Evergreen 2 by JustMars

[raw]
made by JustMars for Ludum Dare 52 (JAM)

In Evergreen 2 you need to survive the harsh conditions set out by mother nature. Working against you is a dynamic day and season system bringing in difficult weather conditions and pitch-black darkness. Explore the remote valley, harvest and hunt, but do not get distracted by the nature as hunger is always knocking at the door.

Passage of time is simulated. Leaves fall, food rots, water freezes and seasons change.

fun little project, would recommend a web or pc/linux build!

@mynvs @ben-lusted the Windows build is now up! We were supposed to have it up sooner, but discovered that Unity's URP/Lit shader was broken when built on Windows vs what it looked like in editor (2021.3.16). We changed it to a custom Lit shader that looks identical and now it behaves as intended.

Hope you can give our game a try now :D

This was a very rich idea! The fact that there were seasons, and so much changed during them, made the world feel so dynamic. The weather, the music, the lighting, the water. I appreciated the thought you put into all of it! It feels like the foundation for a much longer game, with longer seasons and more to do. I would love to see you expand on gathering, such as to prepare for the harsh winter. I hoped the fires could be used for cooking, too, but it seemed like I was able to eat whole, raw deer ;)

A few other things I noticed:
* Some trees were placed at the bottom of a lake.
* When I picked up the knife (while holding the bow), it didn't equip. When I tried to drop it, it fell through the floor :(
* The arrows seemed to shoot a little right of the cursor.
* The pixelation was a cool, nostalgic effect, but the intensity of it made the game overall a little hard to read. Like, things not too far away from me were just a single pixel (or not visible at all), so I felt like I was "squinting" the whole time.

But seriously, this was still inspiring to play! I want to see more! Congratulations to the whole team!

Very cool feel and neat graphics, especially with the changing light and darkness and the seasons. I had no real trouble surviving, and eventually I just gave up, although it was fun to wander around and look for food. I found aiming the bow hard - it seemed not to be pointed at the crosshair and instead somewhere over to the right, following the path of the arrow. I also had a little trouble picking up and eating stuff, but I got used to that after a bit. Very neat music, also, and a fun survival vibe.

This looks and sounds absolutely fantastic and offers quite the big world to explore!
Unfortunately, there's just not much to do in this world (yet), but I could very well imagine it being filled with mystery and secrets and more interactions, the wonderfully atmospheric foundation is certainly there!
The change of season was a super nice touch, I tried walking on ice and was pleasantly surprised that you even implemented some sliding, super cool :)

Cool project, liked the seasons changing. Didn't really feel like survival since there was always enough food to eat and you could only carry one thing at the time. Did snipe a dear!

Great GFX! Interface is a bit different in renderstyle, but anyway, great work!

This really took me back… I quite enjoyed the retro charm of this game. Implementing a day-night cycle and seasons in this short amount of time is quite impressive. Almost feels like a short demo for a bigger game.

Not sure if I got all aspects of the game, though. For example: does the knife has a purpose? Is there a reason why apple and deer are displayed at the top of the screen? More inetractions with the world would have been nice. But there is only so much you can do in two-three days. Also, diagonal movement also felt weird.

Thanks for feedback @cobaltjt! Glad you found enjoyment in our game!

The knife near the cabin serves no gameplay purpose, we had plans for it at one point when we made the model, but ran out of time so we just threw it in as decoration. The apple and deer icons represent resources that spawn in the world, but yeah they are a bit unclear.

A really great entry! Love the graphics and the world. Sometimes it could be jarring between the movement speed from the arrow keys and the view speed with the mouse, but it just took some getting used to. Chasing apples was particularly funny, not sure why but I really enjoyed it.

A solid entry, great looking consistent visuals and great atmosphere merged with fun gameplay.. Has a big potential, maybe you can consider developing it further and releasing it. I would like to play it more! Great job in this short time! If you would like to shred some zombies in slowmo, be sure to check out my entry, I would love to hear your feedbacks!
