Top of the Crops? A Crop Circle Post-Mortem

Control Centre

Perhaps the biggest issue I encountered in designing/developing this game were the controls, and deciding what the player should and shouldn't be able to do. Players seem to be a little overwhelmed by the control scheme at first (and tend not to use the slow-down option at all, which I can understand), so I would refactor this if given an opportunity. Perhaps a one-button control scheme would be better, especially if I wanted to port the game to Android devices. I also toyed with the idea of allowing players to change direction when they like, and I think it's an avenue worth exploring. Maybe two player characters could be a solution: one who can expand their radius, and another who can reverse their direction.

I should note that I failed to map the speed up and slow down commands to the arrow keys, meaning that you can only really control your speed with a mouse plugged in. This was a bit of an oversight, especially as someone who mainly uses a trackpad!

A Rocky Start

To better ease players into the gameplay, I'd like to introduce elements a little more slowly - and maybe even slow down the game speed as a whole. There is a small period at the start of the game in which powerups cannot spawn, but clearly this wasn't enough. It'd have to be a careful balance, though, as a lengthy 'introduction' period would quash any potential for replayability. I think it's important to maintain that arcade-y, straight-into-the-action quality and not risk hindering the pace of the game just to make room for new players.

Vegetable Variation

A possible solution to the immediate difficulty is the reintroduction of a scrapped concept: separate fields with A) different vegetables to harvest and B) different gameplay timings and tweaks. The corn field could be a very basic, 'starter' field; a pumpkin field could introduce new powerups/hay bales to bounce from; a tomato field could focus on high levels of pesticide, etc. As well as offering separate difficulty settings via each field, the gameplay changes could be enough to increase replayability - especially with separate high scores, of course. They'd also allow scrapped items to make meaningful appearances (e.g. scarecrows would have acted like hay bales, but without the bonus crop collection).

Colour Calamity

Many players have described the game as 'chaotic', with 'a lot going on' - or, perhaps, just too much to keep track of. If adjusting the rate of powerup appearances didn't do enough to fix this issue, I think a simple remedy would be to reduce the size of the field from 9x9 tiles to 7x7 tiles (essentially zooming in the camera and giving each tile more space to breathe). Some people have mentioned a lack of contrast between gameplay elements (such as the player character) and the playfield, which I agree with. I'd hoped that I'd done enough to make each tile distinct and not too confusing for the eyes, but I'll chalk this criticism up to my lack of experience with the chosen palette. It'd be interesting to try experimenting with outline styles for certain objects - I had worried that white would be too distracting, but it may be worth revisiting. Maybe just cutting the number of browns for the soil from 3 to 2 would help to force it into the background.

Hitbox Havoc

An easy improvement to make would be to introduce actual hitboxes to each item. Aside from the hitbox used for the player character (or, more accurately, the player character's tractor beam), each other object tests collisions against its sprite. This was helpful in saving time for the jam entry, but it ended up making collisions feel oh-so-slightly wonky. Many have said that the pesticide hitbox is too big (which it is, factually!), and I personally think that the hitboxes for hay bales are much too small. In an improved version/remake of this game, it would be nice to solve these issues alongside a proper implementation of layering: currently, some objects may appear to be in front of or behind other objects when they shouldn't (again, I didn't have enough time to fix it).

Lastly, I just want to give a big thank you to everyone who has taken the time to play Crop Circle. I'm overwhelmed by the response!

The one button controls make gameplay engaging! I had fun first learning the ropes and then trying to best my high score. In four tries the highest I got was 1421. The cute alien sets the visual theme well and overall the graphics are top notch. Soundtrack evokes the hurriedness of harvesting the crops. Getting different points for ripe and okay crops (with ripe granting double the points) makes the game just deep enough for repeated play - it's great! Different items introduce some strategy - "should I first get the star, then the direction turner, but ahh there's the rat in the bottle I must avoid!". Randomness of these events makes every try unique but sometimes makes other runs feel unfair (lot's of rats but little extra time and vice versa). Loved this game!

This is incredibly polished for a game jam, at least in my experience! Very cool concept, though it did feel like there wasn't much to it after a while, the timers popped up quickly enough and weren't hard to grab. I liked it overall though!

I am always amazed when I see a complete game in the compo. I mean: title screen, game, end-of-game flow. This was right on target on the theme, the controls are innovative, and corn collecting all has some satisfying juice to it. Graphics are impressive, sound does the job. Really impressive, I liked it.

666 points, that's a sign, but I don't know what it means haha!

Gameplay is really more fun than I had expected. Don't know why but it reminds me of classic NES games. Not because of the graphics or sounds, but the gameplay, is just so simple yet so much fun!

Obviously, the graphics are astonishing, one of the best I've seen so far. Sound effects are on point and the audio-visual response to the player is absolutely perfect.

One of my favorites so far!

Very strong and polished entry!!! Very fun usage of the theme, the gameplay feels nice, juicy and natural, the mechanics are fun and somewhat intuitive. The only MINOR MINOR MINOR gripe I've felt is that the colider with the poison bottle seems to be a little bit too big, so there are times where I definetly couldn't dodge it at all. But that's NOTHING. Amazing job!!!!

Solid game with good mechanics, art and music. I found slowing down a bit useless as there were anyways so many power ups to pick up that focusing on getting those fast was more of a priority. Game play feels very juicy and I could play many rounds to try and improve the score. Great job!

Took me a bit to get the gist of the game. Game is great, but due to the contrast being relatively the same across all objects it was a bit hard to keep track of things at times. Still, a very pretty art style and a very pretty and polished game for just a weekend.

This is a very small game with simple, but a little bit complicated gameplay.

- Graphics are pretty good, I feel some Retro Vibes in combo with sounds / music. Pixels may be way too big though. Playing Full Screen is not recommended.
- Controls – It wasn't easy at first 30 seconds, but then I got how to control it. Not the easiest controls you'll see in games, but pretty straightforward when you understand how it works.
- Gameplay is not standard, so it's kind of fresh, although I can't say that I like it very much. Still nice for 1 run :)
- Game feels complete, although very small and with no goal (I didn't want to play the second time, since I didn't have any motivation)

The gameplay felt a little bit frantic and random, but the visuals were engaging and the sound and music were both great so I still enjoyed it. You already seem to have a pretty good grasp of what went well and what needs work, but Aside from the points you've already outlined yourself, my main sticking point was that the combination of random factors and a very simple control system made it feel more luck than skill-based, so I didn't really feel compelled to keep trying to beat my best score. But, to be fair, this is mostly a knee-jerk impression, rather than a carefully-analysed conclusion.

The rich graphics are just slightly too hard to read and might benefit from some desaturated backgrounds, but everything had such polish that I completely forgive it! All the UI elements felt so right and I never had the feeling something had just been left out somewhere. Cute, complete, and worth multiple plays to see if you can find a better flow. Very little gameplay options are my only complaint, and perhaps a larger play area would have made the player's movements more impactful. The harvester plowing through and the bumper crop upgrade were both impactful and fun. Love the title screen by the way!

In a way you can pick up this game without really knowing what to do and there's not much of a negative consequence for not understanding what's going on. After two rounds I still kind of feel uncertain about whether some of the items and events are a good or bad thing. But I had fun nonetheless!

Very fun game! Personally I liked the speed and chaos, although I did find it difficult to dodge the pesticides - perhaps some indication of where things will spawn or have them in a "ghost" state for a second to give players more time to respond? I ended up playing it through multiple times though, so it definitely has an addictive quality  great work!

Wow amazing game. Reading through some of the suggestions and comments i actually think it would be better to make the field much much larger. Almost 2x or 3x the size to give the player room to utilize the core mechanic of the spacebar and mouse button. The smaller field limited me to how much i played with that and mainly just went fast with spacebar held down and then alternated lifting the spacebar and the mouse button to get tighter circles. It become pretty route after a bit and i felt i needed a much much bigger play area so as I spun around i should miss stuff and then work at getting just the right combination of spacebar and mouse button to get the distance and speed i need to pickup the crops i previously missed.

A bigger play area would also allow you to slow down the crop growth (reducing the frantic ness) and then maybe throw in some - if there is less than 20% crop on the field speed up the growth rate - so as to keep the player engaged.

Overall - this is likely one of the best Jam games i've played so far though but these few improvements would definitely make it next level and help balance out the game.

I got a score of 1050! Really polished and tight game! Loved the pixel art and arcade-y sounds and music that fit really well. It was really hard to avoid hitting the pesticides so I tried to use them when I'd collected most of the crop. The frantic nature of the game helped add to the fun! I wasn't sure if I was support to avoid the harvest truck though, I guess it just cleared parts of the screen? Great work though!

Incredibly clean work for a solo effort, very impressive! It can be a bit tough to distinguish the powerups from the ones with negative effects but overall great!

Great game! Not much to add to that. Maybe Hay Bale could be used to hit harvester to stop it from collecting corn? Anyway, well done with the game!

This game was pretty cool. I love the simple execution. It makes it super easy to get into and play.

It was interesting. It was not as easily understood when I initially played it once. Usually I play the game without reading instructions or finding out control fig. But this one I had to so that I can give it a fair grade. Once I understood the controls I had enjoyed it better. Good play through.
