Shroom To Grow by sourcehorse

[raw]
made by sourcehorse for Ludum Dare 52 (JAM)

You've spent far too many years on this damned mushroom planet and it's nearly time to blast off into the freedom of the stars. You've engineered a rocket-shroom (patent pending) to take you away, but first you need to charge it up with an appropriate fuel. Feed enough fuel mushrooms to the rocket-shroom so you can blast off, but watch out for the hungry neighbors.

  • Your ship emits a mushroom-friendly light that seems to promote growth, bringing the wild mushrooms closer will help those grow too.
  • The bigger your ship is, the brighter its light will shine.
  • The brighter the ship light shines, the more attention you'll draw from invading slugs.
  • Use 'E' to harvest mushrooms, and 'E' again to re-plant them or fuel your ship (Use the wrong fuel and it will have the opposite of the intended effect)
  • Use 'V' to push away the slugs from invading.
  • Fuel mushrooms can double as distractions for slugs if you leave them in the ground
  • Wild mushrooms have adapted to defend themselves from the slugs
  • Build your defenses strong enough to survive until you are ready to flee the planet

I was having performance issues whenever the ground of the basin was on screen. If I looked up, I got smooth framerates again. Other than that, fun game! I like the feedback loop of plant shrooms -> grow more shrooms -> plant more shrooms, and I also really like the choice between using mushrooms as fuel or spreading them out as defenses.

Aside from the hard-to-read font choice for the instructions, the game has a really nice game loop and an innovating idea for the Tower-Defense system. I like the idea where players need to constantly find the balance between growing your Shroom ship while fending off the slugs as they get fiercer. Really satisfying when getting all the shooting shrooms surrounding the ship. Great job!

I realy liked the principe of collecting mushrooms improve your spaceship
However, the game is maybe a bit boring during the first phase, when you only have to collect and use mushrooms

First I thought the slugs were chillin neat my ship, then I understood the were eating it : some extra anim/audio /visual feedback to understand that you are taking damages, as I'm not always checking the size of the shwoom-ship. Nice game overall, I hate that damn slugs haha! Well done

You did a good job.
I like the mushrooms! :D

The affect of the mushrooms around the ship is really well done.
And the gameplay does pickup.

Nice work :)

I liked the discovery of the mushroom types. Also, I found the mood really well done. The choices of the light, the fact you are in center of a crater and the music, all of this contribute to do strong atmosphere.

Maybe the shooting sound is too much present (especially when you have a lot of turrets).
I think you can add more international binding for moving and add controls to mouse !
