77 years. Turns out all that holiday food put you in a bit more than just a food coma. Anyways, our goal here is to harvest asteroids from the belt and fling them to the various planets in our Solar System. Now, to ensure you get paid fairly, or paid at all, we keep a close eye on your score. You earn points by delivering the asteroids to the planets, but be careful the asteroids must collide with the right speed. Too fast you lose points and well that might end up killing some civilians.. Which would frankly just be bad for business. Alright, good luck out there, now don’t blow up any planets on your first day, cheers!

Love the sound effects - it's worth it just for them.

Agree, the sounds are so cool. Love graphics also, simple and effective desaturated colors.
Im not sure if i understood the gameplay well, I have destroyed all planets but nothing happened after that...
Really fun anyway :)

@salmonmoose Thanks! I had a blast making them and couldn't stop laughing after made the sun's audio lines.
@horda the goal of the game was to send asteroids to the planets at the right speed... but funny enough the game is more fun to just blow them all up.
Thank you both for playing!

Great job all around. Fun gameplay, and I really enjoyed the sounds.

Great graphics and **incredible** sound design! Seemed sorely lacking in some kind of gravity for the asteroids, though. I have to admit-- I had much more fun with this game after I started trying to blow up all the planets instead of safely crash my asteroids into them.

Fun little game! I agree with the commenter above, after a while I didn't care for the points anymore and just tried to fling asteroids every which way to hear the voice lines haha. Also, I thought your name was familiar -- turns out I watched your video on switching from unity to godot just a few days ago. Nice work!

Edit: updated rating.

I'm that person, who skip the story. Got the main mechanics only after I destroyed a few planets and it wasn't good for business indeed. Good small game, fun voice acting

Hey, thanks for playing and leaving a comment. I accidentally opted out of a bunch of categories. Any chance you can update your ratings for all the categories? Cheers! @salmonmoose @horda @paulstraw @untitled-studios @paroxysmal @feor @danmerey

The sound is excellent. Great humor and a fun mechanic. My strategy is to group all the asteroids into the path of the planet I want to hit with subtle directional shots. Lol! You have to heard all those asteroids like sheep into the big point planets!

As everyone else has already mentioned the audio and visuals are great, but i wanted to thank you for including Pluto in the list of planets. They can remove Pluto from books but they can't remove it from our hearts!!!

"You rock but I have some gas!", totally caught me off guard there, good times. Original, solid game, with humor. Nice touch blowing up the planets. Would be cool to play on mobile if you haven't thought about it. Good luck in the Jam.

Genuinely had a lot of fun. High level of polish. Humor, sound effects and graphics are all on point. I really appreciated the intro text being read to me and flinging the asteroid to start is a great idea for a 'how to play' tutorial. Awesome stuff.

Can recommend a minimum of two play-throughs. First, actually try - I mean, you gotta give that sun some cookies. Second, just blow everything up. As @aarimous says, it's just more fun. (And at least earth is clean now. )

Ideas for extension might be some antagonistic comets that come through and steal your asteroids.

I generally approve of any game in space. And this isn't just any game.

Thanks for sharing it!

Really fun SFX design. The dragging and shooting of meteors also feels very tight, and the camera shake when they crash is amazing. Really solid entry.

1.Round: Trying to achieve a high Score
2.Round: Shooting all asteroids in the Orbit of Pluto and waiting
3.Round: Destroying the Universe

Had my Fun :D
Also really great Sound Effects

I liked the mechanics, it's not often you see that kind of things. I just wished there would be a bit more of a challenge, for example gravity slowly attracting asteroids towards the center to add a bit of a "stress factor" and push the player to be a bit more daring?

All in all a fun entry! Congratulations :)

I love those funny sound effects. I think it is more fun to just destroy the planets.

The asteroid flinging mechanic is really fun, especially when you are able to pull of a nice shot to one of the inner or outer planets!

Really fun game! Thank you for the funny VO and SFX! My personal strategy was trying to line up as many asteroids as I could along Pluto's orbit, and then flinging a bunch toward Mercury.

I *accidentally* destroyed every planet (and non-planet) in the universe but was sad to find out that the sun can't be destroyed ;_;

Nice game! funny voice over and sound effects!

Absolutely perfect sound! Uranus has received a high rank!

P.S. thank you for considering Pluto as a planet

This made me think of the old Red Dwarf episode where Lister had to play pool with planets. Interesting concept, it was a challenging throwing everything to the outer ring to line everything up for Pluto

If you put it out for a full release, doing an extended play version with no timer, or have the loss as being when you send too many into the sun and make it super-nova, or destroy all the planets as the lose scenario would be cool.

Fixing the climate one asteroid at a time :)) Cool and fun game. I really liked the start menu! Like in your previous jam games, the personal approach to sound effects gives it such a unique feel.

Great work. Think it would be cool if you added a gravity simulation so asteroids can end up orbiting planets as moon-roids. Also you could then have a planet killing asteroids that you have to use small asteroids to knock out of the solar system or break up.
Maybe more of an asteroid mining take could be added with different asteroids being made up from metals/water/minerals and having values and a multiplayer mode where players compete to mine asteroids?

fun little game with great sound effects! :D
when playing it serious though there should be a penalty for just parking asteroids on the orbits of the planets since it makes it much easier then. maybe score only half the points when the asteroid is not in motion any more?
