Veggie Tamer by clyde

Veggie Tamer is a monster taming game where instead of capturing the monsters you have to defeat them to gather seeds and then grow them on arable land.

Screenshot 2023-01-08 145902.png

  • Z = Watering Can to water planted seeds
  • X = Plant a random seed from your inventory
  • C = Reap a plant and add it to your party
  • Enter = Pause and view seed inventory

NOTE: You might have to click on the game view for it to start? Seems to be a new thing at least in Chrome

How to add veggie monsters to your party:

  • Defeat a veggie monster to get seeds
  • Press X in the wavy ground tiles (fertile land) area to plant seeds
  • Press Z to use your watering can on the seeds and spawn a "tame" veggie
  • Step a little close and press C to harvest the plant
  • When you next enter a battle you can check the "Party" menu to switch to that veggie

Caveats: - Seeds tossed on non arable tiles will be lost :( - If your party is full, reaping a plant will still make it disappear but won't add it to your party - Your current seeds can be viewed on the pause menu, seeds will be planted in the order you see on the inventory screen

There is no story so you can just have fun wandering, battling, and collecting these rambunctious plants. There are 11 different kinds to encounter!

Veggie Tamer was developed for the GameTank open source console, but you can play it on the web emulator.

Existing GameTank game Accursed Fiend was used as a base engine with all assets stripped out.

TOOLS USED: - cc65 compiler - NodeJS for build scripts - Aseprite for graphics - FLStudio as overkill midi editor - GameTank Emulator to let you play it on web and PC

LAST MINUTE BUGFIXES: - The planted seed cache for the current map wasn't clearing between rooms which would have eventually blocked the growth of veggies. - Random seed selection was crashing when planting seeds so now it plants seeds from your pocket in lowest type number first - Party selection wasn't appearing as intended after player veggie KO - Undersized mob pool meant that if you planted more than one veggie the first ones might disappear so that was increased - Party veggie was getting resurrected after KO accidentally

Cool retro game! Reminds me of GB pokemon. Love the music and graphics and how my corn stuck in the trees.

That's a lot of content for a 48h game! nice art and music, huge map and a great variety of monsters. I would suggest a teleport home function. I went too far and cannot find way home...

Teleporting home or some kind of map could be helpful in a postjam followup. The skills system went basically unimplemented other than the battle menu item, but teleporting home could be one veggie ability.

Another ability I'd want to add is for Carrot to turn into Cacarrot for a stat boost but for now they're just separate monsters.

Great game! This game gives some nostalgic vibes. There's a definite Pokemon feel to it. The battle music kind of reminded me of Tim Follin's Ghost and Goblin's intro. A lot of good things here. I tried to advance as far as I could but I guess the last road up just goes on forever?

Nice job with this game!

Nice graphics and all that different monster types. Felt like there should be more in the game with all that skill and party buttons, but maybe I'm missing something, or it's just WIP.

@Corporation Thanks for playing! The "Party" menu you can add to by reaping seeds you planted and watered on the seedable spaces. X to plant seeds, Z to water them, and C to harvest. You gotta step a little close for harvesting to work. Also only the ground tiles with two wavy lines can take seeds.

The "Skill" button was an idea added because I thought it'd be funny for the Corn to have a move called Stalk and for Grapes to have a Wrath move but it got cut for time. :P

Wow... I haven't seen someone work on a hobbyist PC since I was a kid. Awesome to see you building games for the system during LD, and congrats on finishing this entry!

Overall had a pretty fun experience, the gameplay definitely gave old school Pokémon vibes. The graphics and music were nice and cute. Would love to see a minimap and the skill system implemented :)

I love a good nostalgic game, and this is definitely one. I don't have a strong affection for pokemon games, but I used to play the first ones back then, so this kind of brought me back there. Only thing I didn't really like were the controls, but that's mostly because I use QWERTZ layout and the Z key was very far from the others :) Overall very well done!

PokéVeggies is an idea I can get behind. While it feels a bit undercooked, it's noteworthy the amount of game you managed to develop in just 48hrs (even more so that you did it in a retro console of your own). I notice the music kinda glitches when you change tabs (I assume it's a runtime issue more than a game specific thing).

An interesting take on the theme, I found the controls a bit confusing, as well as the fact that you can only do certain actions once. Other than that I had a great time, all the different vegetable types are great, even though the cacarrott is still my favourite. Well done!

@fabian-denter Thanks! It might be time for me to finally add a keybind UI to the emulator

@orion-black SOUNDS like the emulator isn't getting frames when untabbed, maybe an alternate timing method is needed. Thanks for the feedback!

@andidebob The seed throwing action requires having seeds in your inventory, but it could be represented a lot better in the UI. That'll go in the post-jam improved version. Thanks!

The page and layout got me for a sec at the start, but I love the dedication to your theming.

Worked pretty well. Only technical issue I came across was the sound seizing if I clicked off the tab. Controls were simple, and I'm fairly sure I caught them all.

My one preferential issue was that the pitch of the second, overlaying, sound track was driving me a bit nutty by the end.

Very cozy game that brought back some good gameboy memories. Loved the designs of all the crops.I think a bit more progression and more areas to explore would be nice but I can understand the limitations given the time constraint.
