Adding sound would make it much more satisfying.
Is there a penalty in speed when you hit the edges of the screen?
Thanks @th1z! There is no penalty in speed when hitting the edges. I think it would have been less satisfying and would make it very luck based to reach the end of the run.
Good luck for the LD52 victory !
nice work :)
Indeed, increasing the width of the harvester increases the odds to collide with rocks. However, as your wheat gain is a function of your speed and the width of the harvester, if you don't do it I think you will gain wheat too slowly to buy the best upgrades. Moreover, this width also increases the odds to collect gas and, later on, speed boosts that, I think, are mandatory to reach the goal.
Regarding the upgrades, I did not want to add text in order for the game to be accessible to everyone… but I don't know if my iconography is really readable. Regarding the rocks, you have two upgrades: the first one (with a minus symbol) reduces the odds of rocks to appear and the second one (with down arrows) reduces the effect of the rocks. Moreover, the speed upgrade increases your max speed and, so, makes the rocks less effective (colliding with a rocks reduces your speed by a fixed value).
I was not expecting there to be an actual end. It felt like the type of hyper casual game where you're always just trying to get further and further with no ultimate goal than to be your previous best distance.
I felt like there was a bit of a dry spell for upgrades in the early game. I'd suggest balancing it so that there are a couple of upgrades you can get easily within one or two runs in order to make the first time experience feel more impactful.
Great work for the 48h time line!
At the start I wasn't sure whether it was better to aim up or to bounce side to side (because it seems like you avoid the rocks that way).
The upgrade system is rather satisfying as well. A few sound effects would have really topped it off, though!
Well done.
one small suggestion i would have though would be drawing the grass you have as a background also on top of the edges in order to cover up the brown trail you leave behind :)
I was a bit surprised when I reached the end of the track, didn't expect to be an ending for this game!
I hope that you keep working on this game. This are some things I think would make the game nicer:
- Definitely include some sound effects :-)
- Maybe add some way for the player to interact during the race?
- I had some difficulty understanding what the different upgrades did. Maybe a short text explaining them?
Anyway, thanks, it was really fun playing it!
Now that grading is finished I uploaded a new version of the game with sounds and music. It is available on itch.io.
