District 17 by Paulsams

[raw]
made by Paulsams for Ludum Dare 52 (JAM)

Description

This platformer is about a girl and a tomato bash, which she treasured very much in this leafless world.

Plot

357 years from the rebirth of the Earth. Cities rise like monoliths above scorched soil. The Earth government has banned the cultivation and consumption of biological plants, as they contain vitamins that have a narcotic effect on the people of the new generation. In District 17, a girl was growing a tomato plant at her home until a police drone discovered it. Now the girl is forced to flee from persecution outside the city and district 17.

You seem to have not finished, but still "published" the game? Too bad

@svenerik Thanks for the comment, but I did it on purpose, because I realized that due to the fact that we placed just a million light sources and shadows, we got 15 fps in WebGL, huh). And I didn't want to let people play this). It was necessary, of course, to make a downloadable build, but I only thought of that now). I was tired and was busy all Tuesday). But now you can try our project, if you want).

@paulsams Aighte! Works now, though weirdly not on here, itch one is fine!

One the game subject, very blade runner esque and cyberpunkish setting there, which I like a lot, but didn't imagine someone mixed in harvest into that, the visuals are really fancy and all of the animations & assets fit together well - making it a complete product.
While I also really like the music, the constant fast pacing of it gets old really fast, specially when I'm trying to jump somewhere and I hear a music that makes me want to katana someone instead. Besides that gameplay is solid and polished.

Good Job!

Good use of mood, although I confess I have no real idea what the story was about! I had fun exploring around a bit, then I got stuck in an elevator. Still, a good time. Good use of music too.

@adam-burt Thanks). And let me clarify: by getting "stuck", did you mean that you made a slide before getting into the elevator and he just stopped and didn't let you do anything else?

@paulsams I was in the elevator, and it went up, I got out and explored the floor but couldn't seem to do anything there yet (I needed a key I think?) so I went back in the lift and it didn't go anywhere. I could still move around but I think I was trapped? Sorry if I missed something I was supposed to do! I tried pressing all the buttons.

@adam-burt Aaa… You didn’t understand what to do in this case - well, this is our misstake, since you didn’t understand, that where it was necessary to move). To go further, it was necessary to notice the grate in the elevator, break it with a above attack , and then see the grate to the left of the elevator and slide into it.

I liked mood and graphics, but controls felt a bit off, like I had an issue jumping out of that tunnel below building. I think movement might need some improvemnt, to feel just a bit sharper and more intuitive to control. But mood and sounds are quite nice

Man I thought your game was very cool, congratulations! Incredible art as hell, sound too. Once again, congratulations. Ah, if you have a little time, join my game and see what you think of it. But the ideal is to download it, because the ludum window is giving an error in the screen proportion! It cost!!!

Man! That was an ambitious game jam! All that art and mobility and extra polish within the timeframe is crazy! Nicely done

It's really cool you went with something this ambitious even though it's a little unpolished. Great entry! Really cool artwork and concept.

Concept is interesting, but I barely feel any correlation with the theme and controls are very specific.

Really neat and awesome looking game! When i first saw the game i was like "this can't be done in a game jam"
, lol. It can be a bit more juicier maybe. But mostly movement and keybinds was frustrating for me, so i couldn't finish the game. But from what i've played it looks great! Good work!

I am impressed by the work done here.

I have tried two runs, one of them went smoothly, the second one had an issue with framerate.

But overall, you've done an excellent job with the art and the mood of the game. Well done!

Could not go underground and was unable to get to the police station for several reasons. Like the elevator not working and character could not jump high enough to the third floor. Duno if the station was there?

But otherwise it was quite visually striking and polished in that sense.
Great entry 👍

@n0va We thought that the player would notice that when the elevator falls, after you slip through the grate to the left of the elevator, then in the middle of the location it will be visible that steam has started to come out of the pipe and it will be possible to get into the main character's house through this pipe and climb to the highest floor).
Or did elevator not even go up to the second floor? Then you need to go a little deeper enter it.
