URSA MAIOR by ekaktusz
This game is about the alternate story of the Ursa Maior star constellation. It was made by @ekaktusz, @Zahkros and @bartalomew in PICO-8. Have fun, and discover an alternate mythological history!

Once upon a time, in a forest far, far away, there was a bear who loved nothing more than to eat. She would spend all day and night searching for food, gobbling up berries, fish, and anything else she could harvest.
As the years went by, the bear became more and more ravenous. She ate all the berries in the forest, then all the fish in the rivers and streams. Next, she turned her attention to the trees, devouring every last leaf and branch.
But still, the bear was not satisfied. She wanted more, and so she set her sights on bigger prey. She climbed to the top of the highest mountain and ate it all, leaving nothing behind but a barren peak.
Finally, the bear's hunger knew no bounds. She looked up at the night sky and saw the planets, shimmering and inviting. Without hesitation, she began to eat them one by one, swallowing each one whole.
And so it was that the bear became the Ursa Maior, the great bear of the sky, her belly filled with all the wonders of the universe she did harvest.

Games that are made on Pico8 are my personal favorite of this jam.
Well done! I didn't expect this ending...
F Pressers pay you respect!
The story telling was present without being overwhelming. The level design was perfect, as the story evolved well with it. And the graphics simple, clear and cute !!
I still noticed a "bug", When Ursa grew bigger in space her hitbox don't grew the same way and cause me to miss some planets (but a really minor issue !).
Great job !
My only suggestion would be to take a look at the bear's hitbox, as I was getting some strange collisions with the trees in the early stages, and was having trouble actually connecting with the planets at the very end.

Most of the textures/sprites are nice, although you could make a better work with sprite layers (and colliders, but I already mentioned that).

Solid story rounds out the great art and sound! Had fun playing it :D
Cute bear,delicious planet:)
Once up in space, I got lost for a bit without being able to find planets. It seemed like you had probably predetermined their locations, and I just happened to fly out of their field. Fortunately, I was able to wander back to it and eat the one or two final unfortunate morsels to achieve my final form :)
Great experience!
thank you for your support, really glad you enjoyed this little narrative story!
@fromage it shouldn't be an excuse, but tbf english is our second language and we didn't have time to proof read the story with a native speaker during the 72h jam. nonetheless thanks for the feedback and the positive words!
@kastaff @ferelily @porcus-pie we tested the hitbox growth but it made the planet consuming super fast and we wanted to keep the pace to have the players some time to float around, so it was a deliberate choice at the end. thank you for the feedback and the love for the game!
@danmerey thanks for the feedback, we tried our best with figuring out the layering issues and hopefully with some more time we can polish it. glad you enjoyed the animations and this pico game!
_______________
anyways we'd like to show our appretiation for all of you guys and your feedback with this unofficial free Kratos skin! thanks, what a great jam LD is!

the moment where you can eat trees and mountains is excellent!
Wow, this was a lovely, lovely game! It made me sincerely laugh out loud! I really liked the surprises, and how the game changes from one stage to the next!
Two very minor things:
- You might want to add a delay after showing text, preventing button presses for half a second or so - I missed some text boxes in my first play because of that :-(
- Make the sound effects a bit louder (or the music a bit quieter?) sometimes I could not hear the sound effects over the music.
Great game!
The only "issue" I had (very minor) is that it becomes a bit difficult to control the bear once you go in space. Since the objects are behind the bear collecting them is a bit more difficult than it could be.
Great job!
➕great story and humor
➕simple but enjoyable gameplay
➕interesting interpretation of the theme
➖ too short on the "second phase" and too long on the "third"
Oh and the Itchio page is also tooooo cute!
