Unhappy Beaver by Zidoolan

[raw]
made by Zidoolan for Ludum Dare 52 (JAM)

My first Ludlum Dare jam and only the third game jam I've participated in. I was joined by a game jam newbie so we're pretty happy to get something entered!

They came for her twigs. She'll fight for her home.

You've spent all week building a dam and then the salmon and water rats decide to harvest parts of it. Little do they know a chemical spill in the river gave you teeth that could fire lasers.

Stop the naughty animals. Shoot them with your laser teeth before they can cross the river and destroy your dam. Don't touch them or you'll get damage. Fight off the animals for as long as you can. The Eagle drops bonus points, health and dam replenishments.

Play on itch.io

Controls:

Game controller only. (Sorry. I ran out of time) Left thumb stick moves you. Right thumb stick turns/aims. Left Shoulder/Right Shoulder/A button (B on Switch controller) fires lasers.

I was surprised about the controller only input...but luckily i have one :D
The voices are hilarious! Love them!
One thing i would have changed would be shoot with the right trigger, like in other shooting games.

Glad I still had the old 360 controller in the desk drawer :]

Cute game! The controls on the controller work and feel great. I do agree with the other comment that right trigger would have been a nice option. The concept works well with trying to balance your own health while trying to preserve the dam. There's also some very funny voice lines here. When I was shooting a lot of enemies at once, they could get a bit overwhelming though with all the overlap. It may be helpful if they only occur with every second or third kill since they are funny and it'd be nice to properly hear them.

Why no mouse input though? ...looks fun!

No mouse and keyboard is my fault. Originally it was but I decided to use the newer Unity input system for controllers and then ran out of time to put mouse and keyboard in with the new system. Good point about using the shoulder triggers too. I wish I had another day lol. Thanks to everyone who has played so far.

Thanks folks for playing and rating the game! And thank you for all the feedback! This is the first time I have been involved in a game jam and honestly didn’t know how it would turn out!

And I guess just as a noob I just think it’s so cool to see this game we made!

Will totally take what we are learning and put it to use in the future!

A great little game, thankfully it works with my 8bitdo pro controller. A great effort from a first time game dev. Well done!

I love the sound design ahah. I did kill some canadian salmon :scream_cat:. All of it were pretty fun. I'm more of a mouse keyboard player but I had a controller. I'm a bit rusty with it and and it went great so i guess the controls are pretty on point :D Good job doing a game and I'll be glad to see your future submissions as well ! Keep going !

what xD. That was.. intense, even though as far as i could tell things randomly came from both directions in my mind they were running, grabbing sticks then running away!

Congrats on making your first / third game jam game! The game is very cute. The voice acting was funny, but as others have mentioned it can get a little overwhelming when lots of things are happening at once, making it hard to make out what some of the dialog lines are. Great stuff!

That was an experience! A classic "shmup" with some funny, albeit super distracting voice effects lol. While the game has humor, the gameplay itself was a bit simple and stiff. It was your first submission and you completed it in a weekend though! Kudos!

The voice line were a hilarious surprise. And the controls felt really solid using a controller.

Simple idea, but the game was quite fun. I really liked the voice lines. One suggestion would be to add visual cues when you or an enemy takes damage e.g. particles, health bar, etc. It helps the player notice when something impactful happens in-game. Congrats on your first entry!

I think if you made an update where you just add the alternate controls it would be totally fine. I'm going to return to this after I get access to controller (I know it's weird, I don't have it right now lol) In what little I did get to see I enjoyed the audio and hectic nature of the game.

Definitely would have been easier with mouse/keyboard with a point and shoot rotation on the mouse, but worked well enough on a controller.

Mob voices were great, do wish they were limited to one at a time, though, so I could understand them all. But I accept your apology, Canadian salmon.

I had trouble keeping track of when I took hits. I always died from my health, with a fairly healthy dam, and it always felt a bit out of nowhere when I hit the gameover screen.

Overall, needed a bit more polish, but a good foundation.

A funny little game, I think it would have been a little more intuitive to turn the character straight to where you are pointing the right stick, instead of using it to rotate your character, but that's just personal preference. I love the sound effects even though they were a little loud. I think that nobody would mind if you uploaded a post jam version that also supported another input. Overall what you have here is good, but as it was said before, a little more polish could go a long way!
