Harvesting Hustle by AngryRubberDucky

[raw]
made by AngryRubberDucky for Ludum Dare 52 (COMPO)

Make the most out of your limited space. How many sheep can you breed before they eat all of your crops?

Hint: Stepping on the crop prematurely will destroy it; Sheep will come to eat your crops so you need to scare them away; Every sheep will only eat once until they're satisfied, they will become hungry again after they mate with another sheep that ate; Final score is how many sheep you bred; Game ends once you run out of wheat.

W/A/S/D: Movement

Z/Ctrl/Spacebar: Plant crop

It took me a while to figure out what I'm supposed to do! Some more instructions would be nice. This is what I eventually figured out:
- The number at the top is how much wheat you are holding. When you are holding 0 and you have none planted, the game immediately ends.
- If you step on a planted wheat before it's fully matured, it is destroyed and you get nothing back.
- Every 5 seconds, you lose one wheat that you were holding.

Once I understood how to play, I had fun! I managed to get up to 30 sheep.

Those sheep are super cute :D
Really cool game, it took a bit to figure out what to do, but it comes to you quickly.

Cute little game! I was a bit confused with the game ending instantly when i repeatedly walked over my first crop, but figured it out. You get a long a way by sticking to the corners. Player control could be a bit more snappy. Nice voxel-style graphics.

For me it was easy to understand what to do. I didn't like that you were able to step on your crops. I think an indicator to know when a patch is ready to harvest would be great as well.

Graphics are on point. I think the footsteps are a little annoying after a while.

Nice entry!

Very cute game, but gameplay is incredibly confusing :D At first I had no idea what was happening. Then I realized that I have to keep the sheep away. Only THEN I realized that I actually want to let them eat Some of the crop :D Anyway, very simple but decently engaging. Nice entry.

Very cute graphics and sound! I was able to get up to 70 something wheat before I had the first baby sheep come, and it all came crashing down so fast after that lol. when were like 10 of them I figured they were pretty slow and passive when they had eaten, so I'd just plant the whole map full of wheat and try to out pace them. That did not work at all :P They ate everything about 15 seconds haha. Very fun, glad I played!

Cool and cute game with very nice graphics! It takes me some time to find in comments that I should not walk on my crop, but I made my little farming corner afterward (can't get many plants though, with sheeps and me walking on them).

Cute game! It took us a little while to figure out, but we really enjoyed it.

Tips for others: Make sure not to step on your own crops! I restarted about 10 times before I got anywhere, since I didn't realize I was killing my own crops.

Excellent little game, I had a lot of fun. Shame the scorecard at the end didn't work for me, I think I got to about 20 sheep?

Love the voxel graphics, and fun to see a fancade game in the jam! Took me a couple tries and had to read through these comments to see why the game was ending so soon, but once I figured it out it was very enjoyable!

My high score was 38.
Adorable game with a simple premise. It takes a couple of tries to get the hang of it but once you get it, it's fun.
I love the way the player waddles around, it adds to the aesthetic of the game.

A small funny game with very lovely art. The idea is simple, but well developed. Great job.

Lovely little game! Worked great on mobile, thanks for the suggestion. :)

Was a nice challenge keeping the sheep away while trying not to trample your own crops. The graphics suited the game nicely. Would make a fun full game for mobile

Very nice! I felt like I just played a little bit of Minecraft.

- Neat art and smooth animations. One of the best I've seen so far on The Compo submissions.
- Controlling with WASD and Z not so handy, probably adding alternative for Z would be nice (maybe you already have that alternative)
- Playing for ~2 minutes is fun, although after you get the idea the game becomes very boring and with no goal. Maybe dividing it into levels with some specific goals and additional mechanics could work better.
- Screenshotting in the end feels a bit cheesy and only confuses (since you don't say Game Over or anything like that), so I didn't understand what the game wants from me for some time

@danmerey Hello, thank you for playing and constructively critiquing my game. I love the idea of making levels for a game like this, I would definitely try pushing a mobile app like this if it does well in the scores.

As of right now, the engine this was made on generates the screenshot menu itself and that goes on by default for all games, it's one of the few downsides of creating with that engine. Last ludum dare featured a game with the name "Snek left" which has the exact same screenshot menu.

Bdw, Arrow keys and spacebar also work for alternative controls :p

The game is a nice concept well done and polished! I could see it working on a more complete game, with levels or waves. Very good!

Good job on the game. The graphics looked nice and I thought the dynamic of both wanting to keep the sheep away and wanting them to eat some of the wheat was cool. It did feel like the game tended to spiral out of control pretty quickly once you got a few sheep they could starting eating and multiplying very quickly. Overall nice game.

Hey, that was a pretty cool game, with a unique idea! It was fun to figure out how to keep the sheep away from my farm at the same time that I tried to increase their numbers. Fighting against an enemy that you make yourself is always a neat idea in games.

That said, I think that the game started to slow down and struggle around 10 sheep... maybe use a more lightweight platform in the future? I managed to get 16 sheep after a few tries.

Thank you for the game!

A cool game with a fun twist, as the score going up also ups the difficulty!! That's good!! My only wish that I could rebind some keys to different ones, I was my hand was hurting a bit after a while.

Has a bit of a slow start before it actually gets difficult, but nonetheless pretty fun and very well polished.

I liked this game a lot! At first I wasn't sure how it would become difficult, but as more and more sheep crowded onto the board, I realized it wasn't about trying to herd them away, but simply trying to have any space to plant at all :) The voxel art style is really appealing, and it's super polished for a Jam game. Great job!
