Hustle Harvest by plexsoup

[raw]
made by plexsoup for Ludum Dare 52 (JAM)

An unfinished musical toy, made for Ludum Dare 52.

The original intention was to create a fully-fledged card game with crafting mechanics and factory automation, a bit like Slay the Spire meets Factorio or Timbertown. Unfortunately, that original scope proved to be too ambitious for me, so near the last minute I pivoted into a musical toy.

Place nodes in the graph to play notes when they get a pulse. Much like any wiring network graph diagram.

Toggle buttons on the nodes to adjust pitch and tempo.

See if you can make ANY money. graphNetwork.png

If the embedded web browser version doesn't work for you, try another web browser, or try the itch.io page: https://plexsoup.itch.io/hustle-harvest

Didn't understand Andy's function there, nothing seemed to accept Labor as an input. Clever game, not sure how it fits with the theme.

Thanks for playing. Andy was a side effect of not-enough-time syndrome. Originally he was intended to slot into other cards as an accelerator, but I never got that functionality working, so now he's just another source of audio for the dynamic music generator. I had big dreams of a whole ecosystem of cards interacting with each other, but it didn't happen in the allotted time.

Very neat idea, I'm sad that you didn't get the time to finish your orriginal vision, this flowchart centered kind of logistics game seems neat

Cool idea. Definitly could be really cool with a little bit more nodes and work.

Hello fellow dreamer! I really empathize with the "overly ambitious idea" struggle. These jams are just about as much as design and scoping as they are development. It's tough!

That said, good effort, and great job getting _something_ uploaded. That's a success! This was fun to tinker with, even if the options were limited. The node graph is a good framework for that resource production genre!

By the way, I found that the scroll wheel (scrolling, not middle button clicking) on the left bar auto drags everything to the node graph!

This could be the base for a full game, but right now is very confusing.

Is good that it kind of play some tune, but is not intuitive how to sync up the sounds. Nice idea

Cool idea, but I didn't understand how it summary works and I don't really like the music there + it would be better if items when you choose will spwan when I want, not in the center
But I know that u know all these things:)
But good choice mechanic, cool idea with connections, it's great that u give the goal to a player, good job!

WoW, great concept of blueprint game style.

Nicely done! I know you didn't get to implement everything you wanted, but what's here definitely shows a lot of effort. I love your StS-meets-Factorio idea and I'd really like to check out a future version if you add more to this one!

I love the idea! The pieces that are available are very well done and clean. Can't wait to see future iterations!

Very interesting game. I liked playing around with these cards and getting some sounds and money. Even if I am still not exactly sure what I was doing.

Beautiful and relax game. I had some animal crossing vibes. Prob. a map would have been helpful to better know where I am and that I can better come home.

Cool concept, I'd love to see it fleshed out, maybe sync the nodes randomness so they always produce something that a little more on-key.

@tpunisher33 Hmm. I tried to make them exactly on pitch and time, starting with A440 and using specific pitch increments, pitch_scale = [1.0, 1.122, 1.189, 1.335, 1.498, 1.682, 1.89]. Maybe I got the increments wrong. I need a better grounding in music theory, or some guidance from a music theory expert. Thanks for pointing out that it doesn't sound quite right.

Very interesting idea. I have played for a while, but still dont understand how can i make money and why some behaviour would get punishment.

Really do like the concept, shame I have no musical talent...
Looks like a lot of the planned elements did not make it into the final game, but I can see how it would have worked nicely.

@yichenfeng Yeah. In hindsight, charging money for making connections was a dumb idea. It was a holdover from a previous design concept where the player would start out by collecting spawned object litter and deliver them to their destinations manually. Then the wired connections were supposed to be a big upgrade. (like conveyor belts in factorio). Thanks for playing!

Congratz of participating!
I see the potential! Next time lower the scope and you will manage to finish for sure! :)
See ya on the next one!

@plexsoup Sorry for the late response, I might have a bad ear for the pitch, some of it sounded off to me, but that might also be a limitation of the accuracy of the Godot pitch shifting engine (which I wouldn't rely on for a full release) and absolutely no fault of yours.

But actually what I was trying to suggest (poorly in hindsight) was that the nodes should communicate together so they are aware of the sounds each-other is making and produce less random and more "semi-random" sounds that follow standard chord progressions. Imagine if you placed two similar nodes near each other and instead of playing randomly selected pitches they selected pitches such that they from a chord together. Anyway, I don't want to derail any creative intentions you have, you've clearly got a great image for this game already in mind

@tpunisher33 Thanks for the feedback. I agree 100%. Maybe one day I'll learn a bit about standard chord progressions. :)

I had a rough time understanding how to get this to work, probably a me issue.

I do really like the idea of building a life flow chart, though...kind reminded me of cult simulator?
