CropsnTowers by JackRoxton

[raw]
made by JackRoxton for Ludum Dare 52 (COMPO)

Here's my game for compo : CropsnTowers a tower defense - farming minigame. I sadly didn't make assets for everything and they are kinda ugly but I still am proud of what I have done for a casual compo game jam. Thank god beepbox, sfxr and pixilart for easy to use tools for musics and assets. Feel free to criticize as much as you want, be harsh but constructive please !

First of all, congrats on making it on time! Secondly, I like how you welcome constructive critisism. While I was playing this game I did feel like it wasn't as engaging as I would've liked it to be. The idea itself is great actually, I just think it needs more variety. As it is now, the only engaging part is picking where to place your towers, but the act of earning money by placing the wheat in the box could've just as well have been automated. I think adding something on the harvesting side of things would have improved the experience greatly. For example, what if mice tried carrying off the wheat and you had to swat them away? Just something to add another layer of interactivity.

Well done on making simple repetitive music that is catchy but doesn't make me lose the will to live. I felt a little bit out of the loop, maybe if the field was a grid of 9 fields where I could drag seeds of different types with different growth speeds for different payouts.

Adding another mechanic to juggle with the tower defense game is an interesting direction to explore! Maybe it'd be fun to have the two sides of the game connect more, for instance the turrets could have dual farming and defense purposes and there'd be tradeoffs between money production and defending the road.

I think also progress bars for the wheat and for the fire rate of turrets would be a nice add.

Overall the game was fun though, and the few assets did their job well.

I like the idea and I had fun trying the game. It could perhaps have used a bit more gameplay, but what is here works pretty well. Well done.

thanks jakobthequizguy ! you're right the game lacks something to make it engaging since it doesn't even have tower upgrades or tower variety like usual tower defense games such as bloons or kingdom rush that I love. I think I'll try to do a TD game again in a future jam but I will try to focus more on gameplay.

thanks scilly-guy ! yes that's a good idea to add interactivity to the game and right on the theme ! to be honest I should have thought a bit more about the theme it didn't inspire me that much so I just went with it

Nice, another tower defense game! :D

Could use a bit more variety in the gameplay, it's pretty linear as-is, with the only real choice being when to buy the 110 cost big boi. The farming is just an extra step for passive income. It would be neat to tie in some mechanic to sacrifice tower spots for more income, for instance. And of course, more build variety :D

Still, a solid entry, good job!

Good jog making a game in 48 hr. There is some good potential in your game, its would be nice have a little more challenge on the enemy's, they die to easy by the end, you could have done so they life grow as game time goes by, but great job nonetheless.

I enjoyed your game! Only potential downside for me is the music which can get a tad annoying :joy:

I feel there's a lot of potential to a split-screen TD game, for example the tasks to perform in the left window could get more and more complex, requiring either more aim skills and/or some basic puzzle solving. In addition, waves could become more intense and tower placement more "spammy" (basically you'd have to build/upgrade a lot of stuff in order not to leak any ennemies). Then the game would be an interesting multitasking challenge!

But tbh the gameplay felt great to me and I had fun, well done!!

Interesting take on a tower defense! Just would have liked more with regards to the multitasking; felt like I was more waiting for the wheat to spawn, than managing my time. If the wheat rotted away after some time, along with a planting mechanic like @scilly-guy mentioned, may make for a very hectic experience!

The assets that you did make turned out pretty okay. The road, bin, and wheat were pretty decent, actually. Music was repetitive, but was a fine little diddy.

Also I played this in a sandbox (as I do with all downloaded games, just in case), and I noticed the win screen lettering is a little wonky on different resolutions.
Here are some screenshots.

Maybe this was just a result of how I was running he game, but if not, I think this may be something Canvas Scaler's UI Scale Mode could fix. I usually use "Scale With Screen Size" and "Expand" for the Screen match mode. But this could very well just be user error on my part due to how I ran the game and you were already using a scaler mode other than the default constant size scalers.

All in all, pretty nice. Fun idea with a good gameplay core. If you decide to continue developing, I would be interested to see where you take it. Might make for an fun little mobile game too!
