Soil and Toil by squimmy

[raw]
made by squimmy for Ludum Dare 52 (COMPO)

Simple game about planting crops and harvesting them.

The web build is buggy and doesn't seem to work at all in Firefox.

I highly recommend trying the native windows/mac/linux builds if at all possible.

If itch.io's downloader doesn't cooperate, the files are also available at http://www.squimmy.info/games/soil-and-toil/.

The mechanics are more addictive than I first assumed, highscore so far 39!

Nice little puzzle game. Easy to learn hard to master.

Fun game! Very clear system that requires clever planning with a little RNG.

A simple game, but also very nice and pleasant. If you figure out how to play, it's easy to score 113 food, and I realized that I can't even finish the game. Anyway great job and good polish.

I got 83! A nice little puzzle game, it has a very compelling "flow" to it once you get used to everything.

Nice little game. Simple to understand, fun to play, and overall well polished - even including music and sound effect volume sliders. The web version works fine for me, I haven't noticed anything buggy, only the font is a bit blurry when in fullscreen.

Very charming and addictive! I stopped once I reached 106 food :)
Was quite tricky getting started but once you have enough food going it becomes quite relaxing.

Very nice game! Maybe music loop could be longer. But overall very cool game!

I liked the game, getting through the start is a fun puzzle; but once you're no longer in danger of running out of food, it becomes a bit too easy.

Really neat idea! Addicting, it was fun to see how high of a score I could get.

This was so fun!! My goal eventually became to make one full mega corn combo lol - kept getting so close but just couldn't get that last corn xD

Would say one quality of life feature would be having a small alert that lets you know you when on your last turn -there were several times I had crops to harvest and got a game over because I forgot to pay attention to the counter lol. Anyway, I really enjoyed this! Well designed! Excellent work!! :D

himm i didn't expect a puzzle game. i dissagree with reviews that say add upgrades. the inclusion of volume button is super appricated. but really fun thank you for the game :)

This is a pretty cool little combo-based puzzle game! I scored 76. Might try again for a higher score :p I think the mechanics are pretty solid, so my main nitpicks are mostly interface-related -- in particular, it was very tempting to say "oh, I have two wheat, so I'll plant them both here" and click on two adjacent squares but actually it replaced the wheat I had selected with rice or something after the first click. I get why it does that, and I did figure it out eventually, but that did bite me a couple times at the beginning, lol.

Music could be a bit longer, but the sound effects were nice, and the separate sliders were very welcome there. Well done!

Thanks very much for playing! I'm glad you liked it :)

@zbugba:
Sorry! The game engine I used has pretty patchy HTML support right now. I'd like to be able to find the time release an improved version later and hopefully the engine will have better HTML support by then.

@likirus:
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it. I used a default font and I think it's displayed at a lower point-size than it really supports, so it looks blurry when up-scaled. If I update the game, I'll probably replace the font with a more pixel-art-friendly one, which should help with that.

@tildecat:
The music was pretty rushed, and I think it shows. But I'm glad you liked the game nonetheless!

@greenradiation, @tesseract, @sibi:
Thanks for playing! Once you reach more than about 30 food, you have enough leeway to play optimally and things get much easier. I wanted to add some kind of complication that starts making things trickier as the game goes on, but I didn't have time...

@lizelive:
The game has a problem with getting easier as it goes on, so you're right that an upgrade system is probably not a good idea, but I do want to add something that introduces more complexity as the game goes on.

@cassowary:
Thanks very much for playing! To be honest, I'm not 100% happy with the UI, myself. I tried out a few different designs and eventually had to settle for the least bad one. The game invites you to try and plan ahead but the UI works against that, so I'll need to think about how I can improve the UI to make that work.
