Bop To The Chop

Chop the trees to the beat of the song! Had to pull an all night cause I only had time to start last night but at least I got something done!

Game Information

Bop To The Chop is a short rhythm game I made in under 24 hours for the 52nd Ludum Dare game jam. The goal of the game is to match the beat of the song with your axe hits to take down as many trees and achieve as high a score as possible.

How To Play

To play you must ready your axe by pressing down on the SPACE key and chop down the tree by releasing the SPACE key. These actions must be timed accordingly.

The ready taking place on the beat of the stumps. Stump.PNG And the swipes being timed with the beat of the trees. Tree.PNG

Thanks for playing :)

Note:

VERY SORRY TO ALL WHO TRIED PLAYING THE GAME

This recent update is as a result of my idiocy during my sleep deprived state. I somehow managed to upload a build for the completely wrong game and as a result the game didn't work. This is now fixed and the only change I made was fixing a massive bug that existed making the game unplayable.

I think you only provided a link to the source code, but not a packaged game. Sorry if I'm missing something.

Looks to me like this is supposed to be hosted online, and doesn't want to run off my PC directly. I got the following error:

Please @ me in a response if you remedy this, and I'll happily give it a shot :)

@neandi @avareii @scarpex @flyingmobula Very sorry to you all and any others who were so kind as to try and test my game. After being up for 24+ hours to make the game, in my sleep deprived state I somehow managed to upload the wrong game. I even got the name of the game wrong and put "Cop" instead of "Chop"! This error has now been corrected and the game can now be played on my itch page.

The LD hosted version is not working with a 404 error. Make it work i want to play more rythm games :).

Its got a nice atmosphere and the music is nice.
I do wish more of it, as chopping trees starts to feel like my finger has become a metronome.

Great mood, the gameplay is a bit too trivial? Nice entry anyway!

A beautiful little game, very short but it feels well-rounded :)

I love the minimalistic color palette with the hazy background <3
And it feels almost meditative to play, great mood!

I would have loved a bit more variety in the rhythm, maybe more levels with different rhythms?

Awesome sound effects and mood!
The gameplay didn't change at all, it was always the same input at the same time.

Nice scroll background graphic and comfort BGM. Peaceful!

Very nice game. I liked the minimalist colour scheme and the parallax scrolling implementation, and the music matched it well.

As people have said above, it would have been cool to have more varied beats, e.g. syncopated rhythms over the top of the chill music. Additionally, the rhythm of the trees isn't quite synched up with the BPM of the song, and wraps around every so often.

Would love to see more of this down the track, it's a solid start and a good effort!

I've got a weird desync issue in the middle of the run, not sure if that's part of the game or just random thing. Impressive art and music for 24 hours!

Nice little game, and with such good music and visuals it's a truly impressive result for the 24 hours. It felt quite nice at first, because the rhythm of the music was in sync with the trees, but after a while it felt like it got out of sync somehow and it felt like the proper time for the beat was somewhere near a stump and not near the tree.
I also wished to have some extra action to do when I was going past the stumps or maybe some beats sequence alteration, because otherwise just hitting spacebar every second starts feeling a bit too repetitive and sparse after awhile.
But it was still quite a pleasant experience.

Really beautiful game! The aesthetics and music are both awesome! This would also make such a relaxing background/wallpaper :)

The music, the graphics and the atmosphere makes it all very fun for at least a couple of minutes, which is already very impressive given the repetitiveness of the gameplay loop
Good job!

The graphics is nice, I really dig it. But the gameplay is repetitive, it would have needed more variation both with the beat and the placement of the trees.

We liked the graphics and the mood! :) I got tired of the same pattern very quickly though. On my laptop, the trees and the music were out of sync, which didn't feel great.

For something you made in 24 hours, it already has some good ideas! I wish the game gave you more feedback on whether you timed your hits right, otherwise it looks like you can just press space for every item and still get the same score. At some point I think the tree and stump beats were swapped (stump on snap, tree on beat), but it went back to normal later (tree on snap :fingers_crossed:). It would be nice to see more variety in the level too.

I liked the fact that the game says "Chop to the Bop", which is the opposite of the real title, haha.

Damn. You really have graphics down in your skill set don't you :P

This is a really cool game. Playing it constantly thinking its a mix between Guitar hero and the Chrome dino game.

The art style is just beautiful. It really is amazing.

I do like the FX when you time it correctly too.

nice job! :)

Visually the game looks great (except the player figure 🤔). But I don't understand the gameplay I get points whenever I hit the spacebar.
