Revengetables by adam-gould

[raw]
made by adam-gould for Ludum Dare 52 (COMPO)

For too long, farmers have massacred the innocent vegetation of Ludum Farms. Now, with harvest season approaching, three brave heroes have decided that the harvest will reign no more. It's time for the veggies to get their revenge.

The game features a pretty concrete tutorial - you'll need your mouse, your keyboard, and your determination to play.

Version 1.0a (web build only) - The volume controls in the main menu now no longer overlap with the central part and obscure it when viewing in a very low resolution (such as inside the browser). - Added a "Reset Music" button to the main menu to act as a workaround for the bug where the music doesn't play if the app wasn't in focus when the game finished loading.

Please note: There can be some strange occasional issues in the web version with some of the UI popups (they don't have any text or buttons) - if you're being badly affected, I recommend the standalone version.

This game has more character than any other I've played this jam; the character voices and catch phrases are all top-notch! The voiced-over tutorial was nice, too.

I liked the idea of switching characters, although I sometimes felt stuck with one when I hadn't known what was coming next. There were also some things I didn't see coming (I died when I shot one of the red things the drones dropped and it shifted over to the right and landed on me), but overall I really enjoyed the experience, with some fun enemy variety and player control variety.

Thanks for a fun submission!

Amazing :o

Pretty much everything in this game feels refined and like it's been worked on for months rather than two days. I definitely had fun and enjoyed the voice lines and the cool personalities of the veggie characters haha

It was a bit frustrating to lose to a random tumbleweed when either too far left or right to be able to react to it or when I couldn't switch away from Carl at that moment - which would be fine if there were checkpoints or something, so you wouldn't have to start from the very beginning again. Or if you had more than one life :p

But, anyways, since the game was so cool and awesome I didn't actually mind all that much.

Oh yeah, and upon losing the sound kinda crashed, till you restarted.

I started playing this and I love the character voices. I lol'd when he (you?) said "Let's Brock and roll." But er, how do I switch characters? I want to meet my other vegetable friends but I just can't figure it out. I played the tutorial again and shot the targets for a while and nothing else happened. Let me know when you get a chance so I can finish playing and rate, please!

Loved the tutorial, loved the voice lines and the music and the general over the top action theme and puns. The main game itself isn't really what I was hoping for after how the tutorial set things up, which seemed to end abruptly, but given the time constraints it makes a lot of sense. It feels like I played a demo for a game. You should consider expanding on this game with some kind of story mode after the jam as the characters are interesting and the general game mechanics feel nice and it feels like there's a place in the world for these characters and this theme.

@spiritbeard Thank you very much! I had a lot of fun goofing out into my microphone and coming up with silly puns.

@mihkelroomet Aw shucks, that's kind of you! I tried to make enough of the game feel polished that it made up for the fact it doesn't really have much content in it. Checkpoints and lives would kind of work but if I added those lifelines it would be too obvious how short the game actually is - definitely a consequence of the 48 hour constraint! I am also aware there are some weird sound bugs in the WebGL version of the game, I think this is a consequence of the platform.

@kristinamay You can switch by using the number keys - 1 is Brock, 2 is Tom, and 3 is Carl (matching the order in the lower left corner of the screen).

@demogorgon Agreed - I was going to extend the tutorial and give it a proper "conclusion" but time was starting to creep up on me so I had to switch my focus to the main game. This is also why the main game itself is pretty short (I think it's just over a minute and a quarter assuming you don't die, which is why it's intentionally difficult).

Game is a lot of fun. Carl is my favourite character haha. The HTML builds seems to have some errors, when dying the dialog box is empty sometimes. The energy system reminds me of the old Power Rangers Zeo game. Really cool to have voice lines in the game! Cool compo overall!

@rhewid Thank you very much! Yeah, Carl is pretty powerful - the tumbleweed was added purely so that he wasn't just the best at all times. I am a bit disappointed that the HTML build is having issues with UI and sound, but at least nothing completely game breaking.

The challenge, characters, variety of enemies, voicelines - everything in couple is working out very well. 5/5!

Wow you really nailed the audio and humor! As someone who enjoys 80s B movies, the broccoli "high Iron Diet" line got a good chuckle out of me :)

One of the issues with sound (specifically the music not playing when you start the game) could be because of a thing the browser does where if the user doesn't interact with a page before the game tries to make a sound the browser blocks it.

You can fix it by not trying to play music until someone clicks the start button, or one of the music up and down buttons. Came up with my game as well.

Otherwise great entry! The puns were amazing and the voice acting was solid. The music was a jam. I don't think I could field any complaints.

Great entry! I loved all the different puns haha, I also had some plant related puns in my game. I don't know if it's intentional but I wasn't able to switch characters in the middle of a wave which made it hard to manage energy for the characters that could jump.

@phlip45 Ahh - thanks for that! I'll see about making an update soon to fix it.

@manchmalscott Thank you very much! You definitely should be able to switch mid-wave - the only restriction is that the character you're switching to needs to have full energy.

I love the tutorial xD! Good voice intonation giving epicity to the game! It's hard for me to change characters, I don't know why. The character is great, I would like to see him further developed in the future. Great game!

fun game. could have used a score/high score system. I loved the quips when changing characters, they were pretty funny!

I was surprised with one hit = death system at first but other than that, it was fun! I get the challenge from this game which is swapping vegetables to choose best one for the current challenge.

The idea of switching characters was interesting and the vegetable puns were pretty funny. I was a little dissapointed that the actual level was just one screen with enemies spawning in somehow. Also it could really do with some juicing up, it literally reminds me of the "before" part of the well known game feel talk from one of the guys from vlambeer. https://youtu.be/AJdEqssNZ-U Check it out if you haven't seen it, a lot of quick tips that make everything feel better for very little effort. Certainly feels like you put a lot of effort in with the voice acting and different music for different characters which is cool. Solid effort you just need to squeeze a bit more juice out of those vegetables :) Edit - also for me the music didn't play in web version even though the rest of the sound did, so had to download to hear the music.

I'm not usually one for voiceovers but the voiceovers here were hilarious. Shame about the UI bugs on web though! Impressive to pull this off in the compo though, I'd say :)

Wow, what a thorough entry!! The tutorial was really informative and well-paced. The mechanics were well-implemented, and great job including voice-over into your game! Our game did the same, and it's not easy to do on a tight schedule, so well done! :muscle: Speaking of sound, the music UI was excellent. Top-notch addition to an already good game. There was clearly a ton of effort and thought put into this game, so bravo all around!

Very different, very cool narrative, like animal revolution but now with vegetables, I liked it. I noticed sound control and effects, but that theme music was missing. The option to exit the tutorial to return to the main menu did not work. But the rest of the game ran absolutely, when the drones and straw start to appear, I was lost, these new elements engaged me, congratulations.

Damn so close to an amazing game!!! Adding some sort of score for us to reahce for would have elevated this entry so high! But since there is no score... sadly theres not much to strive to... unless im wrong? But i lll have to just add the voice acting is amazing and it deservers a 10/10!

Really impressed by this, you don't see many compo games with voice acting and multiple playable characters! well done!!

The voice acting was fantasic  And I love the characters you came up with! Two things you could consider to add to the gameplay:
* Give every enemy an health bar. This way the player gets immediate feedback if they are making any damage
* Give the player maybe 1 or 2 lives more

Cool entry (and also nice tutorial!)
