Forked Up by Paroxysmal
Welcome to Forked Up. A game about forking up, I mean harvesting items to upgrade your fork and create the key to the super secret chest.
Gather plants, kill things and harvest their resources to take back to the shop to craft better stuff. Be careful though, if you die in the field you will lose half of what you've harvested.
Weight the risk of keep going or go back to the shop for a health potion. Each time you leave the shop it is a new day, and new consequences to loitering.
Controller is highly recommended. Keyboard controls: Esc - Quit game Alt-Enter - Go to game window Arrow key - move; Ctrl - Attack; Space - Jump; Enter - Confirm shop item; LShift - Close the shop
NOTE keys listed in game are for controllers, LShift is the B button.
You can also move with WASD and use Mouse button 1 to attack.
Built with Godot, Aseprite, Gimp, Affinity Design, BFXR, Audacity

(I was not able to play with a controller but with keyboard it is fine).
IMO the later upgrades cost too much resources.
I think a good soundtrack as background would improve the game a long way.
Overall a nice entry.
Although, thinking about it, the shrub hit sound would probably keep me awake all night too. lol
Also, I can't find B on my keyboard. Had to plug in my controller to make it work.
@ivorius Thanks. All the button call out in the game are for controllers and don't reflect a keyboard key.
I find the font kinda hard to read and the prices felt a bit high. Other than that I have not much to say.
Congratulations.
was a fun game. managed to get stuck on revive :D
Great work overall!
Nice game and really a good implementation of the theme.
The prices were too high tho, and resulted in a repetitive gameplay.
beautiful game, well done!
Sounds and gamefeel could be polished more.
Nice work!
- I might be biased as someone who loves these sort of palettes, but I LOVE the graphics. Brings me right back to the device I grew up with, they're well done, do what they need to do, and are simple amazing, great job!
- The audio, totally great, too! I miss a little bit of music, which I assume you might've been able to add if it wasn't for a COMPO, so I can let this one slide haha. The sound effects were chef's kiss.
- The gameplay was simple, responsive, and very smooth, not much to add here!
I did feel like it became a little bit of a grind and for some reason my head couldn't wrap around the "Items I own" vs "Required". I wonder if it would've been better to show what I was missing as well?
It did take me a second to figure out what to do, I had a controller connected so I don't know if that altered the "How to play" screen, showing what keys to press, but I was actually playing on a keyboard, a bit confused pressing my A, b, and x buttons haha.
Great submission, thank you so much!
#### Some minor gameplay feedback:
Got initially stuck in the instructions menu on the itchio page:

Had to re-load as I wasnt able to exit out -- maybe because i was pressing the wrong exit button?
Same issue with the shop.
Had a situation where the player character kept moving towards the right (even after I stopped pressing right on the keyboard), but this stopped once i fell into the pit.
I like going back out and exploring more of the world as I obtain items to unblock obstacles, but it feels like I have to grind the same region at least twice between every upgrade. Reducing item costs would be nice for showcasing a game jam entry.
Nice graphics, I like that Gameboy palette and this pixeling is about as good as it gets with the limitations of GB.
Icons in UI for Upgrades are so small and look the same (also because of the color), so it's very hard to understand when you have enough of what resource (I'm player, I don't wanna think, game should help me with that :))
Idea with grinding and gathering resources to get upgrades is not new, but still very good one! Although the combat system is not very pleasant with controls, but needs a lot of polishing to be enjoyable and not frustrating. Also it's pretty easy to get 4-shotted in 1 seconds, since the invincibility time is very low.
Pixel-art texts is understandable desisiton, but really not the best way to give information with such a font (It's really hard to read anything).
I liked the graphics and the idea. Although some of the stuff will need a lot of polishing and playtesting if you decide to make it as full game. Still like this submission, good job!
P.S. I played with Xbox Controller.
Graphics are great.
Got stuck early on is there a double jump or climbing ability I missed?
Regardless, very nicely done!
