Don't let them bug you by Brandsma

[raw]
made by Brandsma for Ludum Dare 52 (JAM)

In this game you'll take on the role of a farmer warding off an infestation of pests from your lands such that they do not get into your house or worse: last year's harvest!

In this tower defense game you'll use your green thumb to defend yourself against waves of bugs by tactically sowing various crops/plants that will in turn help ward off those pesky little creatures.

Warding off pests from your farm however is a costly endeavor and definitely does not generate any income, so contrary to the formula in this game you'll have to reap what you sow. By giving your plants enough time to grow they will level up and become stronger. They will fire faster, do more damage, and often gain an awesome new look in the process. They also increase their yield such that, should you choose to harvest them, you will gain more seeds in return allowing you to plant even more defenders of your home! Just click on any of your plants to inspect them.

Controls and Gameplay in a nutshell

  • Bugs are coming to attack your house, place plants to protect your home
  • Plants slowly grow and become stronger over time
  • When the plants have grown they can be harvested in order to plant more plants of that type
  • Balance the strength of letting individual plants grow stronger versus planting more plants If you encounter any bugs feel free to let us know!

Thanks for playing!

About us

We are a team of three friends from the Netherlands who love making games and programming. We wanted to make as much of the game on our own as we could. We made most of the sounds, materials, meshes and other game assets. We hope you all enjoy our little game, and maybe, just maybe, if you enjoy our game leave a like/comment. We also love to hear feedback! :)

Installation and Tips

When running on macOS or Linux you may run into some trouble getting started. At least for the linux build you'll have to add executable rights to the main executable. To do this on linux run the following command: chmod +x ./<GAMENAME>.x86_64 To do this on MacOS run the following command: chmod +x ./<GAMENAME> MacOS.app/Contents/MacOS/<GAMENAME> and then open the game with ctrl+click > open

What an awesome play on the idea of tower defence, having the towers grow and be havestable. Very neat idea.

Really loved the game, love the idea of tower defense like this with plants that shoot

Suggestions I'd have for this game are
- Volume slider / on or off button for the music
- The ability to adjust the camera more to scroll into parts of the map not at the bottom

Other than that yall did a great job!

Really fun Bloons TD6 type game. I don't know what to say. Good idea well executed. Ship it on mobile and I'm pretty sure people will play!

pretty well executed game! enjoyed the graphics and the music. the bugs on the third level rarely followed the path. not sure if that was the intention, but it threw me off a little after the first two rounds. overall a cool entry!

Man, I love your game! I'm not even going to uninstall to play every time I have a little time. Very fun, easy to understand, I really liked the style, it is super within the theme! Congratulations, if you do others or update this, tell me that I'll love to keep playing. Oh, take the opportunity to play our game too and tell me what you thought: https://ldj.am/$318266

@takhomasac That is indeed intended. They have some choices on which path to take, because after all we thought: Bugs don't follow roads in real life either ;)

Throwing you off a little was the whole point.
Thanks for playing!

This was a fun little game!
I liked the mechanics of growing new towers and having to choose between the tradeoffs of a higher tier tower or more. I was impressed with the art quality and variety of levels.

Some things I would have like to see:
- Tier numbers over the plants so I could tell when they are ready to harvest
- More sound effects
- The ability to pause the game to adjust towers, or speed up or slow down the wave
- It's unclear why the banna tower doesn't generate seeds, but it's unexpected
- Second level seemed easier than the first, so I would reorder them
- On the final level, some enemies would not follow the path which was unexpected.

Overall though there is really a lot of content here for a weekend game jam. Also was surprised and enjoyed the boss wave! Well done!

Nice idea with the ability to harvest your own towers.

There is some weird mouse acceleration which made it really hard for smooth controller.

A wonderfully innovative take on the tower defense genre! I love the idea of having to balance between leveling up individual plants and spawning new ones. An interesting quirk of the mechanic is that there's never any incentive to conserve resources - because a plant's level is determined by how long it's been on the map it's pretty much always a good idea to place plants immediately. I don't think this is necessarily bad, especially because it gets replaced by the equally (if not more) interesting decision of when to harvest plants, just something to keep in mind should you choose to continue with the idea.

I saw in another comment that the bugs going off-path in the third level was on purpose? If so, that's a wonderful mechanic that isn't communicated enough to the player. I thought that it was a bug (pun only a little bit intended) until I read your comment above stating that it was the intended behavior. I think just adding similar path assets to the other paths they can take would be plenty to tell the player that it's a feature and not a bug.

One last thing: the sensitivity on the mouse controls for moving the camera is pretty high. This wouldn't be a big deal since you can use WASD to move the camera as well, but because every other control is handled through the mouse I kept defaulting to using the mouse to control the camera. Even after discovering the WASD controls I used the mouse unconsciously because everything else in the game was handled through the mouse.

Overall, this is a genuinely fun and well-made game!

Didn't think I will play a tower defense game for the theme of harvest lol! The core mechanics of the game is innovative and fun. There is a tradeoff between keeping your best plants vs selling them to grow more. One feedback I have is to build the "how to play" tutorial in the game to allow the player learn as they play, instead of having a wall of text to show players when they first begin.

I love tower defense games so this was an instant play! The music choice was good as it didn't get too old during my play session. The first 2 levels seemed balanced well, but it seems like there was something going on in Level 3; none of the bugs followed the paths and I ended up losing around wave 8 or 9. That being said, it was fun and the ability to harvest mature plants to build more is a great twist.

Haha, I was already typing, that I enjoyed the game, but it felt a bit slow, as you couldn't do much. One more seed per wave was a bit too few to have fun over 10 waves. But then I saw a comment that you can harvest plants to plant more. So I had to fire up the game again and you know, it was much more involved than before. It also addd a star to the theme rating. Now I am really happy with the game.

Nice sound effects!
Interesting concept being able to harvest your towers to gain more over time, so you have to balance how long you should have a tower before harvesting it to create more towers!

Really nice tower defense game, I like it ()! I love the twist of letting your plants grow before harvesting them, because it makes it a ton more interesting than just a reskin of any other tower defense game on the internet. Great ideas live here, good job all three of you! I liked being given access to a new plant each time, rather than *only* a new level, it made things less boring across three, pretty similar stages; the audio and visuals of the game were nice, but I was convinced the pumpkins were bell peppers at one point (:stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:)! I give each of you a round of applause, keep it up!

Good idea, like the relaxing music. Rare to see new ideas in tower defense games, I will say what others have said that there needs to be a better way to show which plants are ready to harvest, also the strategy doesnt have a lot of depth you just spam the plants and hope for the best. Over all it's a good game though.

I did not expect to find a tower defense game here, that's nice to see! :D
It starts easy and becomes quite challenging as it progresses but I will keep trying to complete the big spider boss in wave 10 ^^

tons of cool assets in the game. You've spend serious amount of effort to get those assets work well together.

A solid tower defense game! I appreciate the variety in enemies, and the plant growth + duplication mechanic was a smart take on the theme.

I dig the low poly art, the default volume of the music was a little on the loud side. All in all, a solid entry!

It was great! A nicely well polished tower defense with a nice little twist! I didn't get it first tried to finish the first level without harvesting anything. After understanding what the real mechanic is it became addictive haha. Trying to balance between harvesting or letting them level up is pretty nice. Good graphics and very funny sfx :D Keep up the good work!

Really liked the balance of having to choose when to harvest things! The trick in the third level with no paths really threw me for a loop!

This was a really unique take on a tower defense! Most of the critiques I had were already covered, so I won't go into too much detail, but the biggest thing was not being able to pause the round to harvest towers. I'm not sure if it's a bug (lol) or not, but the pathing on the last level is messed up, and caused me to lose because the bugs completely avoided my towers. Other than that, great submission! The look and feel is really great! I also really appreciated the sound design - despite the melon almost constantly firing, it didn't get on my nerves at all :)

Great take on tower defense. Well balanced levels. Lots of varied enemies. UI is a bit basic, but it makes sense due to the time limits. Overall it's a really good entry, I had fun playing it, well done.

Reminds me of how much I like tower defenses despite how I can't remember when the last time I played one was.

The last level caught me super off guard with how the enemies don't follow the laid out path; but once I understood that, I was all for it. Honestly, it'd be nice to see more tower defense games take that route and expand on it.

I also appreciate the audio feedback for events such as your plants leveling up. Nice job all around!

I'm a sucker for tower defense. This game just needs a polish overhaul and it would be 100x better.
