Crops on fire by Richard Jedlicka

[raw]
made by Richard Jedlicka for Ludum Dare 52 (JAM)

screenshot.png

You are a harvester combine driver and your field of wheat is on fire. Try to cut off the fire by cropping the wheat to prevent it from spreading and save as much crops as you can. Avoid riding over fire it damages your harvester, but it will stop the fire too.

💪 Try to reach 40% on Hell difficulty. 😈

You can use keyboard arrows or gamepad (left trigger to accelerate, right trigger to break, left stick to steer).

I recommend fullscreen (the expand button below the game view) for web embeded version, otherwise it is too small.

* It seem it doesn't work in Firefox, Chrome should be fine. *

Everything is made from scratch except: - the font: https://www.fontspace.com/pixeloid-font-f69232 - the driving algorithm was heavily inspired by: http://y2u.be/DVHcOS1E5OQ

Unfortunately no audio (didn’t have enough time).

This was quite hard development. Most of the time I was fighting with Unity instead of building the game, experience gained though.

Tools used: - Unity - Aseprite - PureRef - VS Code

Really nice twist on the harvesting/harvester concept!

Suprisingly fun little game! Hardest difficulty was definitely "Hell" as you had named it. Only managed to save 37% on my best attempt. I think this was pretty good use of the theme overall.

Great game I really enjoyed it. I did find the steering a bit difficult but other then that I enjoyed everything about this game

@tutti-ankka 37% is quite good 👍

@rustynoob yeah, driving combine in high speed is not easy 😄

Amazing game, I spent the most time playing your game. Drive model feels really good and the difficulty is well selected for each level and the Hell is really nice challange, manage to harvest 34%.

Neat idea! Trying to figure out the best strategy to save as much field as possible was fun, especially on the higher difficulties. It's great how hectic things get when the fire starts spreading out of control. I do wish it gave me some sort of grade so I know how well I did; seems like it always says "victory" so long as you don't die. But, overall, a pretty enjoyable entry. Nice work!

surprisingly fun little game. Also very hard ;-;

The first thing I thought to myself when seeing the game was imagining an angry guy commiting arson in the dead of night yelling "Liar Liar Crops on Fire". Just the testament of my awful sense of humor I guess xDDD

Also I saw your blogpost when the game was in development where you created the hellbringer combine, and I just wanna say that i you ever update it, please add it as an easter egg or another difficulty lmao.

@daxic I should mention the driving algorithm was inpired a lot from youtube, more info in the description.

@truechips Haha, a group of arsonists running, hiding in the fields and randomly starting a fire was my first idea :D Unfortunately I didn't manage to fully implement it.

The hell rider as an ester egg seems funny :D Or it might be the Hell defficulty.

@superpokeunicorn Yeah, some sort of grade would be nice addition, I can hire you as level grader to create some reference :D

Cool game. The controls feel just right and it looks amazing. After 86% percent on hard, I guess now I still have to get a decent score in Hell :D
And btw: I first thought I was clever and just ran through the fire, only to figure out on the 3rd fire that there is actual damage :D Otherwise I would have had at least one point to criticize

The wheat and fire look really good. It's fun to play, but way too hard for me to control. I always end up driving into the fire.

@noskro Yeah do not play with fire :D ... The difficulties are not actually well balanced, but the Hell is real challenge.

5/5 design. Great job, elegant. You should be proud, this is a clever game, I wish I made it.

Fun game, Wow is Hell mode ever hard, but in a fun way. I like the graphics, the controls are perfect in my opinion, it feels clunky because combines ARE clunky, totally perfect. Great game!

Managed to get 22% in Hell Mode. I love hom simple it is but it really is addictive. I think if this had leaderboards it would be really fun to compete for the highest score!

This was a fun idea! I think I would have liked a little less squirrely control, as I overshot my turns quite regularly. Sure it was challenging, but it was a bit more frustrating.

I managed to get 48% on "Hell" by trying a few strategies. Definitely tough!!! @richard-jedlicka YOU'RE ON BUD :D

Oh, and I definitely felt "spent most of the time fighting with Unity" ... I have felt this in pretty much every Jam. But you know what? It gets easier. I think these last couple of times, I felt a lot more confidence. So stick with it!

@hawkin Congrats, great result! I understand the controls are not perfect the thing is the pivotal point of the harvester is in the front, but yes you the steer factor is the same despite the speed which might feel a bit unstable. I'm not sure how it would behave in reality, but I've never seen any harvester driving this speed 😀.

And to fighting with unity, yeah I'm sure I'll get better in this, I already have some experience with it so it could have been much worse 😅

I find it impressive how you managed to add multiple difficulty options in such a short amount of time. Strong concept, was fun going through it as it got more tricky. Mini map is also a great idea for something like this

What a delight! Plays very smoothly, and the concept is very fresh too. Some audio could do it wonders, but it's still one of the most memorable and fun games I've played this jam, congrats!

I managed to do 100/97/84 percents on easy/normal/hard (ramming the fire before it spreads is imba), hell was a bit too stressful to finish for me.

I love it! Also woo another person who made a game with a combine harvester in it :D Drifting around in the harvester, cutting tracks around the fire so that it could not spread to all your crops like some kind of overpowered firefighter is very enjoyable indeed.

A little sound would definitely add to the experience, like hearing the crackling of the fire as you drift past in your tuned up harvester! The minimap was a really great addition too, and it's really satisfying seeing the tracks you've drawn in your field!

Honestly wish I'd leaned more into the "harvester go fast" bit given this game, nice work!

Managed to get 88 % on Hard

Interesting little game. It's a fun core mechanic that I wish you were able to do a little more with, but I definitely sympathize with you for running out of time. I cut more features than I implemented, including sound.

I originally chose the Normal difficulty, beat it in about 20 seconds, and then was ready to criticize the game for its length. But then I noticed that the difficulty settings are actually distinctly different levels that use the same mechanics, rather than the same level with difficulty ramped up or down. What you really should have done is split the game into levels. Then your average reviewer would get more playtime out of the same content.

Solid entry. I enjoyed it.

Really cool concept! Haven't seen a firefighting game like this one before. The driving is physics are also tough in just the right way. What I would have loved is more variety in level design. Having levels with obstacles to avoid or puzzle-y solutions would have been really cool.

Thank you all for a positive feedback. I was a bit concerned about the result after the submission. So I'm happy to hear it turned out well. 😊

@ditam Yeah I definitely wanted to add audio, but did not manage to do it in time. Ramming the fire before it spreads is not imba imho, it is good part of the strategy especially in Hell difficulty. But I see the easier levels are not well balanced.

@profan Yeah fire cracking sounds, I had exactly this on my plan.

@justin-c Splitting game into levels with different difficulties might be good, but because of the short time I'm glad I added at least the more variants than one.

@lila-pause Yes, obstacles would be great addition to the game I would do it if I had more time.

First thing I did was drive into the massive fire and die, 10/10 would play again.

Really cool game tho, fun trying to figure out best routes and fastest way to stop the fire from burning all the wheat. Good job.

Good job with the game. It was surprisingly satisfying to drive through the wheat field and I liked the hectic nature of the game as the level went on. The controls felt a bit too sensitive to me personally but still manageable. I also enjoyed the option to sacrifice some of your harvester's health to put out fires as it added a bit of extra strategy. Nicely done.

Really nice concept! I'm pleased that my immediate instinct to try to encircle each fire before it spreads was exactly what I needed to do. It's pretty satisfying when you can get your "racing curve" so to speak to be as tight around the fire as possible without getting too much damage.

I appreciate the fact that there's no penalty for taking damage, since it encourages the player to actually use HP as a resource, since taking damage without dying actually helps you save more of your crop from burning.

easy - 94%
medium - 87%
hard - 81%
hell - 28% :sob:

Really cool. Well-scoped for a 48-hour jam, keeping it simple let you add a lot of cool polish/quality of life stuff! Love the minimap especially as well as the different difficulty levels. Controls feel appropriately snappy yet the right amount of awkward for this type of game :p

Awesome game! Really nice game concept, only thing is some hype music :) Also, how on Earth anyone could get 40% on Hell XD Maybe a variant with random starting points to fire, would be nice... Anyway, good job with the game.
