Five Finger Copper Shopper by Don Fouts

[raw]
made by Don Fouts for Ludum Dare 52 (JAM)

Story

2024, the distant future, in the outskirts of Detroit a young man ponders the next step toward self-fulfillment. Sylvester “Sly” Cobra stands astride the entrance of a nouveau riche housing development armed with nothing more than a Maddox hammer and a shopping cart dead set on making his fortune as an entrepreneur in the field of scrap metals. Guide Cobra as in his search for copper pipe. Choose which walls and appliances to bash to harvest the sweet, sweet copper within. Collect the pipes (be careful not to overload as you walk through – copper is heavy) and run it all back to the shopping cart outside. Once the door is broken an alarm goes off and the police will be on the scene within 60 seconds so move quickly. The more copper you harvest before the pigs arrive the more points you accrue, got it? So be the next J. D. Rockefeller, tear into that dry wall, and harvest those copper pipes!

How to play

Gather copper pipes from the house using your hammer (LMB). The more copper you pick up (E) the slower you will move. Sprinting (SHIFT) can help, but you can also deposit copper (G) into the shopping cart to lighten your load. You need to leave by interacting with the cart (E) before time runs out to get paid.

This looks like the start of a good gameplay loop once you start to realize where the best sources of copper are. While I was playing though, the character controls made me feel a bit dizzy (slidey movement and it was constantly rotating to the right) so I had to stop playing. Creative take on the theme!

I love how there are different endings. I got the ending for getting caught, not stealing anything, and getting away! I think there was an issue with throwing items though, as soon as I threw something I was no longer able to pick up any more copper for the rest of the run. Cool game though! My best score is 13 pounds.

Multiple endings, wooooot!!! :D I got all three - I don't know if there were more but I love that there were options! I did run into a bug at some point where I bashed the sink on the first door on the left in the hallway and I think it broke something - I could still smash stuff but couldn't pick it up. No biggie cuz the shopping cart let me leave and I got to be a 'good' person that time hahahaha. It worked fine all the other runs though, I'm not sure what I did differently.

For what it's worth, I saw in a comment above there was an endless rotation bug - that didn't happen for me, it worked fine - I had it fullscreened on Firefox, for reference.

Just wanted to come back and note that the rotating bug I ran into was only in Firefox non-Fullscreen mode. I've since found the same thing in several other games, so either it's a Firefox thing or even an issue with my setup! Played this again and had a better time once that was solved. Even found the secret ending

@mcbombadev Thanks for coming back to provide that feedback. It's good to know that there are different experiences on different browsers. We noticed a difference in our build vs our editor so I think we'll need to give ourselves a little more time on the next one to test WebGL builds.

@nvrskipgameday Thanks for trying our game out! We noticed the 'unable to pick things up' bug on the last day and fixing it got scrapped for other priorities, haha. We're not 100% sure where the drift is coming from but it'll be something we keep in mind for our next entry.

@100th-coin Thanks for playing our game and we're glad you liked the multiple endings. That was actually a last minute decision on our part when we were trying to wrap things up on the last day.

Neat game! It seems that farming / plants was the obvious take on "Harvest", so I like how this one is thinking out of the box. Controls were a little difficult for me, and it would have been nice to have a pause menu to review them. But this seems like the start of something cool, nice job!

I ended up doing 4 runs of the game. I was very confused at first and kept getting the "you didn't steal anything ending," that's when I realized I was supposed to throw the copper inside of the shopping cart. After I realized that I realized how exactly the game worked. Unfortunately, my ability to pick up items seemed to have stop working after I threw one item in? That's how I ended up with this result, lol!

This was a good game, well-made all around. The controls/movement could use a bit of work I think, it feels a bit floaty sometimes. I could definitely see this being expanded into something more, good work!

I gave this quite a few goes.
It was pretty fun!
I did have fun running around destroying everything :D

I think if you were to expand it to have upgrades (Carry more, longer time) then it could really go for a published game I think. Different houses, different stuff.
a fun little one.

Great game :)

Loved it. This is one of the few games on the list that actually made me think "wow, I would never have come up with this interpretation of the theme". The movement was a bit unpolished, but otherwise, all of the mechanics you added worked really well together, like the way you moved slower with more materials. Overall, great game. The only bug that I encountered is that if you push them vertically, you can push boxes through the floor, so you might want to look into that.

Amazing! This is exactly the type of game I want to play for Ludum Dare! I love your style.

This feels fun to play and very straightforward but i struggle to see how this fits the theme given that one of the other suggested themes was salvage and this feels more in that area. Regardless, Quite fun to play and polished. Congrats!

It's fun to play, but I get some bugs. After I collect pipes to the cart - you can't pick up any more pipes. And another one - timer disappears after level restart. But anyway, good work.

The game seemed to think I stole no copper... Although I thought I stole 7? Fun physics, I would have liked to see a slightly bigger level maybe or have it more randomized each time you play?

I got the good ending but to be fair I did ruin their front door for no reason so I'm not exactly a peach.

Fun concept! Most I'd just say be a bit more forgiving on the timer, or have other places to steal from but of course that's about time that I am sure you didn't have, heh.

Maybe the best way to interpret the theme I've run into thus far
Extremely good idea but sadly I was unable to pick up most of the copper I managed to harvest from the house. Even when carrying 0 copper I wasn't able to pick stuff up. But letting that slide this was a really solid entry!

"Good ending - you choose not to steal" oh thank god I'm not a bad person. Wait what about all the copper I just stole? and the damage I did to the house? Confused about this ending lol. A funny concept; I didn't think I would find a LD game about stealing copper pipes directly out of peoples walls but here it is. A fun game, nice job!
