Cultist Garden by GreenRadiation

[raw]
made by GreenRadiation for Ludum Dare 52 (JAM)

If you are going to play through the web version, turn on a full-screen

In this game you will take on the role of a cult worshipper of an ancient harvest deity. Collect and distribute food, make sacrifices, keep the deity's spirits up, and try to survive in this harsh world.

screen1.png

Pick plants in the right order to get food or the grace of the gods!

Screenshot_2.png

Gratitude will help you gather more plants, but don't lower it too low - the punishment of the gods can have a very unpleasant effect on your cult.

The game has 3 endings.

P.S. If you download the Windows version, it will be more stable

Wow! Amazing job. I'm a sucker for card games, so this was right up my alley. The gameplay is great: it takes a familiar matching concept but turns it into a really fun and well-developed system. The great variety in mechanics keeps it interesting and there's so many nice small touches like cards being partially obscured by the walls.

The art is fantastic as well. Thanks for uploading that concept art- it's really interesting to see that. I was surprised that this wasn't assets because the art looked so good. The art, lore, and audio combined make for just a great presentation overall.

The post does mention that the offline version is more stable, so maybe this only affects the online one, but the moon stopped changing for me. I didn't end up knowing how much time I had left. I wish I could have clicked the cards more often, too. I'm sure that's an intentional design choice to avoid people from click spamming. But, personally, I think I would have preferred being able to click more often but in exchange having less time before distributing food again.

I could totally seeing this expanded upon and being a game I would definitely get :)

Excellent entry! The art is delightful, the audio enhances the mood, and the variants of the memory game make something fairly straightforward into something really engaging.

It took me a couple plays to get how to play it for some reason. It's possible I got some boards that didn't have a full sequence in them or something else weird was happening, but regardless it came together eventually and was a lot of fun to play!

Really impressive work here, I think it could be iterated on and released commercially. Well done!

@fc85057 @landosystems thank you so much! I'm the artist who drew the game's graphics and it's a pleasure to read your comments. I'm glad you liked our game ^-^

Art is fantastic, cant believe how much you pulled together in the time.

Gameplay I like how you incorporated extra features into a simple memory puzzle and really made it a part of the story.

I think the card flips could be a bit faster though.

Interesting take on a memory game. Tho i wish i had somewhat of a say in what cards are on the field. Its nice and challenging, the mechanics were a bit weird at first, but easy enough once i understood the numbers and the interplay between the two screens. I feel like the transition from harvesting to culting comes too sudden, it already happens before i see the last card i opened, quite confusing. The graphics are really good i like the style. I only managed the "all my cultists died" ending, but all in all a well designed game. Good job

Excellent choices for music and fantastic art, you created a truly terrifying atmosphere! I got to the ending that turned me into a plant.

The animations and delays between flipping cards were very long and frustrated me when playing the game. Also at the start of a round there is the time for the cultist "show cards" power even when I didn't power them, and it had no feedback that it was in progress or that it was done. I think adding more responsiveness and reducing dead time would improve the game feel a lot.

I enjoyed the strategic element between rounds and had to make some tough decisions (sorry Joseph!). I managed to hold on with 2 dudes. I couldn't get my devotion any higher than 115 as it decayed as much as I added to it between rounds, and then I turned my other guy into a plant. Really nice job!

Liked the game. It seems to me that it was possible to make a better indication on the cards, for example, numbers with the colour of the card type in addition to pictures, because I was confused at the beginning of which stage which plant is. The cult mechanic was introduced quite suddenly and is fairly complex in nature. It might be worth starting with a small number of cultists and gaining more as you progress, and then, after the middle of the game, force the player to sacrifice them. Excellent mood though. Good job!

Thank you very much for the feedback! Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time to edit and polish the gameplay, so the delays between moves slowed down the game a bit. Also, due to time constraints, we had to abandon the already implemented features, as we did not have time to fix them - for example, cultists could get sick and their abilities were inactive until they were fully fed for a month to be cured.

I loved the mood and visuals of this game! Maybe some click feedback (sounds, hover effects) when choosing cards and clicking buttons would help. All in all, great job!

We love the graphics! It tooks a bit to realise what we actually have to do, but in case you already understand it - you will not have any problem. Great sound too! Thank you for your game!

I love the artwork. The game progression is done well in how it introduces new sets of cards.
The second and third cards from the original set were a bit too similar to easily tell them apart.
The game tends to feel unresponsive, I'm constantly clicking on cards or the reward popup, but due to some internal timer I cant click that yet which is quite frustrating.

Hi all, the server we were hosting the game on crashed - the web version is temporarily unavailable. We will try to fix the server, at the same time I will upload the game on itch io

UPD: I uploaded the game directly to the ludum - everything should work (better include a full screen)

Very cool concept! Love how many content you've made. Art is great. Every day brings new plants or mechanics. I wish card turns faster and have more UI ques when I did wrong or correct move. Also potatoes phase 2 and 3 almost identical, always confuse them.
Great job!

Really cool concept and quite compelling gameplay with some interesting choices to make. Better feedack and snappier card turning animations in the card turning phase would turn this into a real banger. Already great as is, though. Well done.

I loved the graphics, story, and concept. However, playability could be better. I often feel like the cards don't really react to my clicks and they seem to have long cooldowns that get tedious quickly. Nice music too by the way, really sets the mood.

While I am personally not that much of a fan of card games, this game was really well-made. The concept was cool i guessss, how it made all the crops and cult stuff connect together. Ooooh the feeling of having my own cult. have a nice day. great game overall.

This game is a fantastic card matching game that takes a familiar concept and turns it into a well-developed and engaging system. The art is delightful, the audio enhances the mood, and the variety of mechanics keeps the game interesting. The game's offline version is more stable and the art, lore, and audio combined make for a great presentation overall. However, some players have experienced issues with the moon not changing and the card flips being slow. Additionally, some players found the cult mechanic to be too sudden and complex. Overall, the game has great potential and could be iterated on and released commercially.

Amazing game! The art is superb and very cohesive, a tad too dark but it fits the atmosphere very well. This is a great concept, it's impressive that you did this in 72h!

Very good graphics, the best thing about this game. Took a while to figure out how to play, however, even with the instructions. I agree with @jamesboink. Even so, mood, images, and sound all seemed to fit together well.
