Meat Harvester by Alex Rehberg

[raw]
made by Alex Rehberg for Ludum Dare 52 (JAM)

You're a tasty plant. But the creatures that find you tasty are quite tasty themselves! Harvest their meat and grow!

This was my first Ludum Dare and I had a lot of fun with it. I wish I'd had a little more time to dedicate to it over the weekend but I at least got a little gameplay loop going and finished something :)

Very original idea. The graphics are simple but it does the job well. The audio fits perfectly. Good job.

I like the concept, however I found myself often confused. There isn't any cue to see whether I have stems or chompers selected.

The audio matches the mood perfectly though and loved it.

Very interesting game- I have never seen something like this before. The only thing that annoyed me a bit was how slow each root spawned, maybe add an upgrade that makes them faster or something similar. I had quite a bit of fun with it, thanks for sharing :)

Very interesting concept! Would be nice to have some sort of timer to know how far you got. I got maybe 7 minutes in.

If you're developing this further, a common mechanic for these sorts of games is multiplicative/exponential scaling to give the player a "win more" feel. This one kind of gets to that (you can be greedy by making branches or safe by making chompers) but it's never enough to make you feel totally indestructible. For a jam game though this is very well-scoped and an interesting experiment that I hadn't seen before. Nice work!

I liked it all along, the difficulty is well thinked. You can't be indestructible and have to make choice. A timer to know how much time you survive would be great.
A really nice job for a jam !

I really liked the game, what helped me last longer was instead of slowing clicking and growing 2 more segments if I triple clicked 3 segments would come out of the same spot instead of 2, probably not intentional. I do feel like a extra segment or a bit more health on the chompers making the game last a little longer would be a quick fix and more fun, but maybe shorter progression could be the way to go, very cool game :)

Love the idea, fit the theme and extensible. Just need more hints about selection and root.

I think that the game was pretty fun. It was a little difficult to figure out how and where I could grow stems and choppers. One big thing was that I couldn't tell what my plant's nutrition was. It was also somewhat annoying that I couldn't ungrow chompers to grow stems. Also, the instructions were too small. The plant and meat could probably be bigger too. The plant could also have some texture to differentiate the stems and chompers.

The audio matched the vibe of the game well. The plant growing animations were well done. Also, the meat carcasses were a nice touch. I lost when a whole branch of my plant broke off and died which I thought was a good gamplay mechanic.

Nice little jam entry that I found myself playing for quite a bit longer than I expected. I love the fresh take on the topic and i really think this is one of the more creative ones out there! The only suggestion I would make would be to maybe implement a system by which the chompers grow slightly faster. Regardless, well done on a really cool jam contribution!

Simple but very interesting and weirdly addicting. With a few tweaks I could see myself playing this for hours.
